  1. The job is as stressful as you make it. I let everything roll of my back and just keep a positive attitude. Finding work life balance is key. Accept your mistakes, don't dwell, learn and move on. Focus on anything positive even the small things. Make friends w your co workers. Try to understand why patients act out or accept that some people/patients aren't nice people and let it go. Ok. Getting off my soap box now. :)
  2. its closed now anyway:(
  3. i contracted with UCSF in 2008 and my contract was 30 something an hour with the time and a half over 8 hours...and I wouldve received 2600$/mo stiped for housing or private housing. I didnt go at the last minute.

banners ok for a traveler..im staff but not at banner...i couldnt do staff at banner but the facilities arent bad...its a beautiful area im sure you will love it..and none of their housing is bad
  5. I am hoping to travel there. I think one year is too little experience. Im still nervous with 4 years neuro ICU under my belt...you really have to hit the floor running and in nyc the conditions are sometimes not as good as what you may be used to..plus if you dont have any connections there it is a rough city to start out in.....
  6. First off let me wish you luck on your final!! KEep us posted!! Second, no joke, if were one of those ladies you better bet I would have been in the deans office reporting him for sexual harrassment!! That is completely and totally inappropriate...How can you learn anything in a setting like that? Im grateful now that atleast my teacher is nice and willing to help, that is if she remembers!! We just finished our second week of class so I am hoping that I will like it more when we really start getting into things...Lucky for me in my class we dont have to do any research papers or anything soo thats always a plus! Good luck all! keep us posted!!!
  7. I hear you!!! My teacher is very nice but she is just kinda out there...she takes her notes directly from the book and just reads strait off them...i can read the book! She then proceeds in lab to throw out terms that she has NEVER gone over! When I go to look them up in the book they are in chapters that we arent supposed to cover for weeks! ugh...lol...she starts sentences and doesnt finish them and in lab if I ask her for help she says ok but then wanders off and forgets I asked for help! Our second lab we had to grow some NASTY bacteria it smelled sooo bad! I just took my first test and I think I did well but the class drags...its totally uninteresting..I cant stand micro but I LOVEE AP:)
  8. no anatomy with that physiology? lol :)
  9. thanks guys..its our 2nd week of class and we had our first test today...it was ok but only bc i studied hard for it..i have a feeling a lot of people in my class failed..a good teacher makes all the difference...oh well that just means more work out of class for me!!! Who else is taking micro??
  10. My sister in law said there were quite a few cc colleges in or near Louisville KY that didnt have waiting lists...
  11. Hi all! Anyone out there taking Micro this quarter?? I am and so far its pretty hard! Thought we could start a thread about our micro experiences...I had my first test today and it was soo hard over 80 questions.....ugh...we had to grow some smelly bacteria this week too....My instructor is not very good at lecturing and forgets to actually lecture then she just expects you to know it....how am i supposed to know what hemolysis is if you dont tell me! ANyway, here is a good link for micro...it has some awesome quizzes and online notecards...http://www.mhhe.com/talaro5 We can make this thread for anything to do with Micro! Where is everyone from and where are you taking micro and for what program??
  12. I agree, no matter what any one says ADN/BSN no knowledge is EVER wasted!!!!! Go for the BSN! as for ADN programs "being better at preparing you" as someone said in an earlier post...i dont know how anyone can make that generalization unless they have actually attended every ADN or BSN program...besides might as well do it now and get it out of the way, that way if you want the option for prof. growth after a year or so of experience a BSN can offer you that and you wont have to worry about going back! Good Luck!
  13. LMAO.... oh my...i dont think anything i can say can top those stories....the worst I can muster up is...my very very first day of CNA clincials I had to do pericare for the very first time....my partner pretended to faint so she left the room, it was atleast 100 degrees and my resident had poop all over her...it was so hot and my instructor was sitting there saying, no wipe the other way...lets just say that broke me in....
  14. Sheri, there are programs out there where you can enter directly into an accelerated masters program. I did that and my whole program lasts 15 months...I have a BA in Psych/Soc...several schools in my area as well as surrounding states offer these degrees...as long as you have a bachelors in something...pm me if you want more details...
  15. LOL i agree, I definetly didnt choose nursing to become rich...as long as i can live...anyway...i think that the OP isnt saying that shes worried about the salary rather she was just curious about her friends comment...if anyone was jealous it was her classmate...anyway...not really sure what monster means by "staff nurse" but im thinking its just a broad term for an RN...they had other options such as "head nurse" and they had some specialties listed...if you want to check it out go to http://www.monster.com and create a basic salary report. Its hard to tell what the difference in salaries would be since everywhere is diff...
  16. good point, what is your original language? i see you are pretty fluent, how long did it take you, if you dont mind me asking? any suggestions on what i can do to help my classmate that will be most effective in helping her learn the language?
