EKU DNP program
I am in the DNP program. I already have my MSN. There is no specialty focus unlike the PMHNP. Didactic portion of the classes are 8 week per class and are online. Assignments are weekly and mainly focused on preparing you to transition into a Doctorate role after graduating but the program also prepares you on how in implement EBP and evaluate outcomes. Each course is in conjunction to a piece of your capstone. I personally feel the professors are there for you, they do expect you to think at a doctorate level but they want you to succeed too! Think about it....if you succeed, it reflects back on the program, showing that they can graduate 100 percent of their enrollment. You pick your capstone project...assess a need, implement an intervention and evaluate the outcomes. I am happy so far. It is manageable while working full-time, raising a young family and still enjoying life...I am speaking for myself! I'm not shooting for straight A...just passing and passing with B and better because in the end it's all about walking across that stage and being handed my DNP degree!

Catch 22 to get certified or get a job in Oncology
Yes that is the book to get chemo cert. There is a 2-day course you have to take and pretty much everybody passes. If you don't, they go over the test with you and give you another test so you can pass the same day. The best way to learn chemotherapy is by doing it so it will make more sense when you are handling chemotherapy. When you start studying for the OCN cert. get the "green Core Curriculum" study guide and question book, in addition to using the chemotherapy book above.

Catch 22 to get certified or get a job in Oncology
Alright I have been an oncology nurse for over 12 years. You need to get chemo therapy certifided to handle and administer chemo therapy. Most hospital will require you to obtain certification within 6 months of hire. Chemo certification is different than Oncology nurse certification. ONS is an professional organization. ONCC is a coporation that provides certification for oncology. OCN is your title once you get certifide so you would sign your name, RN, OCN. In terms of getting OCN certified, most would like for you to get certified after you are hired. Like I said I have been an oncology nurse for over 12 years, I have worked at many places, and most ask their employees to be certified at some point after hire. If it is a requirement for hiring, they are probably trying to wean out their applicants but if you show your interest, I am sure, they will pass it by. I just got OCN certified myself. I hope this helps you.

EKU DNP program
Actually, it has been going well for me. I am really glad I applied to this program. It's early to tell if it's going to stay like this but personally I think I made a good decision.

EKU DNP program
I started the DNP program last week! So far, I have enjoyed the flexibility. My 2 girlfriends are in the FNP program. They started off with theory and had to write papers. It is manageable while working. We all work full-time and have kids. You just need to be disciplined with your readings and homework. I have delegated Friday and Saturday nights to do school work with doing some reading throughout the week. If you have specific questions, let me know.

Raise your hand if you worked and went to NP school full time?

Has anyone obtained their degree for FNP/PNP but never practiced?
Yes! it's different from state to state too. I got my FNP in California...and worked for 2 months then took a travel position. I too loved the flexible 3-12hr schedule. Moved from state to state and ended up 4 years later in a state that in order to get license, I needed to take my national certification (in the state of Ca you don't need your ANCC to get licensed). I can use my MSN to be an educator or CNS but some position require you to have your APRN to be in these roles, some don't depend on your institution. I am stuck in between a rock and a hard plate now. I love my current employment but I need to be license as an APRN to be in an advance practice role. If I go back to my old employment, I wouldn't need to. I have decided the best thing to do is to get nationally certifided and get licensed. Now I have to take my FNP boards and since I have been out of school for almost 10 years, it's hard to study for something that you really haven't done. I have glad i did my FNP instead of any other speciality because it is more flexible and employers are more willing to hire someone with no experience. Good luck to you!

Sorry to hear that... I did not pass my AANP the first time either and I am going to take in again in 3 weeks. Its a bump in the road but keep your head up and stay focused. I used the AANP CE site to get my CE for free. Let me find the link and I will send it to you. There are CEs that covers all areas..assess, dx...etc..

SFSU gMSN (masters-entry) vs BSN
it's really not "general" it's a master's in nursing, you can focus on CNS and I think now they have an option to do the FNP track too. 3 of my classmates opted to do the FNP track in our second year (that was the first year that they offered it to us) the rest of us got clinical nurse specialist (i think). A year after I graduated from the MSN program, I went and did a post-certification program and got my FNP. I went to SFSU for that too. I also got into USF, Samuel Marritt and few other schools but I chose to go to SFSU because it was cheap and I already knew the system. I had an excellent experience during my post-master program. I don't think it would be that hard. I would say most of my classmates are working as floor nurses, by choice, some are FNPs, some are doing case management, some work in outpatient clinic and some also teach clinicals. There is so much you can do with a RN license. It doesn't matter how you get it...BSN, MSN or ADN. I guess it ultimately what you want to do in the future. Plus make sure that you want to stay in California. Licensing is different in other states. The nursing profession is changing and they are changing a lot of requirements. I work at a facility that as of last year, any ADN nurses that get hired will need to go back to get their BSN. Currently ADN nurses are being asked to go back to school. Most management have to have a BSN or higher. A few colleges in this state have dropped their MSN program and encourage advance practice nurses to get their DNP. I am not sure what your goals are but it would help you decide on what degree you want. Plus, I think financial aid rather give/borrow money to a student who is getting a higher degree with a BA/BS than a student who is trying to get another BA/BS, (like Pell grants and scholarships).

EKU DNP program
Anyone have any thoughts on Eastern Kentucky University DNP program? I live in KY and prefer to do an online program. I am been researching and there are a lot of outstanding DNP online programs but a lot of them require you to be on campus a few times a year and that may be hard for me. Therefore I opted to stay locally. If anyone can give me advice on EKU DNP program, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ANCC and AANP
First of all... I want to say "Congradulations!" What a milestone you have just accomplished. I am studying for the exam right now. I am struggling on which exam to take. The AANP is more clinical while the ANCC is only half clinical and half non-clinical. I think I would do well with the non-clinical stuff, it's stuff that I am used to doing. All my classmates and friend have taken the AANP. Can you give me some advice on what you think? What helped you the most on passing your exam?
-
ANCC FNP...any suggestions??
Since the ANCC is 1/2 clinical and 1/2 non-clinical, I heard the Fitz's non-clinical stuff is really good for that. Leik covers a good amount of clinical stuff that is covered in the exam. Good luck

SFSU gMSN (masters-entry) vs BSN
I graduated from the gMSN program a long time ago. It was the best educational decision that I have made. I absolutely LOVE the program and am glad I did the MSN program than the BSN program. It was competitive getting accepted but they only count your last 20 something units for your calculated GPA. Thank goodness because I didn't do so hot my freshman year in college! I would be more than happy to talk to you about the program and I am sure things have changed too. I had planned to go to nursing school right after I graduated my undergrad but I did not get into my first choice which was SFSU. I got into 3 other schools but I decided to wait, take a year off from school and apply the following year. I completed the MSN program on time, worked as a RN while finishing my MSN as a CNS. I even went back and got my FNP too. Let me know if I can advise in any way.

Barkley FNP home study review vs. Leik live FNP review....
I really like Maria Leik webnair review. I believe this year she is offering an April course. It's 2 weekends and 1 monday. She is great and gives you lots of good material to know for the test.
