The orientation I think is 2 days 8-4:30 ish then I think a few days on the unit not sure hours, then EMR training that Friday (away from hospital but there’s a shuttle I think! ).

Hey there ! The areas I’d recommend living are Upper Fells Point (Walking distance but a bit hood that you have to walk through), and Mt. Vernon. Mt Vernon is a highly walkable area and there is a hospital shuttle ! The shuttle also goes to home wood (Charles Village, the undergrad campus). If transportation doesn’t mean much to you other places a lot of people live are Fed Hill, Inner Harbor, and Locust Point. If you’d like to live out of trhe city a lot of people commute from Owings Mills via the subway (takes you directly to hospital), and also Towson, and White Marsh !

Hey there ! I would suggest taking some classes to boost your GPA, undergraduate or graduate relating to PMH or some type of rigorous sciences since you're doing NP. I'd take them from a reputable school. Online even if through an extension school (Harvard extension, ucla extension, for example). Then when applying make sure you submit an academic addendum fully explaining your low GPA. Being honest won't hurt you, but make sure you stress how you arose from your circumstances and is imperative that you show trending up grades(your GPA boosting classes ? ). I think if you do this it would be cheaper and quicker than a masters in something you have no interest in ! Good luck to you and you will get into the right program at the right time. Don't give up !

Id look into Georgetown or Vanderbilt. My school's ACNP requires you to be on campus but I looked into the other two programs when I was thinking on ACNP. Hope that helps. Good luck in your studies !

Seems pretty odd. Is this for incapacitated patients or something? If its not to benefit the patient in anyway I wouldn't bother.

I think it depends on you two personally. Its never been an issue for me. I do work at a huge hospital which he is all over the place but mostly in the OR and I'm usually only on my unit. I can go like a month without seeing him at work or seeing him like 3 times a week at which time I would ask him to stop stalking me lol . That being said, he's my best friend <3, but I still wouldn't want to be in a confined unit/building working closely with him ! hahaha

I would definitely work in a onc ICU or at least MICU floor. All of the heme/onc NPs I had myself as a patient we’re all FNPs not ACNPs. They rotated between the clinic and the hospital. But this was in California, could be a regional thing. Hope that helps ?

Magnet hospitals love diversity ! Wear your hair how you want it and own it. If they don't offer you a position based on your hair they aren't worth it anyway ! That would be a major red flag. Good luck to you !

This is why I decided to pursue a career in nursing! Most nurse faculty that I mentioned this to are confused to say the least, or try to point me in another more familiar AP practice direction. Most APP I see in this role are in cardiac surgery interestingly enough! I'm paving my own way at them moment, not only for myself but for other nurses to follow later in hopes that its easier for them. Nice article !

Hi FNP2019, The program may not seem as rigorous to my friend because he did do the same program as me for RN. We went to a rigorous program top ranking program. A lot of the classes taken at Georgetown were similar to our classes he stated in materials and format. Our classes weren't easy. He might have meant it was easy for him vs most/other students for example you, since he's been through similar courses before ! I didn't mean to offend you or the program! After all, I applied also and was accepted and I'm still deciding whether to go there or not ! He definitely did the Nursing@Georgetown FNP program where he was assigned to a preceptor who had multiple students where he had to struggle to get hours because of other students using this person as a preceptor as well. He claimed the school didn't really do much to help him in that situation. He was also in a major city on the West Coast. It sounds like they accept too many students but don't have the proper resources for them vs them being malicious and just not helping/caring. He graduated in 2017 so maybe things are better now ! Also I know no one who did the GW program (George Washington?) so I can't attest to that. OP everyone's experience is different with the Georgetown program which is why I still applied despite my friend's warnings. But I haven't heard anyone respond from Simmons yet. í ½í¸° I think whatever decision you make will be the right one for you!

I am in the same boat as you ! I know an FNP who completed the GU program last year and he told me it was absolutely awful. His claims were there was no support and he would have to wait for preceptors or it would take extended time to finish clinic hours because he was literally fighting for hours with other FNP students they had placed with the same preceptor. However he stated the classes were easy and straight forward! Despite that I applied to GU anyway(lol) since they accept pretty much anyone! It was my backup ! I ended up also applying to Simmons because it seemed easy to get into as well and it was waaaaaay cheaper ! I think if I end of going with one of these programs I'd choose Simmons because its cheaper and my friend absolutely hated Georgetown ! Good luck !!

I'd look at the clinical hours and the senior practicum hours. Those are the best outcome determinants for an accelerated program in regards to being prepared to work my opinion. As for the NCLEX check your program's pass rates ! I am in an accelerated program and its wonderful. Definitely hell and a half with busy work but extremely doable. Best of luck to you !

I'd say it depends on what you want to do specifically as a APNP in the trauma setting. I personally want to focus on surgical aspect NP first assist. So I would work in OR because you have to have a certain amount of OR hours to become a first assist to actually participate in surgeries vs being a scrub nurse. In addition, working in pre hospital care areas like life flight or be a rn with first response units so you can know what is being done to your patients before they get to the trauma center and ICU experience for post trauma patient care. I know it seems weird but a NP who specializes and it on faculty @ my university gave me this advise. Once you start to look into the duties of a APNP in the Trauma surgery setting you can see where experience in these settings are essential.

I also complete my degree in 18' entry MSN-RN then off to DNP. I however didn't realize I wanted to work in medicine until I worked side by side a plastic/reconstructive surgeon for 5 years.

Thats perfect ! Since you're a local you are all set ! Also if you want you can choose a clinical site that is closer to you if they have the offering which makes it perfect for those closer to areas like Bel Air, Annapolis, ect. You will love the program !

Don't be anxious ! They really make the transition into the accelerated program bearable ! It is a lot of work but doable. It is not as impossible as it may seem. The only thing I wish I had known was that living in Baltimore city is rough. If you can, live in an area like Canton or Towson if you have a car. They are not super close to school but you will appreciate not being in the inner city as time goes on ! And getting away from the hospital/school/classmates is much needed sometimes to decompress!

I consider myself a scholarly nurse. Lol. I have always had a hobby of reading medical research even before I got into the healthcare realm. I am deeply fascinated by science especially immunology. I am definitely much more into those topics than classmates I have had in the past but the further I go in education I find more and more likeminded classmates. :)But if no likeminded folks or peeps who share similar interests are around I just kinda do my own thing anyway. I'm known to be unconventional so I'm use to being the lone wolf 🙃. More research scholarship money for me !!
