'Unhealthy' nurses...bad examples?
Such a great point! Hospital food is awful enough for pts, the food offered to employees is worse! I know my local hospital has different junk food every Friday - make your own sundaes etc.

'Unhealthy' nurses...bad examples?
We just had this discussion in school. I was never a smoker and remember as an aid when other aids would often go outside for smoking breaks. Sometimes the nurses would go too leaving me (at age 16) alone with an entire floor of pts!! I've been thin, overweight, and normal weight. I've seen first hand how I'm treated much better in general by the public the smaller I am. I don't agree with discrimination of overweight/obese people or smokers. With that said, I do think it's hypocritical to tell a pt one thing and do the opposite. Over two years ago I created a diet and exercise plan that I knew would work for me. I lost 80lbs and kept it off. My friend who is a nurse and very obese critized my plan to no end. I didn't listen to her because it didn't make sense to take her advice - even knowing her credentials. I have pock marks on my face because as a teenager I scrubbed my acne until it bled. I would never work in a dermatologist's office simply because I don't think patients would take my advice about care for the skin seriously. Even if I knew what I was talking about, why would they listen?

Female Nursing Students Dont like me !
Well that explains a little, however many of us change our values when we are adults. It's interesting how we preceive things based on our childhoods. My son always went to a female doctor and had a friend who's mother was female. When he was about 6, he got sick and I took him to a male dr -- our primary wasn't working that day. Later he kept telling my husband that the nurse did this, the nurse did that. My husband asked, what did the dr do? He claimed he didn't see a dr, just a two nurses. One man and one woman. He was amazed when I explained to him that men can be doctors too! :rotfl:

I heard somewhere that flushing pills
All of the sudden the water I've been drinking is starting to taste funny. Yuck! We have a well, but I'm not sure it's any better.... I love the idea of recycling meds. What a great way to reduce costs and help the environment. What do you think will the idea catch on?

Non smoker working in a smoker's home
Thanks for all of your replies. I totally agree that I don't have the right to tell people what do to in their own homes. That's why I'm so concerned about saying anything. Growing up my father smoked in our house and I was a sickly kid, had respitory problems, and non of us knew it was connected to the smoke until I somehow got better after moving out. Duh I guess I just didn't want to make big deal about it, seeing as I'm new. However, I now realize I really have to make an issue, because it is an issue. I'm going to talk to my boss (haven't started yet) and maybe Dr if I need to. I'm more sensitive to smoke now than ever. If I walk into a smokers' home I need to walk out right away,, otherwise I'll get dizzy and vomit. (Yep it's happened more than once) I don't think that will make a good impression!! :chuckle

Vaccinations
All parents have to make informed decisions based on their own research. I choose to delay vaccinations and only had some vaccinations done, not all. If vaccines are so effective, why do so many people win law suits, and why do the ingredients for certain vaccines keep changing? Also I'd much rather my children have lifetime immunity through getting the actual virus - i.e. chicken pox, then getting a shot only to delay the child getting chicken pox ten or twelve years later, at a much more dangerous time to get it. (It's happening to A LOT of my friends right now). IMO Babies way too young are pumped up with way too much junk, and that's scary. Breastmilk is the best way to keep babies healthy, plain and simple. Even my Dr was supportive of my decision. :)

Kids home from school sick...could it be an opportunity?
I currently own my own family daycare, and I think it's a great idea! I agree that it may be tricky with different illnesses. I used to work in a daycare with an RN, and a "get well" room, but the problem was that it was only one room. If you could get a facility with many different rooms, it could work. You could also charge more than a typical daycare, and I'm sure parents would pay. Whenever my kids are sick, the parents beg me to stay open, (I never do) as many of them don't want to take yet another day off (and my kids are rarely sick). I also get parents who try to pretend their kids aren't too sick for daycare, but I've been doing this long enough to know better. I wish I had a sick daycare to refer parents to. I think if you had a great training program for staff, you would over time get a good rep for sanitary conditions and parents would bring their kids without worrying too much about them getting yet another illness. Of course you'd want to get all your paperwork to protect yourself.

eating at the desk
Okay, so hospitals expect the following: Nurses are allowed no breaks Nurses are not allowed to eat or drink at the desk, only during breaks in the cafeteria But there are no breaks, so nurses do not eat or drink, and work their butts off while starving and dehydrated for up to 12 hours. Hmm wonder why there are soooo many staff nursing jobs posted

What is wrong with people? That is so wrong on so many levels!!- Non smoker working in a smoker's home
I'm a pre-nursing student starting in Sept 05, and I'm also about to start a new job as an aide with a home health agency. I'm exicted about it, but my biggest concern is smoke filled homes. I get awfully sick around cig smoke, even if it's just in the air, and no one is actually lighting up around me. I was wonder how you non-smokers deal with smoke filled homes. Thanks!- How did you find out about allnurses?
I was actually looking for nursing horror stories :chuckle . I was reading a lot of websites designed to get more people into nursing, and I KNEW it wasn't as glamourous as these sites were making it out to be! So I ended up here and read lots of gross stories, poor work conditions, politics, and nurses who regret going into nursing. I STILL want to be a nurse -- and I'm so gald I have a realistic picture of what my job will be like, thanks to this Allnurses!- When circ's go bad...
I read that wrong the first time. I thought you wrote " I like guys memberes, period." Man is my head in the gutter today. :rotfl: :rotfl:- Top 10 ER Visits
