What illnesses are you seeing already?
Wondering what's your policy on HFMD and Scarlet fever. Anybody would like to share how many days the student stays home and any classroom quarantine procedure in your school? Thanks!

Head Lice!
Yeah, I tried and attached references(NASN, APA, CDC) to support my ground but got a(yes very reputable organization), don't know if I take it as an insult or just let it pass kinda comment. Our School director actually thought it was very interesting but the principal wrote he expected me to be much more "stricter" on the No lice/nits policy. He also mentioned "no parent would respect such decision". Well, I feel so crappy but I tried.

38C fever, no ride home?
Great! Usually kids with fever gets picked-up by parents but if it's too close to going home time, i'd rather send them home with the school bus than sit and wait for parents to arrive another hour. Thanks all! I really appreciate all the answers I get here :)

38C fever, no ride home?
Hello again nurses, Im just wondering if you would keep a child in your clinic and ask parents to pick up when there's no other symptom other than 38C fever and it's 30 minutes to home time. I did send the child with the school bus because there are no other symptoms, no N/V, no stomach ache etc. Parent was informed and student was given paracetamol.

Middle School/High School and Supplies
I have fridge in my office, so i make ice cubes, put it in the ziplock with water then wrap it with a paper towel. If it's a serious case, I keep the student in my room for observation, if not they go back to class with the ice-water bag. I use Ace wrap if it's really needed. Some student's would ask for it just to "look cool" :) and that will be a NO.

Newsletter topics
In my last school, the school office is in-charged of sending newsletter. But my current school let me handle almost everything when it comes to health/nursing. I send out health/medication policy at the beginning of the school year, reminders when to send a student to the nurse, fact sheet of communicable diseases, etc. Also have my bulletin board inside and outside my room. Right now I'm planning of putting something interesting that follows the health awareness calendar. There are other issues I dont like but still happy to be at my school right now :)

Object inside the ear
Exactly! In my email I told her I would have done the same thing. I wouldn't want to send a child to an emergency hospital unless a pencil or anything sharp is embedded in the ear and if in my judgment I couldn't remove the object(paper ball in this case). I did the same thing in another school last year and had no problem with it. As a school nurse, I would like to limit unnecessary trip to the doctor or to the emergency hospital. Nurses are in the school for a reason, if we call ambulance or send them to hospital every tiny little thing student gets, they wouldn't need a nurse. The secretary can do it.

Object inside the ear
So today I got a call from the early years principal regarding the building nurse removing an object from one of the student's ear. The nurse successfully removed it and no further harm was caused. My question is, are school nurses should be allowed or are you as a school nurse allowed to remove an object from a students ear if in your judgement, it is not necessary to take the child to an emergency hospital just to get it out? I would have acted the same. The principal's concern is that, if the child moves and accidentally pushes the object further in, more damage will be caused. Any thoughts?

Teachers and staff medical info and emergency contact number
Thanks all! I am working in an International School and most of our staff are from all over the world. I find it necessary to have their emergency contact list due to a lot of staff are here by themselves(singles), some with wife and small kids and no other relatives. What's in my files are outdated, last updated 2012(this is my first year in this school and don't know why the files were not updated last year). Many teachers have already left and new teachers don't have their emergency contacts with me. I will send out an emergency medical forms for them to fill-out next week :).

Teachers and staff medical info and emergency contact number
Im wondering if school nurses gathers teachers and staffs medical information and emergency contacts in their school. My responsibility as a school nurse where I work now is focused on the students but I'm wondering if others are also responsible with the staff's medical records. Anyone?

Medication administration
@SChoolNurseTXstyle, i love that! :). I hate it when parents think we know where their kid is all the time. Especially for a G10 student, I would really want him and the parent to understand that it's his responsibility to come to my office and take his medicine. I am not your private nurse!

Medication administration
Thanks everyone! I just needed to know I am not doing anything different than you do and not putting my job in line. I have one parent who is very close to the school director and though no complains about the missed medication yet, i just want to be prepared in case. Student is old enough and should be responsible enough to get to my office everyday but he doesn't. I call the room where he is almost everyday, even after asking his teachers in an email to send this student when he is in their class after school(teachers forget too). But during days that he is not in his classroom, i feel like it's my fault he is missing his medicine and worried that mom would complain.

