Research: International Nursing Experiences Research
Thank you for asking. I am looking at the long-term effects of international nursing experiences during baccalaureate education. The experiences could have been with your school or with an organization that you had nursing experiences. These international experiences provide a lot of insight when caring for clients from a different culture. If you meet the inclusion criteria, please click on the link in the original post to participate in the study. Thank you.

Staff Nurses Who Refuse To Precept Or Teach?
I am wondering if said nurse had a bad experience in the past with precepting and refuses to because of it. The thought of "nurses eat their young" is something I am reminded of here. This is such a sad thing in nursing. I have always wanted to work with new nurses and let them learn and I have learned from them. Teaching nurses is just not this person's best quality.

Intimidated, scared..
Take it one day, one minute at a time. Work toward knowing what you need for that moment but use it to increase your knowledge for future situations. Everyone has to take it slow from the beginning. Work to understand the concepts that you can use in many situations. If you can get a tutor from the university/college that might be of help. All the best.

When to go back to school?
This is a tough question. My thought would be to identify how much support you have with extended family or others. I would start as soon as you can related to time factor, as your children get older it will be harder with all the school and extra curricular activities that they will want to do. You might want to also look into a schools online, since you already have your Associate's degree. Last thought, I would see if there are other nurses who have children that are currently in the program and how it has been for them.

PCU vs. Medsurg
Most progressive care units are considered med/surg areas. I think it would depend on the hospital. However, overall it would be considered med/surg.

Thinking About Nursing as Second Career
Since you already have a baccalaureate degree, there are many schools who offer post baccalaureate programs and most are fast track either 12-24 months. I would suggest that you look into a program near you or possibly online that would work. You might need to take a science course or two. The programs can be very rigorous. Check them out and see what is available.

Please advise
I would suggest that you do the ADN or if you can get scholarships or loans for a BSN program. Either would be good. Talk to the financial aid of any school that you would be interested in going. Check out two or three and see what you can get. I highly recommend doing the RN route, either ADN and then BSN or directly BSN. All the best

Coworker wanted to trade shifts
Good for you. Some people clearly need to understand no means no. Money speaks. I worked for someone on Christmas morning when I was off, because she had very young children and I could spend time with my family in the afternoon. I was happy I could do it for a nurse that I enjoyed working with and who was a great team member.

bleeding after catheter insertion?
Movement could have caused pulling of the catheter. The biggest concern would be, to identify if there are other things happening to cause the bleeding. If the urine was more than tinged, he could be having other problems. When this happens, assess for signs and symptoms of hemorrhage or other complications. Assessing the vital signs would be able to help with identifying hemorrhage e.g. blood pressure decreasing and pulse increasing and continuous monitoring of amount of blood in the urine. It sound like you have done the procedure correctly.

1st RN Interview
I think the ability to shadow a nurse would help you to know if the position is something that you want to do. Relax as much as possible, even though it is hard. Show interest with appropriate questions. Also show knowledge of basic nursing skills and activities in the specific area you are interested in working. Be sure to address your goals for your career, if it corresponds with the position.

How has the nursing world changed over the years?
One thing that I remember, I might be a crusty old bat, when nurse/ patient ratios were much larger. I can remember having 12 to 15 patients plus other assessments to complete. I think the Nursing Profession has worked really hard to provide a realistic nurse/patient ratio, at least in the acute care settings. Way to go nursing. Waste is another situation all together. Everything now days is disposable including scissors; however, I hope it has decreased the amount of infection caused by healthcare. Some kits have so many different things that only half of the content or one item is used and the other items are wasted. One option is to save the unused items and donate to an organization that provides unused supplies to organizations who do not have basic healthcare supplies. Some hospitals have a store room that these items can be placed and the organizations come and pick up at different times. See if your hospital has this available.

Transitioning from Psych to ICU/Med Surg
I agree with others previously. My suggestion is to take online courses to go toward increasing your knowledge in med/surg content, even if your med/surg knowledge is good. It shows the employer that you are working at being proficient in the new position.

