Hi everyone, I am interested in applying to Charles Drew University for Fall 2016. I like that the program is only 16 months but is it doable for a registered nurse who works full time? Is anyone applying to this program or anyone in this program currently? I would love feedback. Thanks!!!

Geez! I am on also on the same boat. I started orientation a week ago, yesterday I got a call for an interview for my dream job! I have been applying for that job for a year. Finally, I got an interview! I am excited but nervous. I am also worried because if I get an offer from my dream job, I do not know what to tell my current employer. She has been so nice to me...I dont want to burn any bridges.:redbeathe

I have looked at many hospitals, but they will not hire me in there postpartum dept. I applied to Clear Lake they offered me a job in their postpartum. The problem is it's far from where I live (about 45 mins away) I just want to know if someone who works in Clear Lake to tell me about the work environment. Or does anyone know other hospitals in SW area, medical center or other surrounding areas?

I have been working in med-surg for about a year and I am ready to be an OB nurse. Ever since nursing school I loved it (postpartum is my favorite) It is really HARD to get an OB position geez! I recently had an interview for a postpartum position but I did not get the job because I don't have any postpartum experience. Now I have experience as a nurse but it's not postpartum experience. This is so frustrating!!!! How am I going to get experience in any type of women's service position, if noone does not want to give me a chance? So frustrated. I need help where can I go find an OB position in Houston? I have applied to several hospitals. No luck:crying2:

I feel the same way you do, I hate when people tell me, "oh it will be get better or just hang in there." Honestly, I feel like I am just settling, so are you. Please do NOT settle. Go find your niche!

Honestly, Do want it feels right in your gut. I have six month of med-surg experience and it gets challenging everyday. Especially if you work the day shift, it's HELL! Too many orders from doctors, dealing with CNAs who dont want to help, less time to spend with patients, so many medications that I have not heard before, passing meds all day. I knew I am not cut out to be a m/s nurse, I always wanted to be an OB nurse since I went to my OB clinical rotation. I see what the other posters are saying, yes a L&D for a new grad are HARD to find. Trust me, I have applied to several women's services positions,I get NO responses. It's hard and I am still looking for one now, it's still hard.I took this M/S job because I didn't have a choice. Sorry for venting, lol...I am happy for you. I would call the manager to decline the position. If you choose med-surg, you can work for 2 or more years before applying to L&D again

6E: that's the Medical ICU floor, if you want to do ICU, that's the floor you would most likely start with 5C: is a medical-surgical unit that focuses on patient with neurological problems, it's become the new stroke unit. 5D: med-surg unit with psych issues, you can get patients with diagnosis of DKA and schizophernia or people with suicidal ideations, anxiety, and severe substance abuse It depends on what you want to do, if you want to do Med-surg 5C or 5D is a Great start! If you have any questions, please let me know.

I want to know within a three month period, how did you change specialties? That's amazing, ever since my OB rotation in nursing school, I loved it especially the mother/baby unit. I am in a med-surg unit sighs! The manager and the staff are awesome but I do not like med-surg. After reading your post, you are inspiration that you can change specialties in a short period of time.

Thanks for your replies! I understand med-surg is very helpful and I am gaining experience but I DREAD going to work...I dread it. I dont understand why waking up so early in the morning and working somewhere you cannot stand for a year or more...just why. I guess that's me.

Ever since I have graduate from school I never thought I would work on a med/surg floor. I always wanted to do women's services especially postpartum:redpinkhe. I even done my senior preceptorship in maternal health and I loved it!! I could not find anything due to the hiring freeze, it was hard to do find a job period. I did not want to take the job but I took it because I did not want to be an unemployed new nurse. Sometimes, I wish I waited longer to get the job I wanted! The staff I work with are wonderful, they help me when I am really struggling. I have an excellent nurse manager and nurse director who supports me. But I get so overwhelmed with the patient load, too many medications to give, the doctors coming in every hour to change the orders sometimes those orders can take up 2 pages and their STAT orders!!! Arghhh:mad: Every day, I nearly cry and I vent to my family how much I can't stand it. I feel bad because my heart is not in this type of nursing which makes learning and trying to do my best makes it much harder. I know there are new grads out there who are looking for job, I am consider lucky getting a hospital job but I can't stand it. I don't think I will be there for a year, honestly....I don't see six months being in this field. I dread going to work. I am just venting!!!!

Right now, I am a on a med/surg unit and I am dreading it! I guess my heart is not there, I NEVER wanted to work on a med-surg unit but that's the only place that will hire me. I love women's health! I want to work in a postpartum, L&D or antepartum unit. Ever since nursing school, I was not into the other rotations except L/D and psych. Hopefully, I get to change soon. Eventually, I want to get my masters and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. I am into birth control, and want to work in a clinic similiar to Planned Parenthood.

I am very happy for you! You are an inspiration to me. After I graduate from nursing school, I get to have that SAME passion like you do.

I want to ask a couple of questions. I attended a nursing school but I did not finish the courses because according to my school, (I think this applies to other schools too) If I fail two nursing course I am dismissed from the program. I really want to be a nurse and I do not mind starting over. Here are the questions: 1. Do you think it is an advantage or disadvantage for a nursing to accept a student who have taken nursing courses but failed only two of them?(I know the nursing courses will not transfer) 2. Should I tell these schools that I was at a previous nursing school?I want to apply to schools in TX only. My Previous school was out of state. 3.(This might be a hard question to answer) I am working on another degree right now and hopefully I will be done in December of this year (I want to apply for Spring 2008), Is it easier to apply for the Fast BSN track, Generic BSN or Generic ADN programs? I am really concerned about the competitiveness of applying to the schools I appreciate your replies. I am from Houston and most likely I want to apply to the schools there but I am worried about the competition of getting in. I am thinking about applying to Prairie View, Cy-Fair ,Kingwood College and San Jac in Houston. UTHSCSA and San Antonio College also MWSU in Witchita Falls. Last question...How competitive are these schools?

Hi Duncan!!! How are you? I wanted to ask u a couple of questions about SAC. Do you have to apply to the school 1st or just apply straight into the program? Did you have to take an entrance exam before u get accepted?How many people do they take per semester? I am kinda concerned about my GPA also. Thanks in advance.