Medication administration
Hi Nurses, I have again questions for you fellow school nurses. In the beginning of the school year, I sent out emails to parents regarding medication policy. One specific detail I wrote was that students will go to the nurse office/clinic and take the medication there. I have three students in middle school and high school that needs to take medicine after lunch daily. There are times that they remember coming to my office before going to their class after lunch but most of the time, i need to call them out of their classrooms. In short, I go after the students and there are times I would miss giving the medicine due to another student sick in my office or they are somewhere else. I would like to know how you guys do this. Do you have some kind of system that gets the child to your office? Or do you go out and find the students? Regular school schedule is fine but there's a lot of activities going on now that places the students somewhere else not in their classroom. I appreciate any help out there.

First aid kits
Thanks for the infos! I decided to buy 8 large first aid kits for 3-5 days trips/tour and 5small ones for day trips. We have 6-7 groups heading out for tours next month and each group bring 1 large kit. That should be plenty. Thanks nurses!

First aid kits
Hello School Nurses! Hope everyone's doing well in the first few weeks back to school. Im wondering if you have any ratio for student to first aid kit in your school. How do you determine how many first aid kits should be sent during field trips, day trips and overnight/few days trips? Appreciate any info.

Scarlet fever
Hi folks! This week I have two students diagnosed with scarlet fever. Everyday for 3days now I check the whole class' temperature and symptoms for scarlet fever. Then today another student was out, mom's observing for any s/s at home other than fever. My question is, if there are more than 2 or 3 students with scarlet fever in the same class, what would you do or what's your school policy? In our school, the policy is only to check and monitor students for signs and symptoms however, today I was approach by the school coordinator asking what I would recommend. Students age are 6-7 years old.

A (hopefully) zen thought on the Pearson Vue Trick
I took my exam May 7. Finally, after those agonizing days of waking up at 4am in the morning to have 2 hours of studying, some reading when not busy at work during the day and few hours more after work is over. Now I can make a normal dinner for my Dear family again. It will take me 4-6weeks of waiting for the result and there are times that I do really want to try the Pearson Vue trick but I argue with myself not to. Pearson Vue trick is unofficial and i read it here that it's not even a specific "you pass or you fail" pop-out. I agree with CUddles that the pearson vue trick is just another hill on the emotional roller coaster ride and nothing more. I also have plan A and plan B and I am assuming the worst(like what Hurst say :) ), it helps me deal with my anxiety. Congrats Cuddles! And good luck to those who are just taking the exam and those who are waiting.

pearsonvue trick...accurate?

Taking NCLEX in 3wks KAPLAN Score
Hello there, My big day will be on May 7. I have 3 weeks left and I feel not prepared at all. I used online Hurst review, Kaplan and Saunders NCLEX-RN book. I did Hurst online review exam and the following are my result for 4/6 set of exam: 1. 87/125 2. 76/125 3. 79/125 4. 75/125 I also did NCLEX-RN(Pass NCLEX) questions and my scores are ranging from 62%-87% with 75 questions each. My anxiety level is skyrocketing.I have a full time job and family with 2 kids which makes it even harder to concentrate on my self-review. To those who passed and still studying for their upcoming exam, how much time did you/do you spend on studying everyday? How many days before the exam did you/do you plan to stop studying to relax your brain? A day or two? BTW, Im Filipino currently in China and flying back to Philippines for NCLEX.

Anybody knows how to be an AHA instructor?
Thanks all for the answers. I will contact AHA directly to get more info about this. I currently work and live in china making it even harder to find training centers unlike at my home country where you can easily find AHA training centers. As far as Red Cross, I had my training with them few years back but AHA ACLS/BLS is the "big thing" now. Anyway, hope I'll find a way to become an instructor.

Anybody knows how to be an AHA instructor?
Currently working as a school nurse and I would like to be a certified AHA instructor(so I can train teachers and give out certificates). How can I be one? No AHA training centers that can train instructors around where I work. Can I do it only in the states? But I am not in the US and I am not American. Im so lost. I need any inputs.
