  1. I'm proud to be a nurse, just a nurse. My career goal at this point is retirement! I love caring for people hands on. I'd go nuts if it were any other way!

Not sure where to post this, but what is the best fit bit for a Lpn? I work LTC and push a med cart 8 hours a day. I'm not sure if a pedometer would be better?
  3. You are on a fast track to burn out. You have a great family? Then spend time with them. In my book family is, and has always been first. Good luck to you.
  4. 7 months in, and several jobs? Interesting.
  5. Nursing: when checking a residents blood pressure, blood sugar, giving a PRN- whatever the task I'm doing for the resident, and visitor wants a B/P check or blood sugar, or " can ya grab me some Tylenol?". I hate that! Non nursing: someone at a grocery store who takes the entire aisle, then gives me a dirty look for saying excuse me.
  6. Been nursing over 20 years. First thing I do when I get to work is actually count narcs, then I actually check placement of fentanyl patches. Only then do I accept keys. Guess I'm old fashioned.

First, you aren't choosing to be ONLY a LPN, you are cooking to be a licensed practical NURSE. Be proud of your goals. Not a lot of hospitals hire anymore, but clinics and nursing homes do. I have never been treated like a child by a RN that I have worked with. I am proud of being a LPN for over 20 years now. I love LTC, and the team I work with! Good luck to you!
  8. I don't think LTC, hospice and rehab are ' the bottom wrong of the nursing team" but whatever...
  9. I'm a LTC nurse of over 20 years, I am good at what I do. I have never felt like I was looked down on by any other nurse. There are nurses I have met that do jobs I wouldn't or couldn't do. We admire each other and we know that in nursing there is a fit for every nurse. No way in hell I would do labor/ delivery, no way I would or could do trauma, those nurses would in no way do what I do. We all have a fit in the big wide world of nursing, and that is why we appreciate each other!
  10. When somebody, family or not, says "just a Lpn" I say "Yes, and what kind of nurse are you?" Shuts them up every time!
  11. Keep doing what you're doing! Perhaps putting a recipe card in with the goodies would be nice. People can appreciate the treats and also know the ingredients! Merry Christmas!
  12. The best piece of advice I can give is that no matter how " super responsible" our kids can be, they can slide. Doesn't even have to do with drugs. I have learned that the hard way. You can be so proud one moment and so devastated the next. If it came down to it, I would raise my grandkids.
  13. Hi! I have been a nurse in LTC for 20 years. When state comes everything is done "by the book". Just like being a student in clinicalls. You will know when state has arrived because every other department is suddenly around and helping the nursing staff. We have medical record girls that suddenly appear to help the CNAs pass lunch trays. The activity department is suddenly appearing to pay attention to the lowest functioning residents. It can, sadly, be comical to see. I have always been honest when questioned by the surveyors. I believe they see thru the "extra" help that appears. Just do your job, be honest, and don't get so nervous. State comes in to make sure residents are properly cared for. As a LTC nurse, I also am there for the same reason.
  14. This week I have learned that my 8 days of vacation wasn't enough.. This week I have learned that I am practicing for retirement.
  15. I've been an LPN over 20 years, and have no desire to be a RN! I love what I do, and I'm very good at it!
