It's tough out there. I know of several new grads that are having moderate difficulty. There are many classmates that I graduated with in Dec. 2008, who have passed their boards and are now simply waiting to hear. Some people are considering looking further out on Long Island (Good Sam and other points east). However, this will certainly not be the case forever. There is still a nursing shortage and it is expected to grow substantially in the near future. From what I've learned, while positions continue to go unfilled, the facilities are a little less "liberal" with hiring right now due to this rough economic patch we are going through. I was lucky enough to be employed at a hospital already and was transferred to an RN position. Even that was tough as the position pool was extremely scant for new grads - experienced nurses are securing the most desirable positions (for obvious reasons). So I accepted what they offered. No matter where you begin in nursing it is always a learning experience! In light of the current hiring situation, my advice to current nursing students would be to get your foot in the door somewhere, somehow. :) Hope this helps! Good luck!!! G

Hi - Sorry to butt-in but I saw this post and it really hit home. I'm from the NYC/Long Island, NY area and most of the 12/08 new grads are finding it hard to secure jobs as well. We had recruiters knocking our doors down before to have us sign on - when we weren't ready, of course - and now they are nowhere to be found. I've applied to 7 different hospitals since I passed the boards on 2/10 and so far the 3 responses I've received are: sorry, no new grad positions available, we'll put you in the applicant pool. I suppose everyone is feeling it. I was certain that I was in a profession that would be somewhat resistant to economic hardships. Good luck to you all!

I know a nurse - she per diems at my hospital - who worked full time at Mary Immaculate for 20+ years. She and other colleagues are back on the job market - some of them the first time since graduation! She can't believe that after this long she's "looking for work" ... She says all the new grads in the area have some fierce competition right now.

On a whim, I decided to look myself up on the NYS Office of Professions website a day early and to my surprise I am listed as a REGISTERED nurse with a LICENSE number as of TODAY.... This is the day before I am eligible for the 48 hr quick results!!!!!!!! So I suppose I'll save the $7.95.... And btw - I had absolutely NO idea how I did on the NCLEX. Some questions I knew - some I did not. When it cut off at 77 I was still relaxed and prepared to go all the way to 265 - in fact I felt in order to have a chance I'd NEED to go to 265. :smackingf To all of who are waiting to test or waiting for results... I took mine today as well...77 questions. Really good or really bad? I have no idea how I did. Some questions I knew, some I did not, others I tried my best to "critically think" about to answer...(if you don't know, you don't know). At least you were given ample amount of questions to prove yourself! I keep reading (on allnurses) that it is absolutely normal to walk out out of there feeling like you bombed. Good luck to you! Supposedly, the NCSBN has a hand in creating board questions. To me, joining their review seemed like the wise thing to do. I hear rumours that there have been repeat Qs from that review on the NCLEX.... Some of the scores are a little scary. The alternative format questions are nearly impossible in my opinion... Ex: Since when is a PPD placed on the UPPER ARM (above the elbow!)? I was always taught that it is placed on the inner forearm... The "hot spot" answer was looking for a PPD placement on the R upper arm... (pt had a L vascath - okay so go the the R arm, no?) Anyway just venting....

Is it just me ... or do the NCSBN questions make you feel like you never passed nursing school?!? I am also using Springfield review questions (with the big metal ring); easy questions - great confidence builder... Best of luck to you all!!! I take it 2-9-09

Lilyrose: First of all, CONGRATULATIONS!! Secondly, I have a few questions, if you don't mind: I see you are a new grad, have you taken the nclex or are you on a temp. permit? I am getting conflicting info. about their willingness to employ with a permit. Also, which specialities do they offer (currently)? I graduate in December - was told by recruitment to apply in October. Is it just me or is their job listing very limited?! Thank you for any help you can give me. And again Congrats!!!

Yep! That's her! She is great and so sweet! She really knows what shes doing! She mentioned that she misses L&D as well - I guess there was some sort of schedule conflict that prompted her to transfer. I'll get in touch with recruitment and see what she thinks about my plans to go into maternity post-graduation. That would be unbelievably AWESOME! How are the relations with staff members on your unit? Management?

Cinthern: Are the shifts strictly 8 hours? The SNCH website lists positions with 8 hr shifts, which quite frankly does not sound that appealing - for nights at least! I would be more than happy to work nights if I could be on the unit I love! (I've visited L&D several times as an occasional "escort" from the ER - your unit is gorgeous!) We have a new unit clerk that transferred from there as well...

What are the typical hours for the OR? I've heard that usually the schedule doesn't involve standard 12 hr shifts like other specialities.
