  1. This has gone on for decades.....don't know why some people think everything is theirs or just don't care in some cases. Where I worked, there were nurses and aides that would take a persons food from the refrig (the name on it) and sit down to eat it with the "owner" in the same breakroom! Also, when we've had "food" parties, and an eve aide had her husband drive up to the break room backdoor and took most of what was on the table out for him to take home!!!! And, yes, drink a partial can of pop and leave the rest in the refrig even though another persons name was on it.....it goes on and on.
  2. I'm afraid you stepped into "it"! I've been an RN for 31 yrs and make no where's near that amt.....
  3. How many "old" nurses continue to work because they can't afford to retire? I can't see myself being able to afford to retire anytime soon and not every place offers different positions to move to from bedside nursing.
  4. What? nurses can retire????? I'm shooting for 67! That's 7 yrs to go!!!!!

  6. Introvert/extrovert, which ever you are......being nice to patients, families, co-workers does drain most people (probably not just nurses!) I am not an authority on mental status, but it may not ever improve for you. I've been an RN for 31 yrs and a CMA/CNA 5-6 yrs prior to that. As I'm aging, I'm "drained" more and more at the end of the shift, but I continue because nursing is part of me as a person. Good luck.

  9. I did the same thing when I was new out of school. I agree that you learn to set boundaries for your emotions and involvement. I realized quickly that being emotionally exhausted doesn't work when you have years of nursing to do. My patients get the best I can offer and their families are included with my caring....but I realized with time and experience (for me, 31+ yrs) that patients and families move on and you are no longer a part of their lives...so don't send your heart out the door with them.

  11. It's everywhere.....the pts. aren't the #1 priority (except to us as nurses). I changed from 33yrs in LTC to a rural hosp. Changing jobs helped my attitude (for now). Who knows where all this will end.
  12. I've been an RN since 1985 in KS. I'm certain you'd all laugh if you heard my wages after all these yrs. I took a small cut in wages when I changed from LTC nsg to the local, rural hosp. recently.
  13. I agree!!!!!! lol It's hard to believe that MANY male pts. request it be left there!!!!! YUCK!
  14. One of my recent ones.... being asked to assist with pre or post-op pts. or treandmills and having the floor nurses come tell me I have an outpatient to tend to! Really? Would you want me to leave a post-op pt. unsupervised?????
  15. Maybe once....but it becomes a "trend" with some employees. Someone always wants more than their share
