  1. I respect all nurses, because either route you go..the training is intense. Some of the best nurses I have worked with as a nurse assistant were out of the old way, the diploma schools. They don't have those around here now, but I thought that was the best way. You learned right on the floor instead of out of a book. Toledo used to have one but they recently went ADN also. Your right about ADN schools far out numbering the BSN schools. Here in Metro Detroit there are several CC's. Most have long waiting lists though. So in the long run here in Detroit, it's really not that much longer to go to get the BSN. I had started school many years ago and don't remember so many people wanting to become a nurse. Now the schools are flooded with applicants. Most are younger than me, but it seems there is a great deal of people wanting in the nursing profession. I had to tell you though that the older RN's I worked with were awesome nurses. They mostly went through the Diploma programs.
  2. I was not offended by it and alot of the RN openings at other hospitals do say BSN preffered. I don't know what area you are in and it may not be that way in your neighborhood. I live the Detroit area, lot's of hosptials here and schools. There are more CC's than Universitys also. I understood what she said. I am almost 40, been a nurse assitant for years and when I am 60, I may not be able to or want to bedside nursing. The way it looks I will be late 60's or early 70's before my age group can retire. It just opens more doors, and I figure while I am in school to go ahead and get it over with. I may not want to go back to school after getting hired on somewhere.
  3. The DMC, Detroit Medical Center and Oakwood Hospitals here in Detroit, Mich also say BSN preferred on their job postings. I talked with a nurse recruiter at one of the larger Hospitals here in Detroit and she said the BSN is the current trend now. I have no idea why. She also said anyone could go the shorter route and the hospital would pay up to 70 percent tuition assistance for the ADN nurse to get his/her BSN at a later time.
  4. I know what you mean on the length of time in school with both programs. I have a choice to start nursing classes in Jan. of 06 at the CC, I also have been accepted to a univeristy this fall of 05. I could graduate from the CC in Dec. 2007, I could graduate from the four year university in May of 2008. There is only one semester difference between the two degrees. If I went one extra semester I would have my BSN. It makes more sense to me to obtain that four year degree. I am like you, I am going to turn 40 in September, I don't want to go back to school after I start working, I would rather have it over with also. Unless I want to pursue my Masters later on. It is not that much longer of a program to finish your BSN rather your ADN. At least that has been what I have found. As for money, I will have to take out loans I am sure, so far been receiving a grant. That is okay though. Most people do end up taking out loans to get their Bachelor's. You would probably have to do that if you got your ADN first and starting working, then went back to school for your BSN. I sometimes think the old saying is true, you get what you pay for.
  5. I agree with you. I am almost 40, have had 15 years experience as a nurse assistant and I know what I am getting into. There is one fact, the more educated you are, the better the jobs become. I have never heard it is better to only obtain your two year degree than anything further. That is absurd. Some people just want to get their nursing degree the quickest and cheapest way possible. That is fine for them. I even read one post from Fun2care that everyone should have to get their ADN first. That is ridiculous! There is no crime in wanting to at least get your BSN. Nor is there a crime in getting the two year degree. School is hard, and expensive. Each person makes their own road.
  6. I have never heard a four year student complain about someone getting their two year degree ever. It seems like the ones who argue about which one is better are the two year degree students. I personally think you ought to just do what you can afford to do, and don't worry about anyone else or their input. It's your time and money, no one elses. I am in a CC myself and applied to Eastern Michigan U, and was accepted. I am almost complete with my pre req's for the CC's nursing program. After the summer I could apply for the Winter semester nursing classes. However, I found there is a scholarship for transfer students, there is also a grant from the state of Michigan and my financial aid package. The univeristy is affordable and obtainable. That is my personal choice and I am the one who lives with that decision, no one else. So good luck in whatever you choose. People probably say that to you because you already hold a Bachelor's degree. I am excited about attending the University. It something I have always wanted to do and could not until now. I will be 40 in Sept., so to me it is a great accomplishment. Just stay focused on your goals and your studies. You are the only one who has to live with your own decisions. I am sure you will succeed in either program.
  7. Spores are the hardest to destroy. I would have put fungi spores as second to Bacteria spores.
  8. Why not try asking the teacher himself/herself about it? Hearsay is just that, I would ask the professor myself.
  9. Well don't fret, I am sure you did well. I can tell you one thing, I don't miss Kitakis at all. I think he enjoys making those tests as hard as possible. We did not test on the heart yet. We will be doing that on the next exam. We simply tested on the WBC's, RBC's, anomalies of the blood and platelet disorders, immunology and anomalies of the immune system. Let us know what you got today. I am sure you did well.
