That's what I was thinking also. They said when EMS arrived they checked and there was no pulse. But this is after they'd been doing cpr for quite some time. Could that have contributed to it?

An acquaintance of mine witnessed someone having a seizure in a restaurant. She and several others jumped up to assist the woman. 911 was called. The dispatcher informed the group that help was on the way and to wait the seizure out. A woman said the victim was turning blue so they needed to start cpr (no pulse was checked). The dispatcher informed them she was actively seizing and not to touch her. They started cpr anyway. This woman eventually ended up dying. Now, I'm wondering if the inappropriate cpr that was started contributed to this woman's outcome? Could performing cpr on someone with a pulse be fatal? Should I inform the woman that it's best to wait seizures out since they're generally self limiting. I don't want her to take offense, but I also don't want her thinking cpr is the appropriate response for seizures if she were to ever witness another one in the future.

Where I live you can extern all year long. The best way, IMO, to find an extern position is to put the term "nurse extern" into indeed dot com and save the search. You should get email updates when new positions are posted. I'm an extern currently in the ICU and I absolutely love it!! I'm constantly learning and it has solidified that critical care is absolutely where I want to work! Not only that but I'm almost guaranteed a position on my unit when I graduate, and I absolutely love the unit culture where I work! Good luck on your journey!

I would call the nurse recruiter of a few hospitals and ask them to be honest with you about whether or not they're hiring ADN grads. That's what I did. I'll be finishing up my BSN shortly.

Consider me one of those new grads who will be going directly into a specialty as soon as I graduate. I know where I want to be (critical care) and I'm going straight for it. I'm lucky that I landed an internship in the CVICU in my last year of nursing school. The unit I'm on typically hires their interns if they are a good fit. With my desire for learning, drive, and ambition I have no doubt that I will make my goals reality.

We had an hour lunch and were free to go where we pleased.

When I did health assessment the lab manual was absolutely needed. We had to do exercises in it and rip out the pages to turn them in. So if I were you I'd ask your teacher. I had a classmate who had an older edition and she stopped using it because she she could never find the corresponding pages. She was my partner so she just ended up using mine.

Interesting! I don't have any advice seeing how I'm just a student, but I do appreciate you sharing your new found knowledge. I wonder what the rationale is for this? But honestly, I feel that if your job wanted to fire you, you'd be fired, not getting an extra week of orientation. Seems like they want you to succeed!! Lol. I see more bashing on this site of BSNs more than anything. Especially for pursuing a more "difficult and expensive degree" when ADNs are "better prepared clinically" and blah blah blah. I don't see why anyone has to judge another's choice at all. We all take the same NCLEX right? What works for you works for you and be proud of it! Don't let anyone make you feel less than because of your choices. It's awesome your location is still actively hiring ADN nurses! I wish I could say the same for mine, but job listings in all the major hospital systems specifically request BSN degrees so I chose the BSN route as the best for my family and I and I am so glad I did. Also, since I was able to take all of my general eds at a community college, and I now go to an affordable state university my entire BSN degree costs virtually the same as an ADN + RN-BSN would. Not every BSN degree costs an astronomical amount of money and there are plenty of locations that are hiring ADNs on a daily basis. Research and staying informed is key. Congrats on your upcoming graduation!

Yes A and B were the one I was stuck on for a little bit. My thought was that the patient was becoming dyspnic r/t anxiety of the upcoming surgery you know? So calming him may relieve the anxiety. But I'm probably just looking too much into the question right? ( I have a bad habit of thinking all the questions are trying to trick me)

Hi, I recently completed my 2nd semester of nursing school and aced this semester:woot: The one thing about finals that really sucks is the fact that you can not reveiw the questions that you got wrong along with the rationales. There was one question on my medsurg final that has stuck with me and I just can't quite figure out what the right answer would have been! I emailed my professor but she hasn't gotten back to me so I'm curious as to wehat you all would think. The question was along the lines of: There is a lung cancer patient who is waiting to be taken into surgery. While he waits he starts complaining that he is SOB and his O2 sats begin to drop. What should the nurse do NEXT? A.) Turn up the oxygen flow rate B.) Calm the patient using guided imagery C.) Go and get the physician D.) Call a code I'm pretty sure the answer I picked was to calm the patient since you need an order to adjust oxygen flow rate. I didn't think C was right either since that would be leaving the patient alone and they could deteriorate while gone, and D is just obviously wrong. Am I right? And if not why? Thanks!!

Good job!! I think we finished up prereqs and started our programs around the same time!! It's so crazy to think we're actually DOING it, you know? Instead of just fantasizing about it. But one things for sure, I can't wait for this semester to be OVER!!

I have two small kids and somehow managed to get all A's as well the first semester of my BSN program! I think the key is making sure you know your study habits and being serious about getting your stuff done. Time management is essential. I can not stress that enough. You also have to be very disciplined. I actually rarely studied while my kids were awake unless there was a test for one of the *hard* classes coming up (mainly Patho or Foundations). I studied mainly at school, but also during naps and after bed time. That was it. But when it was time to study I cut off my phone (when home) and got down to business! It's definitely doable, but I will agree with others who say the first semester is probably the easiest, at least in a program like mine. I have medsurg next semester and I hear that's a "whole 'nother beast". Good luck!

I know a lot of us start nursing school on Monday (8/25) so this is our very last weekend before nursing school begins! What are you doing to enjoy this last weekend? Unfortunately for me I'm quitting my job and it's my last weekend of work so I'll be busting butt there to add some last minute savings to our acct.

Coming into nursing school with a 4.0 I definitely will aim for A's but will be perfectly happy with B's or C's. I always will give my best effort though, it's just in my nature. I feel like if I'm not trying my hardest I'm going to fail.

In this age where "unnecesareans" seem to almost be the norm doulas do what they can to help a birthing mom achieve a natural birth or at least feel in control of her birthing experience. Why do you find your doula acquaintance annoying?

Sorry for the confusion @Amari_mom1 I was actually referring to the new nursing bulding at the U of M. It will be ready Summer of 2015 :-) Southwests new nursing building looks awesome!!

It's going to be open next summer so we'll get at least 3 semesters there. It will be a nice break from walking all across that huge campus! When is your orientation?
