  1. Hi, Brush up on your writing, time management skills, and work/life/school balance. This is what was recommended to me by several PMHNPs that have completed this program. I have been away from this fantastic allnurses forum for a long time.
  2. Hi, You should be prepared to answer some or all of the questions below. Pre-PMHNP and post-PMHNP program goals are always vital to gaining admission into any graduate level or nursing program. 1. What is your reason for wanting to become a PMHNP? 2. Why did you select the UTRGV PMHNP program? 3. What will you do for the PMHNP profession and your community post- UTRGV PMHNP program completion? I am sure that a critical thinkers like yourself will not have a problem gaining entry into the PMHNP certificate program. Wishing you the best?
  3. Hello All, I will begin the UTRGV - PMHNP program beginning summer 2020. Anyone else starting the program this summer? Regards, JimK

  7. Hi Jason, I previously posted the following in another forum some time ago. Yes, the school is CCNE accredited. I think that you are overlooking the fact that the school does not offer a "direct entry" program of study leading to the "initial" RN licensure. The program is geared towards the licensed RN, hence forth the RN to BSN, RN to MSN requirement. CCNE and the National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) accreditation serve as the "gold" standard for nursing program accreditation. I would not attend a school that does not have either. Please see bottom of page #2 "Recognized nursing accrediting Commissions: National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) and Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)." http://www.dora.state.co.us/nursing/education/RNprograms.pd DORA Link: http://www.dora.state.co.us/nursing/education/RNprograms.pdf or http://www.dora.state.co.us/nursing/education/RNassociateprograms.pdf or http://www.dora.state.co.us/nursing/education/LPNprograms.pdf All of the programs listed on the DORA site offer associates and/or bachelor's programs that lead to "initial" LPN/LVN or RN licensure. I did plenty of research prior to enrolling with ASU, as I checked the U.S Department of Education (DOE) website (http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) website (http://www.chea.org/search/default.asp), the CCNE website (http://www.aacn.nche.edu/CCNE/reports/rptAccreditedPrograms_New.asp?sort=state), and finally the Colorado Commission on Higher Education (http://highered.colorado.gov/Academics/Colleges/privateaccredited.asp) as ALL four (4) of them have American Sentinel University listed as accredited and/or approved. I was satisfied with the results I found!!! Regards, Jim K, RN, MBA, MSHS, MSN, LNC
  8. Hi LadieRN, I am Jim K and I graduated from American Sentinel University's Master of Science in Nursing education program on November 30, 2010, Summa Cum Laude. American Sentinel University (ASU) offers the RN to BSN, RN to MSN, and the BSN to MSN with 5 specialty concentrations (management and organizational leadership, education, case management, nursing informatics, and infection prevention and control). I truly enjoyed my studies and because ASU's nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the Distance Education and Training Council a U.S. Department of education approved accreditind agency. The CCNE accreditation provided a type of additional quality assurance for me and because of this assurance I had no trouble when I applied to a post-master's clinical nurse specialist and a Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) program from other CCNE accredited schools. The courses are designed to be completed in a eight (8) week format. The MSN student is required to submit a weekly assignment and to submit a response to a discussion board posting. The MSN program is challenging, yet rewarding. I received a great education that has equipped me with the needed skills and/or tools to go into the for-profit or non-profit nursing classroom and help the perspective nursing students meet his or her goals of becoming a future LPN/LVN or RN. I started my program in March 2009 and completed the program on November 30, 2010, while working full-time. And to prove that I am a real person, I have provided a link to the schools announcement section, as I was selected as student of the month for October 2010. I have recently received several offers to teach asynchronous and synchronous nursing courses and have accepted one of the offers. Jim K ASU student of the month link: http://www.americansentinel.edu/content/content.php?id=446 The admissions and financial aid process was easy and well laid out. No obstacles or high pressure tactics from staff. I have had ten (10) fantastic, yet fair instructors/professor and one bad professor that no longer teaches at the school. ASU values the input of its students and goes out of their way to find ways to improve student satisfaction, while increasing the quality of the education that each student receives. Please feel free to contact me by phone or private massage/email to address additional concerns on the ASU master's level nursing degree program. Regards, Jim K, RN, MBA, MSHS, MSN, LNC
  9. Congratulations guys!!! Upon completing your entry-level nursing programs, continue with your studies and move up the nursing ladder of success. Regards, jek2839, RN, MBA, MSHS, MSN, EdD(s) **********Former LPN************
  10. Hi Jun14, The African American male nurses or nursing students are simply expressing a sense of pride. I would hope that if your a RN, LPN or nursing student that you are proud of your accomplishments and would want to tell the virtual world. Regards, jek2839, RN, MBA, MSHS, MSN, EdD(s)
  11. KirbyEMT, I do not think that you get that these gentlemen are African American male nurses or nursing students and they are expressing a sense of "pride" versus an easy way into nursing school. African American and European American male nurses or nursing student's are a rare commodity in nursing. I wish you well in becoming an RN or LPN/LVN and we appreciate your community based service as an EMT. Regards, jek2839, RN, MBA, MSHS, MSN, EdD(s)
  12. Hi All, I am also a Black male nurse and recently moved from Michigan to the Dallas-TX metro area . I graduated in 1996, before that I was an LPN. I have a BSc, MBA, LNC, and I am currently working on a MPH and MSN-Education (next Doctoral degree). I am a member of Sigma Theta Tau and I love being a MALE nurse. I have worked in a variety of settings; health care management, long-term care, home care, med-surg, corrections nursing, and now psych nursing. Proud Male RN!
