Hi! Which program did you end up choosing? I’m kind of in the same boat- I would love to do a BSN-DNP program (PMHNP), but they all cost over 80k which is just too much money for me to take out in loans. I know I can find a much cheaper MSN program...I’m wondering if it’ll make a big difference in my future. Feel free to PM me!

I'm looking into Vanderbilt's BSN to DNP PMHNP program, and I am confused as well as to the in-person requirements. In my case, I have 1+ years of experience and I live out of state so I would go the online route. However, I was looking at the block schedules and it seems that I'd have to fly in for a several days 4 times per year....so I'm confused. If you find more info please let me know, I'd really appreciate it!

Hi all! I'm looking to start a PMHNP DNP program soon. I live in California and I want to stay in-state. The in-person programs (which are already few to begin with because I will be doing a BSN to DNP Program) are all upwards of 130k, while the online programs are around 40k. My coworker told me that I won't get hired in California if I get my DNP online. Is that true? Clinicals would still be in person for an online program. I get that California is a very competitive state, but will I really *never* get hired as an NP? Of course, in-person programs are regarded more highly, but I figure after a while, employers will look at experience not just the type of school attended. So it might be tough finding my first job, but after that it won't be too bad...? I really don't want to take out a loan over 100k if I can get the same certification for much cheaper... Thoughts? Any advice is appreciated!

Hi all! I am a psychiatric RN looking to get my Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner license. (PMHNP). I would take the BSN to DNP route. My personal preference is to go to a hybrid program not one that is completely online, in California where I live. I'm wondering how much the prestige of the school matters for employment? I know for college it helps to go to a top school (in any field), but does the same apply for DNP programs? I know the top Psych DNP programs are out of state and are also *very* expensive. So...if I go to a "random" school to save money will it make me unemployable afterwards? Thanks in advance for any advice!

I say get your PhD first! You have always loved research, and the patient-care aspect of FNP doesn't seem to align with your personality traits. Additionally, a PhD seems that it would work well in the future if you decide to start a family ?

Hi all! I will be graduating with my BSN in April 2018 and I am really hoping to start my first RN job in psych. Although I live in California, I went to college and got my BSN in Pennsylvania. This past year of college has been miserable because all of my friends left, and I desperately, desperately want to move back home to CA after graduation. I miss the weather and my support system SO much. Here's my dilemma. On one hand, if I stay in PA I could work at a top psychiatric hospital which hires new grads (which is rare!?), plus, it would look really good on my resume. Just for 1 or 2 years and then I could go back to school/move back. On the other hand, I HATE it here, I've been depressed this entire year, and I wish I was back home every single day. Although jobs in the San Francisco Bay Area are tough to get for new grads, there are a good amount of psych hospitals and hospitals with psych units in SoCal. (One hospital in SoCal emailed me back immediately yesterday and said they are always looking for new grads- however, this particular small psychiatric hospital does not have very good ratings.) I'm so unhappy here and I want to go back to CA sooo bad that I'm willing to not take the job I was offered at the great psych hospital in PA and be unemployed for a while in CA since the job market's tough. I feel that I could find a job in SoCal in about 6 months post grad..? Should I take a leap of faith and go back home and apply everywhere even though every place requires at least 1 year of psych experience, or stick it out for 1 year and stay in PA? If I work at the bad hospital in SoCal that reached out to me, how much of a difference REALLY esp in the long run, will it make for my career? I know it seems like a no-brainer to stick it out, but I'm realllyy leaning towards going back home and trying there. I mean, I'll get hired eventually within like a year right? Thanks so much for advice!

However, every psych RN job posting I've seen requires at least 1 year of previous psych nursing experience, which I don't have. What should I do? Do I even stand a chance if I apply anyways? Hi! I have so much respect for pysch nurses, who often go under appreciated for all the amazing, life saving work they do. Im just wondering, for all the pysch nurses out there, how often do you: do wound care (and are they simple dressings or wound vacs and beyond?), care for patients who are incontinent (does your unit/facility admit incontinent pts?), walk patients to the bathroom, measure/examine pts urine, feces, and vomit, bathe or help to bathe patients, change pts clothes/briefs/diapers, suction pts, ect. How physically sick are your patients on average? Do many pts recieve IV medications and/or enemas? Thanks so much in advance!

Hey everyone! I'm graduating with my BSN in April 2018 and I am wondering if anyone has any advice on the timeline of applications. My ideal option is to do a nurse residency program, but with the stiff competition, I'm also going to apply to every single hospital that's a commuting distance from my house. I'm applying to residencies that start Fall 2018. I'm wondering when I should apply to the hospitals? I'm thinking it's not a good idea to wait to apply to hospitals until after hearing back from the residencies? *What if: I apply to a bunch of hospitals and they either call me in for an interview or offer me a position, but I'm waiting to hear from the residencies? *What if: I get into a residency program but I've already applied to a bunch of hospitals and they either call me in for an interview or offer me a position?
