  1. Help! OLOL or Southeastern nursing school??

I agree. I attended SLU nursing school and did not have a pleasant experience. You learn nursing theory, which is mostly useless in the real world. I don't know anything about OLOL, but I know I was miserable at SLU. Good luck.
  2. Florida Hospital vs. Orlando Regional

I would definitely recommend FL Hosp. over ORMC. The recruiters at ORMC misrepresented benefits. I do not work at FL Hosp, but several nurses I know do or have and they highly recommend it as a place of employment. But, go on interviews to both place...
  3. SLU in Hammond

The first semester you go to hospital twice for an hour to do a complete assessment. The second semester you go for one day (it's been awhile!); I think 7 to 1. You go the day before for an hour to look through your patient's chart. The third, fourth...
  4. SLU in Hammond

I lived in Hammond while I was in school. From what I understand, Hammond has not been too badly hit by the hurricane. Yes, lots of care plans written by hand. Most instructors are very strict and they require a lot of attention. Usually take several...
  5. SLU in Hammond

No, that's exactly why it is hard. In nursing school, tests are all about application and very little memorization. You read the question and all four multiple choice answers seem okay, so you just have to understand the material and be able to apply...
  6. SLU in Hammond

Some of the instructors are pretty mean, probably close to half. Their are only a few who actually care and the others are just there and don't say much or advocate for the students. Administration doesn't take complaints seriously from the students....
  7. SLU in Hammond

I graduated with my bachelor's degree in nursing from SLU in May of '04. While I was in school, I hated the instructors and thought the curriculum was too strenuous. However, after graduation I was thankful to have went through SLU's program, because...
  8. public health nursing in florida

http://www.doh.state.fl.us Click on the link on the left hand side that says nursing. From there you should be able to access the online app. If you have any questions, let me know.
  9. Did anyone try to talk you out of being a nurse?

    I agree.
  10. Did anyone try to talk you out of being a nurse?

I commend you on your pride as a nurse (all of us, after all, are NURSES). However, as an RN, I have seen LPN's get very little respect and their pay is usually 7 or so more dollars less an hour (at best). You are lucky to work in critical care/ED. M...
  11. Did anyone try to talk you out of being a nurse?

I just have to say that even though what you say is harsh, I totally agree with you. My friend's sister became an LPN and it took her 15 mos. of school. However, a family member is going through an associate degree program and will finish in two year...
  12. Need opinion on transferring career

I would say at this point not to give up on nursing. I have been an RN for a year and my opinion of nursing has varied a great deal. LTC RN's have a very different job than hospital RN's or public health RN's, etc. You just have to find your niche. I...
  13. Could Public Health be my niche?

Thanks for what you said. I have been an RN in the hospital setting for one year. I have been offered a PHN job, with great hours, but really low pay. What you said makes me realize that when you hate your job (and I did not like the hospital), no am...
  14. Got the job....

I also have a health department job offer and will take a significant pay cut if I take it. I don't know what to do. I want the job, I think it will suit me better than med/surg nursing, but the pay cut is hard to swallow. I mean the pay is sooo low....
  15. Places to live

I live in an apartment complex in the 32822 area code. I am only a few miles from the airport. I really like it here. It's nice and quiet and conveniently located to a lot of things.
  16. public health nursing in florida

You could try to apply with the state of Florida. Go to the department of health website and you could apply online. Realize that the state pays less than the hospital, but the benefits make up for it.
  17. Orlando, FL agencies

Can someone reccomend an agency to work for on a prn basis? I would like to work one or two shifts a month. Thanks!
  18. Advice For The New Nurse Entering Med-Surg

If you don't feel right about the position, don't take it. However, don't be discouraged about the job if it is just the night shift situation. You will probably learn alot on this unit. Have a good attitude about working nights, and it will all be o...
  19. good areas to live in Orlando

Can anyone tell me where the good areas of Orlando are? I want to buy a house in a good area (not expensive). Thanks!
  20. Advice For The New Nurse Entering Med-Surg

I agree with you totally! I initially liked nursing, then hated it, now I'm fine with it and definitely feel more competent (I have been a nurse for one year). Great advice!
  21. good areas to live in Orlando

My fiance' and I are from the LA/MS area, so we are used to lower prices I guess. Right now, we can afford a max of 130k, which apparently will not go far here. We both work in the center/east part of Orlando, so we are hoping to buy a house in Orlan...
  22. Should I have chosen nursing?

Please pursue your interest in nursing. I am a fairly new RN (have only been out of school for a year) and yes, nursing does have it's downside, but if you get in it for the right reason and don't lose your focus, you will do well. I would strongly e...
  23. Nurses Who Shouldn't be Nurses

I agree...I think some people become nurses for the money and do not realize what the profession truly entails. They don't have compassion or patience, so they don't put care into their nursing.
  24. Positions of taking blood pressure in PIH patients

I would say take it with the patient laying down because sitting up make cause a rise in BP?
  25. What should I do??? New grad with 2 job offers...

Shadow at both places. Go with the job that corresponds with your long-term goals...the hospital is the best place if you plan on becoming an NP. If not, the convent job may be great.