  13. Hi Lynnep (Esq - soon-to-be) Congratulations, 6 weeks and your done with law school. I received several private message (PM) responses from several RN/JDs and RN/Paralegals. I have since completed a paralegal program and truly appreciate the private advice that I received. I have already completed several graduate degree programs and just wanted some basic knowledge on "Law" and the Paralegal program satisfied that need. The nursing shortage is only in smaller cities, because in bigger cities, bonuses are being offered to RNs and LPNs. Do a Monster.com, Careerbuilders.com, or any U.S government website search and you will find out their is indeed a need for RNs and LPNs in all 50 states. Risk management and health care administration are great fields for RNs with experience or RNs with a JD or paralegal degree, but it is dependent upon location (i.e. Dallas-TX, LA, Chicago-IL, New York). You can never go wrong by completing a RN program and getting several years of nursing experience "under your belt", and because you possess a JD degree you would be able to do some part-time legal work, to keep your JD skills intact while working as an RN. Good luck on passing the Bar exam. What state are you located in? Regards, Jim, RN
  14. TexasNurseEducator, I plan to take the RN Refresher course and return to Psych (male RN) nursing, sometime within the next 12-18 months. I have been stuck performing health care administrative duties for the past 5 years. Does the RN Refresher course help those of us, that love Psych nursing? I have a LPN/RN background that consists of Med-surg, Psyche, Home health, and Geriatrics. I have been offered a position working part-time performing Psych (corrections-RN) nursing and will also join the U.S. Army (reserve) Nursing Corps. The Army needs Psych nurses real bad. I have completed a Paralegal (legal nurse) program, an MBA, currently working on an MSN (administration), and currently reside in the Dallas-TX metro area. Best regards, Jim Member, Sigma Theta Tau
  15. Same courses for me and I am also considering the NP route also. Right now their is a need for Psychiatric/Behavioral Health NP or CNS and that is what I really want to do. Have you checked into the University of South Alabamas (CNS & NP) 100% distance educations programs? http://www.usouthal.edu/nursing/ The school has a RN to MSN (for Nurses with Non-Nursing BS) route also and it's reasonably priced also. Take care,
  16. Sorry Sadie Lady for taking so long to get back with you. I decided to postpone my admission until Jan 2009 to start the CNS program.
  17. I was accepted into Liberty Universities Acute Care CNS program on June 24, 2008 and I'm very happy. I will be working towards Adult CNS-PMH and/or CNS Gero-Psyche specialty in the future. I plan to work for and retire from the Veterans Administration (VA).
  18. Congratulations Bryan,:bowingpur:yeah: I am in the process of starting the MSN program with the University of Phoenix and in 12-24 months, I too hope to be done with the MSN-FNP program. Please PM me with any suggestions for study. I will be completing the CAMPUS based program vs the ONLINE program and that is because of my MSN-FNP Family Nurse Practitioner goals. Regards, Jim:typing
  19. Congratulations on finally tackling the dreaded NCLEX beast. B Blessed, jek2839
  20.
