How long did it take you to master inserting an IV?
palpation is a better indicator than visualization...keep trying...you don't learn nearly as much on a successful start that you do on a line you blow...learn from each mistake, evolve your technique

NG tube in an intubated patient
per Altra: ...good luck getting past the cuff if everything is correct, and an OG is much less risky re: infection than an NG

I don't need a PCP- I have the ER.
This situation is an unfortunate reality, as ER nurses we'll always see this type of pt. Hopefully you've got a good doc on shift who is going to set the pt straight and not order any narcotics.

Lidocaine with Rocephin?
I've always used Lido, the compassionate thing to do. I work with a retired Special Forces RN, he states if his crew needed Rocephin d/t a wild night out he'd use sterile water and let 'em know about it.

ED Cheat sheet?
ditch the cheat sheet, carry some sticky notes in your pocket, you'll get a flow eventually.

Getting burnt out with non urgent patients
if you're not jaded by the demanding seekers and frequent fliers you're an android from outer space, or a psych nurse... its part of the job, don't let em get you down...just appreciate the REAL emergencies more when they come around, the price we pay.

Nurses week gifts from employer
A blessing on the hands (for caring and healing, of course)-which included...a chaplain pouring rosemary scented olive oil on my hands while she thanked me. Meanwhile I've got a code 2 SOB coming in and a belligerent 5150 to deal with. Ever try to wash olive oil off your hands in a hurry? Thanks, hospital.
