  1. Congratuations. Oh, and tell your classmate, that nurses in hospitals.... guess what? we wipe butts too!!!!
  2. Not sure where you live, but Gwynedd-Mercy College in Pennsylvania has a Saturday and Sunday program and you are able to work during the week full time.
  3. Was this not an emergency??: my dad brought my mom into an er complaining of shortness of breath, a cough with sputum, change in mental status and lacerations to her forehead as she had fallen the day before. The only thing the e-room staff did was a CT scan of my mother’s head. They drew no labs, did no chest x-ray. I question whether they even listened to her lungs or did a full set of vital signs. My father was told the head CT was negative for any bleed. My mother was discharged home by a physician's assistant with a recommendation for triple antibiotic for the lacs and to follow up with a family doctor. My father questioned about my mother’s shortness of breath and the need for a chest x-ray and was told my mother has COPD and this is something they do not address in an emergency room, and only 20% of her lungs are functioning and that she is going to die from this. My father took this as she would die very soon. He has been distraught over that statement since. How does the PA know only 20% of her lungs are functioning when they did NO diagnostics or other work ups on her at all? The next day we took my mom to another ER where she received all the work-ups. Her Pulse ox was in the 60's, her ABG showed arterial O2 in the 20's! and chest CT showed a PE!! the second ER admitted her into ICU. I am very stressed.
  4. "No lie...2 weeks ago I was in a pt's room charting when a family member (mid 20's or so) asks me "What are you?"...I say I'm a nurse. Then he's like, "You can't be a doctor because you're a woman, right?" He was SERIOUSLY asking me this. How stupid can people be? " -- Apparently VERY stupid.
  5. Look in the Case Management forum under the Specialty tab. This is for both CM in the hospital and CM at the managed care companies (which is what you are asking about). "Insurance nurses" work at Aetna, US Healthcare, Magellan, etc. Not sure about new nurses. I would go to one of the insurance company's websites and look at their job postings.
  6. Hi Serena. I also graduated in May and am just starting on the floor tomorrow (just finished orientation classes) and I am terrified. So you are not alone. The advice I have been given is to show confidence even if I do not feel it, and to ask questions even if I think I should already know it (rather ask than potentially harm someone), and to relax on my days off. I kind of feel like I do not know ANYTHING, so I am curious to see how tomorrow goes to see everything I actually do remember from school! Good Luck.
  7. I work in one state and reside in another. Does it matter under which state I sign up for liability insurance? Is the only difference the cost? Thanks.
  8. I would question why that hospital is offering the bonus? Why do they have difficulty finding nurses? Are there problems there? I would hate to leave a job that I like to go to one that I end up being overworked, overwhelmed, stressed at and hate to get up to in the morning. The hospital I work at is offering a large bonus for a particular unit, however that is because it is a brand new unit and needs to be staffed rather quickly. Again, I would want to know the reason for the sign on bonus.
  9. Hi. It is 48 business hours, but I think they must count Saturday because I was able to get my results on a Saturday after taking it on a Thursday morning. I would check tomorrow and Sunday just to check (I know I kept checking), but you might have to wait until Monday. Good luck.
  10. I took mine early August and also felt I had a LOT of SATA questions. I was certain I failed for that reason because in my practice tests, i did not do well with SATA questions. My test shut off at 75 questions and I did pass. I have a strong feeling you did fine.
  11. Hi Bryana, I definately agree that working as a PCT will be beneficial to you. I am a Social Worker in a hospital covering ICU and a Surgical Trauma unit as well as Trauma Alerts. I have no direct patient contact in this role as I perform social service duties. However I have learned a lot just by being on the units, reading charts, listening, talking to patients and staff and being able to ask questions. Nurses I work with have also taught me things since they know I was a student (I graduated in May and passed my boards earlier this month). So I say go for it.
  12. Thank you very much Momof2nurse and Nursediva08. That information is very helpful, I did obtain the Certification form but did not realize that was the 2nd page of the background check form. Congratulations on passing the NCLEX, NurseDiva08. i hope to take it in July sometime. Good luck to you Momof2nurse.
  13. Hello. Does anyone know if I can download a copy of the "Certification and Authorization Form for Criminal History Background Check" off the internet? The NJ Board of Nursing has it in the nursing license application on their site, however it appears that there is a page missing from the document as it says "continue on reverse side", however there is no next page.
  14. Hello. I will be graduating from an ADN program in May 2008. "Everyone" keeps telling me to start applying for a job now, or asks whether I have something "lined up yet?". I was intending to apply for jobs after I pass the boards next summer. Is there a reason new grads should apply this early? Do hospitals typically only have one or two "new grad orientations" per year? Why are people suggesting I apply now or soon? Thanks for the info.
  15. i apologize for being clueless about this, but what is pm?
