You worked as an EMT and enjoyed it. You'll probably be fine. I was similar. Worked as an EMT and went nursing route due to better pay / more career options. Nursing is not my passion. And those who preach that you need to have that passion blah blah blah. Don't listen to them. Not everyone is all lovey dovey nursing passion bs. I myself know this isn't my passion but I also know I can be a good healthcare provider. I care for my patients and provide the care they need. It's a good income and pays the bills and that income I can use to pursue hobbies / and other things I'm actually passionate about.

Well good too know. I figured that would be the case and that is kinda troubling hearing about the 'BSN' requirement for hires. that 2020 is around the time I should be an RN (If all things plan out correctly). And if thats the case then I will find myself without a job. Definitely discouraging to hear this but we shall see. Thanks for the replies though.

Currenty doing the two year ADN program at my campus. Buddy of mine who goes to a different campus working to become a doctor mentioned to me that the nursing board here in WA has recently made it a requirement to have a BSN only to be a Nurse. I haven't seen anything stating this from searching and told him to forward me this information. I'm sure I would of heard this from the Nursing advisor at my campus. I know I will regardless have to get my BSN and plan on continuing so after finishing up my ADN and becoming certified etc. I just wanted to see if anyone has heard of this or is it just rumors?

I don't see why they wouldnt be. I would be all over throwing the book at them for that. Let them rot in prison

As the post said above. Corpsmen are not nurses at all. Corpsmen, are at best CNA/EMT-B in terms of civilian 'practice/license'. As they advance in rank they have the option to move up the ladder of 'health care' for example a Chief who is my current provider is a NP. Majority of corpsmen in the navy that i knew all hated their jobs with a few exceptions. Obviously they're being called nurses because .. Well one they're in scrubs.. Two they're not in uniform and in a hospital setting. Anyone who doesn't know will assume "oh its a nurse because of the scrubs!"

Working on pre reqs right now, but my plan is to go as far as possible if things play out. I would love to become a NP and long term goal wise its on my list, But we shall see.

So I'm still a nobody prereq working on my 2 year RN degree, but as of right now (I know it can be unrealistic to look this far out in terms of goals) but getting my doctorate / Becoming a NP is on that list of what I want to achieve. Now for current NPs what was your path like? How did you achieve it, How long did it take? What tips, advice etc could you offer? Im trying to 'pre plan' my long term goals (Super long term) and just wanted some insight from a NP perspective. Current stats right now to give you a basic Idea. -26 years old / EMT -Full time. Getting pre nursing associate (To get full benefit of gibill/fed aid) Completion is Winter/spring 2018. -From there apply ot nursing school to get ADN degree complete. (Mite not get admitted until 2019 because of how close my prereq finish to acceptance to 2018 fall Nursing school and obviously other varying factors. My prenurse degree has some BSN classes in it as well. -Hoping to be a RN by 2020-2021 and working in the field as well as working to my BSN. From there is really how my schedule plays out (Because of hours / Kids / Life/) Unsure on how I would approach schooling (Thinking night classes or online). Then to Masters / Doctorates.

Salary also goes by where you live. isn't it like places in cali that a BSN can earn you like close to a 100k? I know over in my lands its 68k average salary for a 2 year out of school RN grad. I could understand though if you became say a NP to be making around 150k.

Fall quarter is over. A in psychology 100, B+ in Math 90B (prealg) and waiting on grade for my political science class. He has to grade my term paper + final test. So hopefully a high B to A for that class. Classes for Winter quarter Psy 200 (Online) Math94 Public speaking (Lawddd help me I am not looking forward to this) My in face courses are Tues-Thursday from 745-Noon. So gives me a lot of free time during the week to study / workout, hobbies, online class.

my god. Im struggling with like 20k in debt from credit cards lol. I thought i had it bad. Other than the nursing core have you look into the military as well? I'm doing college with my post 9/11 which pays fro everything and you get a monthly check for living expenses. Only served 4 years and don't regret it.

Depends on your mentality of to old. If you don't have issues standing on your feet and on the go go go 12+ hours than you should be good. ALso lifting patients and such. If you dont have issues with that then you're not to 'old'.

