  1. once upon a time ,in the 60s 70s and 8os, the docs were required to wear smart troursers, shirts and white coats and carried their own stethoscopes. If I worked in a hospital now I wouldnt know them from jack.
  2. maybe a behaviour chart withthe clients responses to different approaches so interventions to her behaviour can be asessed. The trick is though when you assess her responsesand find what she responds to best is to ensure that staff adhere to this and not do their own thing.Good luck. Its a bit like a mystery novel sometimes finding out what works and can be quite satisfying when a solution is found.
  3. i agree.if more than 1approaches to test the waters some can feel quite threatened.speak calmly and soothingly if they are distressed .i can usually get them to respond and agree by introducing someone into the request that they respond to well, such as "your daughter/doctor wants us to do this for you".i always take time to explain procedures to them.as for suppositories well i always discuss "blockages" with them and usually have no problems.if they refuse i never force, never manhandle.theres nothing worse than distressed ederly with skin tears.besides then you have all the paperwork with incident reports.
  4. Do you answer dect phones while doing medication rounds? If not, why not.
  5. I received a card from a family whose relative had passed, thanking me my help kindness and compassion as it was unexpected.I keep it with me at work to remind me that people do appreciate what we do even if it isnt shown.
  6. I thank the Good Lord that I am not alone. It seems that this problem is not only where I work but is pandemic.Feel so much better knowing I am not alone and take comfort in this.
  7. Does anyone else have a problem with .subordinates who do not follow instructions and/or give misleading information.I am not confrontational by nature and desire a peaceful harmonious workplaceThere is 1 cna who has suddenly donned the mantel of rn and is disinclined to listen to instructins and is becoming quite vocal about it.Others also decide what orders they will follow.I am not the only one to have this difficulty. What do others do if they have found themselves in this position.Rns who have worked at this facility longer than I have say that they have the same problem. We have new management so am hoping the culture of the place may change.Any suggestions would be much appreciated.Thanks.
  8. Right now it's my days off
  9. Being a nun ,an archeologist,an astronomer,a paleontologist ,even just being selfsufficient on a small holding.
  10. wow! Are you 87 and still working?
  11. My last child when born was thought to maybe downs syndrome as he had what they thought was a simian crease.after tests came back he was perfectly normal.good luck and try not to worry.
  12. Thanks for the words of comfort and advice.I have always checked orders before dont know why I didnt apart from being shortstaffed and filling in for someone else as well as doing my own duties. The lady ended up getting a double dose of antibiotics. My fault in the end .I have always before this double checked what ive been told at report and this day didnt.Could really kick myself and only discovered the error when i came home and was thinking about things.Should have known better as this other girl is always leaving things undone or partly done for the next shift to complete.Oh well feel better after finally being able to get to sleep last night.Once again thanks for listening.
  13. feel really fed up with work.learnt something today .dont just believe what you are told in handover. double check doctors orders.and if its not in writing it doesnt exist. Also upset the same nurse by refusing to physically restrain a resident so that a suppository could be given.feel really upset by everything at the moment.distressed by everything.
  14. At this point in my life a resounding NO!Wish I'd had the chance to follow my dreams and made my name in the art world or better still archeology.Oh well, maybe the next time round.
  15. The book is The House Of God. I remember reading it in the eighties.Quite funny.
  16. when the girls at the salon are amazed you feel no pain at a waxing session at midday and can actually fall asleep during it.When you fly into a tirade at the local concil for waking you up at the ungodly hour of 2pm to complain about the number of rubbish bins you have out for collection-this is despite a note pinned to the door stating do not wake shift worker.all ideas of a healthy diet fly out the door and your kids live on take a ways.(my boys loved this)Your family grows up telling everyone that mum cant cook.,that your speciality was frozen tv dinners. When you are too tired to care about shaving your legs and just wear trousers or long skirts all the time.when you actually make the effort to dress up to go out and when you arrive realize you are wearing bedroom slippers and it doesnt embarress you.tell your kids that as long as they are wearing clean underwear and socks nothing else counts as long as it looks clean and smells ok.When you pay someone to do your yardwork and housework. When being single and rearing 6 kids alone and working nights all you want is a man who would make a good wife. And all you do on your nights off is want to sleep during the daytime anyway.
  17. Yes I have partial body epilepsy(temporal lobe epilepsy).Only developed a few years ago.Aetiology unknown in my case.Unable to work for a few years until diagnosed, and have been on tegretol since then.Applied for a job once my symptoms were effectively under control and was upfront about my condition. Was employed and am extremely happy with my place of employment. The staff I work with are aware of my condition and are supportive.Have had a few days off due to condition but have had no negative feedback from anyone because of this.Good luck.
  18. hello and welcome, from an aussie
  19. You"re so right about not letting it get to you.Last night was better.Things just went smoothly.Nothing was too much trouble.
  20. I am so sick of paper work. The paper trail that develops when an incident form is written is mindboggling .From progress notes to phone calls to faxes to care plans. Then there is reviewing within a certain time frame to see if issue is resolved or further adjustments are required. And so it goes.No wonder some dont report incidents.
  21. Have a resident who has decided to cease haemodialysis.Am wondering how this will impact upon him.He still voids small amounts. What should I be looking for.?I imagine he will retain a lot of fluid. That he may become disorientated,.Will this be a slow process as he dies? Will he benefit from morphine or will metabolisation of morphine be hindered.
  22. Have been giving them at the end of night shift so after handover day staff can sit them out on commode or toilet ,but some night staff are complaining about this as they feel residents may not be toileted before breakfast.Though they complain about suppositories being given at the end of afternoon shift and having to deal with the outcomes.
  23. What time of the day do you give suppositories at your facility?