  17. AWW THANKS:) i too find myself here in these forums when i have two seconds lol so i know the feeling.... i agree, i want to help her, i moved my seat so that we can sit next to eachother....i have to admit she does intrigue me as I am asian as well but grew up in Ohio not ever being in touch with my culture...so im hoping that our next conversation will go a little smoother language wise...no one else in my class is making an effort so maybe ill try to set up a class study group..:)
  18. Im with ya, I dont think i want to do LTC either, I worked in LTC for awhile and some love it but its just not for me, my true calling is peds!! good luck!
  19. i think so too...i couldnt be a 9 to 5er though, that would drive me nuts, i love nursing bc of the flexible schedule!!:)
  20. i would really like to learn a foreign language, i took latin in highschool/college, when i get 2 seconds i think that i will...i hear spanish is the best bc there are so many spanish speaking americans...anyway, i agree, i think the best way to become fluent is to become immersed...thats why when i noticed she notated in korean i was kind of confused, but to each their own, maybe that just helps her learn, who knows.
  21. wow you hit the nail on the head, i have met so many of those types of people in my life but just couldnt put into words exactly what it was that i didnt like about them...but yep thats definetly it...in one of my nursing courses there is a girl just like that, she never forgets to point out that she has a job waiting for her as soon as she gets out of school at Univeristy hospital, and she was so great that they are saving a job just for her...blah blah lol..i live in NKY and i have heard of new nurses down here making 20-28/hr..i dont know what xray techs make but i know my mom did it for awhile years ago and she transfered to 'unit secretarty' bc it offered her more money....so i would definetly think rns even new grad woujld make more....call a local hospital and ask..or go to http://www.monster.com and they have a salary wizzard there where u can put in your zip code and profession and it will tell you what the ave salary is...in fact i just did it for you kind of...a staff nurse (general RN) in Louisville, Ky, according to Monster.com says the median salary is...50k-55k/yr (base salary)..wow seems high...i couldnt find anything i thought was similar to xray tech...they have MRI tech but i dont know if those are even close?? lol...
  22. its amazing what one person can handle, when we think we cant do anymore, something else comes along and yet somehow we handle it, it will be hard but you can do it!! just remember it will be one long hard year but after that it will get so much easier! good luck
  23. Yes yes, I am very familiar with the hard work thing...lol...last quarter I managed to pull a 4.0...this quarter, well with 8 classes i'm keeping fingers crossed...some of the individuals in my class say that my teacher is difficult bc his tests have over 200 questions and from what i have heard the questions are very nit picky, oh well, that just means a few hours extra studying here or there..we'll see how it goes...im feeling by the end of may i'll be so stressed out. Ive never taken 8 classes before.... So far in Micro....i'm not appreciating my instructors teaching methods...she is "kinda out there" and doesnt finish her sentences, its very hard to follow her train of thought as she strays off topic a lot and is always giggling...lol...i heard from another classmate who had her last quarter that on test days she forgot there was supposed to be a test so for two of their exams she had to give them take home tests!! ill be happy if that happens to us...lol...
  24. No one is giving her a hard time. I assume when you say "naysayers" you are talking about me? No one in my class including me has done anything to "hold her back"! I already said I know that i could not do it...its only a week into my class and I am trying!! Despite my 10 hour school day I am trying to talk to this girl and arrange some study time with her, that is if she wants to. I thought I made my self very clear when I said "I wish the best for this girl and hope she succeeds" or that i'm not trying to hinder her in any way, I just wanted to know what you guys thought about her and if she could be a nurse with such a large language barrier. I feel like everyone thinks i'm saying that this girl shouldnt be a nurse or she is incapable, I never meant that, i was only worried!!! I know that she has to work twice as hard, in fact I think that I said something to that effect in an earlier post, and I think I also said if the situation was reversed I would find it very difficult! Copy and pasted from one of my earlier posts: "This is such a tricky subject...I think if the situation were reversed and I was in a foreign county trying to be a nurse, I would find it to be very difficult....I would worry all the time that I wasnt understanding everything...i mean it could be such a simple mistake but in the medical field simple mistakes can sometimes lead to catastophes..."Not in any way am trying to say this individual shouldnt be a nurse..in fact i'm happy that the nursing field is growing more diverse and hope the best for her...just wondering if any of you had run into this particular situation and how those students did or are doing now?" Sorry im not trying to start an argument but I just want to say this one more time to make sure its clear: I hope this girl does great, i hope she becomes a great nurse, i hope the best for her, i hope she becomes fluent and is very rewarded in her career, i hope that i will have some time that i can get to know her, i would never do anything to hinder her from achieving her goal.
  25. thanks for the encouragement doug! Ive studied the CNS all day and now i'm working on micro... :selfbonk: only 8 weeks left!
