Let me just say I worked in a nursing home for 2 years before getting a job at the hospital. It was horrid. For me, it wasn't only how the residents were treated (by some nurses and techs, not all were bad). And I reported a LOT. Any time I reported something to my unit manager, ADON, or DON, they said they would investigate it but nothing was ever done. There were even several times that state would come and investigate it but nothing ever came out of it. At least at my facility, the supervisors generally didn't care about the well being of the residents. They claimed they did but their actions showed otherwise. I have seen nurses and techs make up vital signs, a nurse throw medicine away without offering it to the resident, a tech put a towel over a combative residents head in the shower, a tech charting dinner before the trays came out and never offered some people food. All of which I reported and very little action happened. The lat situation the tech was fired but told they would still give her a good reference. Sorry, that should be falsifying documents and neglect/abuse. But facilities don't care, they want to keep their money and keep things quiet.

I'm getting my associates in nursing and the hospital I'm working at as a CNT said that after I get my ADN I can work as an RN there and if I decide to bridge to a BSN they will pay for it if I sign a contract to stay there for X amount if years.

Right now I have 50 Shades of Grey downloaded on my phone and I am reading it. Yep. Not gonna lie. I'm addicted.

Don't get yourself too down. I have been out of high school for four years. I have only taken one semester of college courses (which I have to retake to boost my GPA. I am going back after not taking any classes for two years. It can be done. I will just graduate when I am 28. My mom graduated from her BSN program when she was 27. So it can be done. Yes, it is very hard. I am learning that myself!

Thanks for all the opinions. I am most likely going for my BSN (wish I could change my user name lol). It'll be worth it in the end, I'll spend almost as much time in school for either. Plus BSN will look better. Not to mention the money! I would rather spend the same for a bachelor's and live on campus versus getting my associate's and having to live on my own and pay bills. Thanks again :)

Where I live, places are always hiring CNAs. Whether its LTC, home health, or hospice. It may not always be glamorous but my LTC facility is so desperate for CNAs (we are ALWAYS short, every shift), they have an ad in the newspaper for new CNAs.

And I agree, if that is the worst part of the job in the past 5 months, count your blessings. I'm a CNA and I wish the worst was someone's reading material. I really do...

At least they aren't using their call light as a sex toy (yes, that has happened to me lol).

Okay so I would like opinions. I know I for sure want to be an RN but torn if I want to get my BSN or ADN. Judging by the schools in this area the only ADN school I want to attend is a private Catholic one that is 7500/ semester. They have a great reputation...but very expensive. The other 2 ADN programs have reputations for being disorganized with low NCLEX pass rates. So for the money I would spend at the private school (ADN actually ends up taking 3 years for everything), I would spend as if I went through a BSN program AND lived on campus. I just turned 23, single, no kids...just retaking my classes to boost my GPA getting my pre-req's. I would like opinions from people on either side.

The CC I'm attending has classes officially starting the 25th (Saturday) but that's for online classes. My classes start the 27th I am beyond excited to knock a few more pre-req's out!!! Good luck to everyone in the coming semester :)

I'm not in nursing school yet but I plan to continue working as a CNA until I finish. I had one friend who worked during nursing school every Sunday (6a-6p) and most Saturdays (6a-6p) until she got through nursing school and she said it was difficult but manageable. I plan to work at the hospital once I get in nursing school and get PCT training (hospital does it for free). Right now I'm in LTC.

Ughhhh oh my gosh I know!!!! Some of these CNA's that think they are nurses and a few LPN's I work with think they are doctors. Those are the absolute worst!!! Then a few nurses think they are physical therapists saying we need to walk someone down the hall who is not stable. I say unless a physical therapist tells me to do something, no. That is not their scope of practice! And about the people who think the SLP's don't know what they are talking about, that kills me! A patient at work was on nectar thickened and pureed food after they SLP did a swallow test on her. The CNA was too lazy to sit down and feed the woman. So she gave the woman a sandwich (since she actually liked them). The woman ended up aspirating because she couldn't swallow the sandwich like she was supposed to. She got sick and passed away a few weeks ago all because of it. I know it can get frustrating but that is just pure laziness! Like some people do not need to be providing care to others if they don't want to put forth the effort! Kills me!

The facility I am at I worked out for a year before. I quit and went to work at a hospital (a month into my employment at the hospital I had to have an emergency oophorectomy and couldn't work for 6-8 weeks so they "filled my position" because FMLA didn't cover me yet). After i quit the first time, I still had dreams about the facility for months. I never had nightmares though. I usually just had dreams about casually working. I used to work in retail and until a few months ago, I still would dream about the store I worked in (I haven't worked there in a year and a half).

I have been guilty of throwing stuff on the floor, I'm not gonna lie. Now I carry small trash bags and put diapers in the bags and with linens, I roll them up (clean side out) and put it on the foot of the bed until I can put it in the linen barrels. I do see quite a few people throw stuff on the floor but I also see people not use gloves the whole shift...yuck!!!

I would not suggest MA. Everyone I have known to take an MA program has not been able to find a job. They are mostly hired in doctor's offices. I am a CNA and one girl I work with went to an MA program and couldn't find a job as an MA so she is still a CNA with debt from school. Another girl couldn't get an MA job so she's working a warehouse job now. Most places want experience for MA's from what I have seen. I don't know where you live but here in TN, MA programs are the same length and cost of LPN programs.
