  1. Please give me Pros and Cons of being an Army Nurse

It really depends on the assignment. MEDCENs can be grueling places to work, with 55-60 hour work weeks and a ton of extra duties (think Walter Reed). For the money, you would probably do better working the 60 hours at a local hospital and have less ...
  2. I got about 95k for student loans from Army. But, I do not know if you can do it twice.
  3. Last minute questions for OBLC.....

Hello, I cannot help you with ACU's but I am at OBLC right now. You will have a shared room with light daily maid service with weekly bed linen changes. You could bring some linens if you get cold. We were issued a sleeping bag for the field.
  4. Shut up when I am giving you report...

The JP reminds me of my last day at my last job. I had 3 ICU patients for three consecutive nights, and was handing one off to an experienced, orienting ICU nurse. She asked me if I took a daily weight on the last day. I said "no, that is usually don...
  5. Reluctant to ask, but...

I would not worry about it too much. I had a very outspoken gay Army friend, he loved his job. I am a new commission to the Army Nurse Corps, so, I cannot tell you how LGBT are treated except from his accounts.
  6. Who is in Nursing for the money?

How funny. Nurses who work for the money, how much do you make? Maybe I work for the wrong hospital because it sounds like they are becoming millionaires. I do not think it makes anyone a bad nurse to be in it just for money, but it sounds kind of s...
  7. Help!

    >>Is a trauma nurse usually just an RN?? Yes, UMD is probably a good school for this since many of the instructors work or worked at Shock Trauma. They also offer a Trauma NP (Master's). Trauma is a specialty, not a degree but I think you can g...
  8. Pain Management

Hello, I am a new grad in the ICU since February. During my orientation, I have noticed that we care for a large number of nursing home patients with Stage III and IV decubitus ulcers. Usually, these patients have little or no way to advocate for t...
  9. Administration/Organization at UMD

You can get things done but it will be a lot of work if it is at all out of the ordinary (example: study abroad). Financial Aid is absolutely horrible and you can always count on them to be late. But, I feel considerably more capable and confident c...
  10. Latent TB and Army

I have not taken the oath, I have just been told that I am accepted and that I WILL take my oath. I may want to delay it also for financial reasons. Thanks for your help; I feel much better about this.
  11. Latent TB and Army

Hello, I was recently accepted for a commission in the Army Nurse Corps, which I am very excited about. As I recall, the paperwork they required did not ask me about latent TB, which I have tested positive for. Nor did I see this as an illness, so,...
  12. do you chart vent settings?

We do; some in my unit chart settings in multiple locations. This brings up a concern fir me; can a nurse chart too much? I mean , if respiratory charts it and I chart in a separate location but someone makes a typo, does this suspicion when somethi...
  13. Latent TB and Army

I trust my recruiter and I don't think she is trying to mislead me. She said that they will start me on meds once I actually start. But this information that you quote seems to conflict with her statement. I looked over the form and I think I answer...
  14. Universal Healthcare/Nursing Salaries

Choskins, You are describing a single payer system. Universal just means everyone is insured somehow. Single payer could decrease pay by decreasing reimbursements or if the government owned the hospitals, it could directly decrease nursing pay. I t...
  15. Universal Healthcare/Nursing Salaries

I think UHC and Single Payer are two different but related topics. Single Payer, the government pays and insures, Universal HC can be accomplished in quite a few different ways. I think UHC will increase demand for nursing services and ultimately wag...
  16. which path to chose

I just finished my BSN and I am not an NP. However, I don't think the math adds up for a faster NP than PA and if it does, it is marginal. You still need nursing pre-reqs which I think are about 1.5 years full-time; then, a full-time ADN is another ...
  17. Pay issues

A professor once said that nursing has one of the highest injury rates of all careers due to back injuries. I don't have a citation to back it up but thought I would share. Comparing to police officers and paramedics is a little too narrow in my op...
  18. Salary for JHH

I will just say that did not go so well either. I guess it is obvious but I had negative feelings about that place from the onset. Your floor may be better; so, do not let me discourage you. Frankly, I would not consider working there. On the good ...
  19. Salary for JHH

The recruiter interview was basically a benefits overview... she asked me no questions and when I asked her questions, she told me I will have a day in orientation to discuss benefits. But that was literally all we talked about; so, I did not see the...
  20. Salary for JHH

$57000 including differentials (every 3rd w/e, 50% nights rotating), retention bonuses, and 40 hours per week. They are generally very difficult with scheduling (the above is the norm) but maybe your floor would not be. I interviewed recently.
  21. Mount Vernon neighborhood. It is a short walk and safer than most places and all of Baltimore is kind of cheap. I would probably not live in any other neighborhood. Bolton Hill is safer but not as cheap and farther away.
  22. Moving to Baltimore--quiet/safe areas to live?

Bolton Hill and Mount Vernon. Both are centrally located and on the metro line. I would not want to drive through Baltimore every day. Mt Vernon may not be the safest but it is not that bad at all. Bolton Hill is VERY quiet and rather nice.
  23. Union Memorial

Dont remember the floor number, but avoid oncology floor! That was the worst place I have ever been.
  24. Nursing is taking over my life!!!!

Many antidepressants are used for anxiety and are often considered the first drugs you should try if trying pharmaceutical treatment. "anti-depressant" is simply a class, not a mechanism of action.
  25. Nursing is taking over my life!!!!

I had a similar problem but my anxiety was performance based. Since I needed needed relief ASAP (b/c I was screwing up on exams), I asked my MD for a beta blocker. Then, I made an appointment with a counselor. It helped. Meds and talk are not mutuall...