  10. High fives to you Boonersmom, keep up the excellent work!! :balloons: :Melody:
  11. Thanks and I am sure you will ace your test also, you always do. So early Congrats to you. Yes my professor is pretty good, but I have way more time to study this time around, with just the two classes. Things are more relaxed this semester. I like the content of A & P II better also. It is more interesting and seems to be more on the Physiology side of things. We are on cardiovascular systems now. Should have another test coming up soon, because we were supposed to test last week and he forgot to bring the test. That puts us a week behind schedule. Good luck to everyone and congrats on all the hard work and good grades.
  12. I agree the DMC is awesome, however I was considering going to school at Wayne State U and my professors at Wayne County Community College advised me not to. They all went to graduate school there and said people were robbed, mugged, carjacked etc. right on campus and even in some cases right in the schools hallways. That was scary to me.
  13. thank you!! i was so happy to get it. :balloons:
  14. We had to take General Bio first, it was a great class. It covers a little bit of everything in it and it was actually harder than the other Bio classes afterwards. There was even chemistry in it. In our school you must take it if you have not had it completed in the last 5 years.
  15. I did my classes like that, Micro and A & P I together, plus two more classes. I would not recommend anyone do it that way, unless they absolutely have too. It was a very heavy load, and I was not able to give either class 100 percent. I did get decent grades in all classes, but the Micro grade wasn't as high as I had hoped. It helps to have a good instructor with those classes also. They do require alot of time. Good luck!
  16. It helps if you think that it is just another phase of life. We will all look like that at the end of the journey. The only thing that ever really made me queasy was the smell of a GI bleed or suctioning out mucous. No matter what that always made me gag and the smell of the GI bleed in a bm, is something you never forget. You will probably get over it the more you see it.
  17. 5 ml = 1 teaspoon
  18. Congrats on your good grade too, keep it up!! I also agree on liking the A and P II far much better than A and P I. My teacher is great and he is very knowledgable on Hematology and Toxicology. It kind of relates to the blood, immune system we are covering. I am back to studying, test in 5 days coming up.
  19. Well our first exam is going to be next week. The teacher said maybe on Tuesday, but more than likely on Thursday. He lets us go home after taking the test. He said he knows the students are tired after testing and no use in lecturing afterwards. So I am prepared with the info he has given us so far. Today wasn't so bad, we had two breaks and left at 12:45 instead of 2. We are already a week ahead of the syllabus with the lecturing. He said we might finish early, and for sure our last day is August 11th. Well hope everyone else is doing good in their classes. Seems everyone must be real busy studying, not too many replies lately on here. I also have an online English class which is awesome. I love it. It is our second required english class and based on short stories and essay writing. We must also participate in the online discussion board with other students after we read a story. It is very awesome.
  20. Just wanted to say....Ugh....I have to take this class next semester and it doesn't sound pretty. I like the jingle though, that is an easy way to remember it.
  21. email your number again please, cannot find it in mail.
  22. I ended up with a Dr. Seyed Moosavi as my professor. I really like him. He specialized in Toxicology in his career before teaching at WCCCD. He gives us info on how polluted Michigan is, he calls it the Cancer state and advises us to move somewhere else. He said our water is extremely contaminated with Lead and Mercury. He really knows his material with our class and he is very soft spoken and layed back. He is a good teacher. We have an exam coming up soon. He said like every two weeks we will be testing. Glad your medical math class is going well. In my medical math there were four ways shown to problem solve and you picked out the formula that was most comfortable for you. I preferred the Dosage Formula, there were also the DQA Formula, DHQ Formula and Label Proportion Formula. You will really enjoy the class, it is interesting. I have also sent in all required paperwork and application to the University of Detroit Mercy, they replied back on my prerequisites. I need the Organic Chem class, BioChem class and one Algebra class finished, then I would be eligible to apply to the Macauley School of Nursing. I am hoping to transfer this fall if all goes well, but I am keeping WCCCD open as an avenue also. I also have to go to UDM to do the NET exam, they have it every Friday morning at 9. You must score at least a 65 on it. How hard is this exam?? just thinking of it makes me nervous, but I did score an A in Medical math, so I should not be so uneasy about taking this test. Well off to study my material for A and P II, that test is right around the corner.
  23. Well I was wrong, we are also doing the blood first. Endocrine is last chapter to cover. My professor seems great, he explains things in very simple terms, almost at a Kindergarten level, but that is okay, better than the opposite. We had a long class today 9 to 2 with only a 10 minute break. It seemed like a long day, Thursdays class is from 12 to 2:30, so not bad at all. He said we will be wrapping up our final exam on August 11th. I think it will fly by. I also started my English 120 online and that sounds like a fun class. Lot's of reading and writing. Today we covered RBC's, WBC's, Platelets and some diseases. Long day today, but interesting.