Do you consider it helpful or not to be given a Pt’s attitude during a report?
I like to know if there is something that I should be aware of that could affect my patient or that could affect those who care for the patient. I do try my best to be more cautious of that patient but to also look for what can be done to decrease the attitude or complication

I wonder if I'm too old...?
It is never too late to start something different in nursing or to go to school. we are always learning. My suggestion about teaching and your concern, look into teaching as an adjunct for one semester or one year to see if it is something for you. Most nursing schools are looking for adjunct faculty for clinical. You are definitely not too old.

Help! Was job offered at a great hospital as a CNA, so should I postpone nursing school?
My suggestion is that you start school as soon as possible. You stated you still need chemistry and microbiology, could you work as a CNA at the same time as getting the courses completed? I do believe the CNA position could be positive; however, not over starting school. In most positions, the facility is glad when you are going to school. Again, do not postpone starting school. Talk with the facility and discuss that you want to go to school, could you go on part-time or prn when school starts. Then look at the pros and cons. Then make your decision. All the best.

What is your opinion on calling in "sick"
I am sorry that you are having problems with work. The one thing about nursing, is that you can always identify a different job. I think it would be wise to try to get another job, even if it would be a little less pay. You need to be happy or at least like your job because there are always going to be difficult times. When you need to take off, it is necessary; however, be cautious of too often because it could be detrimental to your job. I hope you will be able to identify what is best for you.

My dad died yesterday
I am sorry for your loss and the difficulty that you are having right now. Sometimes it is good to work, but make sure that you take a little time at some point to grieve and continue to share the experiences with your children. You made his last days here on earth very meaningful and joyful by you and your children spending them with him. My prayers are with you.

Preparing a teaching demo for a job interview
My suggestion would be to prepare something that you know a lot of information about, e.g. the area that you are currently working. Prepare a handout to give to students and provide references of your presentation. If possible, I would ask the amount of time that you will have and what level the learners will be, to be able to provide content at their level. i would also look at the textbook that the students are using so that you are familiar with what they need to know. If it is just a small presentation and not for students, go with what you know. I hope that is helpful.

What do you think of 12 hour shifts
I use to work 12 hour nights. They were killers until I got use to them. It took 2-3 months to get used to them. Then they were okay.

Newly qualified nurse...nervous before each shift
Your anxiety is very common. I remember being extremely nervous and scared that i would cause harm to a patient rather than help them. I had nightmares that I forgot to give meds or gave meds to the wrong patient. It took me several months to not have the nightmares. I was always thankful when I woke up. Your anxiety will decrease over time. You will continuously be learning and addressing new things. One good thing in your specialty is that you do not work alone, you do have others with you. Take time to relax and identify a coping strategy that has worked for you in the past or learn a new one. marusia_tk has given you some great advise, I still use the TV as a way to relax when I am extremely exhausted or stressed out. You can do it, give yourself time to adjust.

EBP Topic Ideas
One way of describing EBP is bridging research and scientific findings into direct patient care. It sounds like your assignment is to investigate a specific part of diabetes mellitus such as medications, education, diet, foot care, etc. Take the information that you have found in research and identify how you can use it in caring for a client to provide the best care for the client. An excellent source is pubmed.gov put in "evidenced based practice AND diabetes mellitus AND nursing" you will get about 300 different articles related to nursing and diabetes to help with your project. I hope this is helpful.

Happy Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a time to identify what we are thankful for in our lives. I would like to start a topic for us to share what we are thankful for as nurses. I noticed that there was a topic on thankfulness about three years ago but wanted to start one for this Thanksgiving season. I am so thankful that I have had the opportunity in my life to be a nurse. I have had many opportunities throughout the world to work as a nurse. Nursing provides the opportunity to work anywhere, in any situation, and with many different people. What are you thankful for at this Thanksgiving?
