I'm no where a new nurse and I have concerns of my license. Too many nurses I have worked with have disciplines on their license due to not complying to the many threats of a ltc facility.

What part of Georgia is this GeorgiaPeach?? I live in Georgia also (Atlanta) and its hard for me to get used to the practices here in LTC coming from Alabama. I used to work one facility in which I had 54 on 11-7. I'm beginning to think I did better staying I. Alabama.

As far as staffing agencies I have worked for 2 here in Ga. I currently work with Lighthouse Nursing Agency which is in Perry, Ga. They pay $20 an hour and you are an independent contractor. You pay your own taxes annually. They staff all over Ga so there is always work. I currently work for them and when I applied I had to go to Perry to complete new hire paperwork. Another agency is ATC Healthcare and they staff in different areas. I used to work for them in Columbus and Newnan. I am not sure about other areas.

Its about the same in my opinion. I had an interview in that area several months ago and turned it down. I have gotten better luck closer to Atlanta. I still do some agency work and it pulls $20/hr and you pay your own taxes at end of year.

I just accepted a new position in which the facility uses AccuNurse. Anyone have any experience with this? I am so confused so far. Yesterday I had to do the vocabulary words so it could get used to my voice and the entire program took an hour and a half.

The pay is low compared to where I lived in Opelika, AL which is only a 35 min drive away. Cols Regional LTC facility paid $15 for PRN experienced. Muscogee Manor, Magnolia Manor also low. I know Sunbridge was $18 almost $19 but no benefits if you chose that option. ATC Healthcare which is a staffing agency out of Milledgeville, Ga staffs there and pay $18-$19, I frequently work those areas as I live in Lagrange.

Hmmm that sounds like my bookkeeper lmao! We are told as nurses that our med pass must not be interrupted, but obviously the person who made up that rule didn't work in a nursing home lol. I too assist with bedpans, transfers, turning and many other duties. Some people think that when they tell you something you should immediately go do it. They don't realize that if you are punching out meds its an act of congress to stop, either go assist that resident or find someone to help you if it requires 2 person assist. If you have meds in your hands then you either go give them or put them in the drawer return... Its great that your supervisor is supportive and has your back!!!

I understand your venting completely! Its hard to be in charge of a unit, you carry many hats and are expected to actually finish your own job in a timely manner. Seen and done it too many times!

I would also like to know what textbooks you use for Chronicity. I looked in the bookstore section but each book seems to be needed for each class. Is Chronicity similar to Fundamentals of Nursing?

About to take my first exam and I am working overtime paying for each one, seems easier. I don't wanna owe anyone when I am done with nursing school like I did when I finished LPN!

Congrats on your decision. I am slowly getting there, haven't taken my first exam yet due to constant schedule changes and working long hours. I have since got back into things and have decided to schedule my first exam. I really got inspired over the past month especially since I found out that my DON was an Excelsior grad! Smartest nurse I know and very professional in her position. So I am all smiles heading towards my RN degree.

I also suggest chegg.com you can rent the books needed at a small price. You can get it as long as 60 days, a semester or even set your days.

I work 3rd and I have 30 which is pretty good compared to other numbers I have had. I have 6 g-tubes and one trach but the work load is great. Now my past job I had 54 residents total with 29 fingersticks in early a.m, 8 g-tubes and 3 trachs which needed constant suction. I lasted on that job 2 months!!! I had no support, we had 3 nurses in building with 3 floors that had same number of residents. Luckily no emergencies happened. I also have encountered working a 75 resident unit during the day and splitting work with one other nurse due to shortage, lets just say that the med pass would be all day and the 9 a.m meds were overlapping into the 1p.m meds, very unsafe! Oh and we did 12 hour shifts there.

We have a new grad RN supervisor that will stop your med pass at least a 100 times to ask the dumbest questions. She came and asked me last week where does she insert a g-tube. Uh if you don't know I won't trust you to do it! The other day she inserted a foley catheter into a female resident orifice, I wouldn't have known about this if the CNA hadn't come and told me that the resident keeps urinating on her bed pad and the drainage bag is empty!!!! I have only 20 residents and when I am not working with this RN my med pass is 45 minutes to an hour, when she works its usually over 2 hours. I have to watch the CNAs and babysit her!!

This one is a killer for me! We have nurses that won't put paper in the fax machine until the end of the shift. When 7-3 leaves and 2nd comes in we suddenly get flooded with dozens of new orders, pharmacy clarifications, and lab results after adding paper to the fax machine!!! The whole 2nd shift is spent contacting doctors and pharmacy.

I would prefer to be woke up for 5 minutes of protecting my itching skin from the burning urine or bm on my skin, than to lay there for 8 hours and have brown rings on my pad so dark I could star in the upcoming Lord of the Rings movie.

I love it too! I went to a prison and worked there for 2 days, I never drove back! I had hopes of working in a hospital but fell in love with the elderly. Most people ask me as to how can I work with such a heavy work load. But you have to realze that in a hospital you have to have less patients because basically everyone is sick, in a nursing home out of the 25 you may have one who is sick and needs more attention.

I had 29 diabetics who each got fingersticks and my 3 cna's would get them for me in the mornings. I also had 8 tube feeders, 4 of them bolus. Oh and I had 2 trach residents who needed constant suctioning!! I worked there for 2 weeks and walked out because I was not Superwoman!

I completely understand your reasoning for getting out of LTC! I just accepted a position in a correctional facility. I have been in LTC since I came out of nursing school and recently saw my stress level rise significantly over the past few months. I desire a change of scenery and I am very glad I did this!!! I saw on the gbon site that if you have LPN clinical skills then that will go towards your preceptorship. Is that true for if you enrolled in 2009? I live in Bama but plan to move to Ga this year. Congrats to you Leo2, I know you are extremely excited!!!! My inspiration to continue this journey!
