  1. Apply to my school. Being male has been nothing but a benefit!
  2. I don't know very many gay nurses or student nurses. Most men in the field are straight. The gay guys in my program will make fine nurses though.
  3. Do whatever makes you feel good! The rules at my school state that men shall not have pierced ears, but guys wear earrings without punishment. I am probably going to throw a stud or two in soon. Good luck and be happy.
  4. Exactly! Be direct, be firm and if that doesn't solve the problem utilize the chain of command. The "nail them for sexual harassment" type of thinking is pretty reactionary and infantile. If you deal with perceived adversity with maturity and professionalism, you will gain respect. It's all about respect. Recap: They disrespected you, let them know that! Don't go running to mommy, you are a NURSE!!! You are to be respected!!!
  5. The best training before nursing school had to be the route that I took. I worked in construction for 14 years as a plumber and electrician. It's almost the same job as nursing. I was a medic too.
  6. I feel for you, but the solution is simple. Organize with a quality union or resign yourself to a career of what you are experiencing right now.
  7. I am graduating in 8 months. I plan on getting involved in the Union at my first opportunity. What are you going to do to improve working conditions for nurses?

Like X 1,000,000 I can hold my breath like a........... and then trying to explain why I am panting and sucking air so hard to a coworker. Healthcare rocks!
  9. I despise rolling backpacks as much as umbrellas. Rollies help you gain thirty pounds of fat by forcing you to take the elevator. As for the umbrellas, off topic. I use a regular backpack and carry the heavy book in my hands. You can do it by studying hard!
  10. I'm 38, halfway through nursing school, was a paramedic for a year, my two cents: Nursing isn't for everyone, that is part of which makes this such an awesome career. Patient care is a privilege. Figure out how to change your attitude and situation FAST or just QUIT.
  11. If you don't like how something is going...then maybe it's YOU that needs to change!
  12. We had a "cadillac areest" one night
  13. Sorry, I guess I just know too many new grads who whine about not being able to get a job out of school. That is where I was coming from. Sorry for getting off of topic. I am a BIG proponent of volunteering! BUT...in the right setting and circumstance and if it lands you a job...you can't beat that.
  14. New grads living in part of the USA where jobs are difficult to acquire? Life isn't easy, sacrifices must be made. I was living in California and moved to Texas to go to nursing school to avoid the trap that y'all are in right now. What I have found in my travels is that there are jobs in acute care all over the country in little places called Texas, Louisiana, Alabama... I will not volunteer to do something that I should get paid good money to do. I feel that this belittles the profession. If you didn't pick up my tone, I would move to a part of the country that is hiring new nurses. I praise you for your hard work, determination and drive. I wish you the best. Yeah, Texas kinda !@#$ for me.
  15. No scrubs in the gym! Period. That's just tacky. I'd recommend some shorts and a ratty T.
