  1. In my opinion you are in no way at fault. 1.) You triend to get the bed alarm but it was not available 2.) You were not even in the the room or on shift when the patient stood up 3.) Its really the other nurses word of what happened; so who knows what happened 4.) If the patient was instructed to not get up without assistance and was AOx3 then the fall is the patients fault in my opinion.
  2. Sounds like you had a psych patient. I would have acted as if they were a psych patient, when you do that it helps put things in perspective for you and you wont get offended as easily.
  3. Soon to be male graduate nurse. I feel the same as the OP. I do not plan on going to my pinning. The pinning doesn't symbolize anything to me. The main accomplishment is that I finished nursing school. I dont see skipping the pinning as disrespectful at all. Additionally, I hear that many pinning ceremonies can get really sentimental and emotional and that can get awkward for a guy.
  4. Respectfully, you are wrong. Do a little research. I can shoot a 40 cal or a 45 with one hand, it doesnt knock me around at all.
  5. So by that logic.................... Lets just make terrorism illegal, and drugs................................... Police can go door to door to confiscate heroin! And we can throw all the narcan away!
  6. #1 You wouldn't shoot at the attacker unless you had a good shot............common sense #2 Know your target and what is beyond it at all times #3 You could take a defensive position and let the attacker come to you, they would never even know where the shot came from before they hit the ground. #4 A 40 cal or a 45 center mass shot with body armor on would still knock the attacker flat on their back, knock the wind out of them and probably break ribs. A little common sense would go a long way in this scenario. I dont even have a CCW because it is against the law to carry a gun anywhere I would want to carry one anyways. If it was made legal to CC at work and by the nursing board then I would definately get my CCW.
  7. There's a good chance your plan will change after you do your nursing home rotation.......and once you see all the other options out there. Of course your afraid, you havent even started nursing school yet. You will build confidence in nursing school.
  8. I will be graduating soon and really want to work in an ICU. Any advice or wisdom on this? Is it a good idea? Critical care is where my interest lies. Please let me know your opinions/experiences.
  9. I would lay low and look for another job or maybee an internal transfer?
  10. I am somewhat confused about the NP salaries. Where I am an RN can work their 3 12's and pick up an extra 12 and make around 80k pre tax. Why in the world would we go 50k in debt and spend 3 years working our butt off to become a NP with no pay raise? Seems NP's should be making at least 100k.
  11. I have no problem with the email. Just follow the rules. Your professor is right.
  12. If you see a clear danger to the patient then report your concerns to somebody. By the sounds of it I would report it to a supervisor. If the supervisor does nothing with it and that nurse does something wrong it's on them and not you. I also wouldn't gossip to other nurses about it. I would report what I saw in writing and keep a copy for myself and then I would forget about it.
  13. I would NEVER work with a chiropractor who is a practicing chiropractor. And I used to be one! I left the chiro field for a much better career IMO. If they are a chiro who left the field and aren't practicing anymore that's a different story IMO.
  14. Chiropractic.............
  15. Can you be a licensed DC and go through RN clinicals....legally? Will the schools malpractice for the RN students still cover you if you are licensed as a DC at the time? I am considering this route. I just question whether my DC license will interfere with the school insuring me for malpractice while Im in clinicals? Can you have both RN and DC licenses at the same time ?
  16. There is still people on the waitlist. I was told they are going to admit everyone who went on the waitlist before Sept 2013.
  17. Have you been formally notified by letter? Were you just simply told to expect next fall?
  18. Personally I think the ADN is the best way. Its a fraction of the cost of a BSN. Once you get yout ADN you can do an online BSN in 1-1.5 yrs and still be WELL under the cost of a universty BSN program. You can get an RN job with an ADN. You can't be picky. You may have to settle for LTC or a less desireable unit.......so what.......put your dues in for a few years, get your BSN, then get a good hospital job and you're all set. The cost of an ADN + Online RN to BSN is roughly 20-25k. The total cost of a university BSN will likely be 50k plus. When you start paying those loans off you will be glad to have saved all that money.
  19. Bottom line. Do the best you can. In the end the doctor has to order the meds or change them. If something is sketchy and you call the doc and you get hung up on or blown off..............just note that the doc hung up on you in the patients file and move on (try to find another doc to help). If something were to happen to the patient he would get his *&^ sued off. Bottom line here; once the docs see your noting everything in the file they wont hang up on you anymore. They will listen because they know you just threw the ball in their court.
  20. It is Osteoporosis. In an older woman as hormone levels change the Osteoblast activity slows down while Osteoclast activity slightly out paces it. Net result = decreased bone density. This isn't likely an issue of low bone density because of low calcium. The cells inside the bones themselves are not using the CA2+ in the blood like they used to............ If you have more questions just ask PS-If your blood calcium levels are low, the body will "steal' calcium from the bones FYI This appears to be a classical case of osteoporosis in an older woman. You could clinically correlate with asking her about her diet, and also checking thyroxine (T3-T4) to see if hormones are off. Maybee even a CBC for good measure
  21. Is a small hernia a problem in passing the nursing school physical? or for a job later on?
  22. Do any of you work while in nursing school? If so what type of jobs are good to look for while I'm doing my clinicals? I am a chiropractor right now, but I can't keep being a chiropractor while in nursing school because of conflicting hours. Just wondered if anyone had some suggestions. I wont need to make much, living expenses and food are taken care of by spouse. Thanks
  23. Dont stress out about the HESI. All in all I found it to be quite easy. The math part was very basic math/applied math. What I found the hardest was actually the Grammar portion. I studied a HESI study book I bought at the college book store for about 6 hours and I got a 90. If you were a decent student in High School and pulled decent grades on your pre reqs you WILL be fine. Good Luck
  24. Hi all. I am a chiropractor in the process of becoming an RN. I have noticed that some colleges have waitlists and others do not. Are waitlist colleges of less quality? Why do some do this while others do not?