ADN (Or ASN?) Unsure hte difference. I think the call it ADN here. I'm currently going for ADN degree but I'm also getting two degrees in the process as well as near the end of my first degree I'll have a course or two that goes into the BSN degree. Getting a Associates in Pre nursing and than Associates in Nursing (ADN)

Depends on you as the individual. If you can afford to go to school fulltime without a job then I highly suggest that. If not get prereqs done with part time job and than when you get put into nursing school, If you can afford it do that fulltime. Im fortunate enough to beable to attend school fulltime without having to work. Have two kids and a wife (But using my GI Bill so I get payed as well).

That awesome! Two degree club coming in! haha. Another cool thing about my pre nursing degree will incorporate two classes (Near the end of my degree) that will apply to the BSN when I get to working on that.

Some updates so far during my fall quarter. So far around all A's (I think maybe one High B) Hoping to finish this quarter out with nothing but A's. Gotta get to work on this term paper thats due next month -_-. I have such a hard time writing papers. Also met with the nursing advisor and got my academic plan together. Since I'm using my post 9/11 education benefits that I earned from the military I will actually be getting a Associates degree in Pre nursing (which covers all prereqs for the ADN program). So I'll actually earn two degrees. One for my pre reqs and the other for nursing school itself.

Yeah im going to look into hospitals. I know next quarter Ill only be enrolled in one or two classes (Depending) for my pre reqs. So I'll have time to invest in work for 5-6 months before I take on another full load in the spring quarter.

So you're suggesting I should look into getting my PCA over working with my current EMT-B cert?

I'll have to look into it, But from what I was told ER techs are mostly paramedics in this state. I was a ER Tech as well back in the previous state which was really the main reason for me to pursue a nursing career over paramedic.

So I became a EMT-B back when I was in Virginia. Loved every bit of it and got only a very small amount of field experience before moving to my current state due to military orders of my spouse. So basically I'm enrolled fulltime at the college near me in the ADN program and the only ambulance service near me thats hiring part time (Pays as much as a mcdonalds employee which I dont really mind) only has 12 hour shifts minimum (Which is expected). The issue is I can't commit to a 12 hour shift currently due to school and childcare issues. (We run childcare for our kids through the military) and funding wise don't have enough to pay someone on the weekends to watch my kids. So basically I feel like I'm wasting my cert because I can't seem to work around my current situation. My biggest question is should I be worried? Should I just focus on my studies while working a random part time job that works with my schedule? I know having the medical experience is good to have and will help me further but should I really stress about it?

Update here: Psychology isn't to bad, The professor is very dry, Taken the habit of taking notes on my mac book as I can keep up with him talking (Hour class Mon-fri) so he goes kinda fast and doesnt wait. We also use a online course at home for homework/quizes. Which Is weird but guess it works. Math class is going well. Found out if I put in the time I can surpass 90B, 94 and 99 so If I can complete all these in this quarter I'll be abel to go ahead and hopefully start Chem next quarter. Political science Is going alright, Just lots of lecturing, Have to either do a term paper or two book reviews fro the end of quarter assignment ( I hate writing essays ) so im trying to figure out wha to write about still. We have test in this class as well but he hands out study guides so its not to bad I guess. Finding myself getting distracted a lot though instead of actually studying. -_-

In regards to the military comment. Military won't take you if you have large amount of debt. Several people I know in debt couldn't join until they payed it off.

Plenty of jobs for Nurses / new grads. Don't listen to naysayers. Job market for Nurses is still very good and in need. Even in the next 10 years according the Bureau of labor as well. Registered Nurses : Occupational Outlook Handbook: : U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Including if you're willing to relocate. Nurses will awlays be needed because not everyone stays in the position, retires, moves up to a new position etc. Don't listen to the naysayers who live in a small town or a place that is oversaturated with nurses.

Wow.. Thats some scary student debt. I'd say do some research on student loan forgiveness and as stated look for employers that can assist. Otherwise.. Save what you can, Coupons, Shop cheap, And grind buddy.

Hello, I'm nowhere near testing for TEAS, but out of impulse of deciding to pursue nursing, I went ahead and bought a TEAS study manual off amazon.
