  1. I was a CNA for 7 yrs before getting my RN. I was traveling and right at shift change a pt who hadn't poop for 6 days finally (lactulose every 2 hours) started. The CNA called and I said I would be there after report. She said its all over the bed and the floor. I said as soon as report was over I'll be there. When I showed up she started crying. She didn't think I would show up. Of course the oncoming nurse/CNA didn't help. We also had a RN who would give a CNA a task if she was sitting. I know how busy they are so if they get a moment to sit they should be able to.
  2. When I was hired to Telemetry I had certain classes to take and had 6 months for the ACLS. I later got certified by my own choice. If you are not happy you should leave. Why not get certified if that's your specialty. As a traveler I floated to Oncology many times and they had me giving chemo. Other places I was not allowed because I was not certified. I have an office job now and happy I am not on the floor anymore.
  3. Missed a entire week. To correct frequency how do I write an order to not have a visit that week
  4. How do you call and do it "Stealth"? Most managers don't even answer the phone in my experience. I know they are busy and like I said I have never received a call back. Ty
  5. He did ask if I wanted to extend but when I said no he asked where I wanted to go. I replied I was looking for a staff job and he said to let him know if I was interested in traveling again.
  6. was with then for a year. They only offer me Kaiser which I did and regretted it. Also my recruiter set me up with a non Kaiser hospital and Cross Country was the in between. Lower my pay by 200.00 after I accepted stating only med-surg so not tele so the lower pay. Then once I got there and they wanted to float me to tele I notified the company (I am a tele nurse) that tele pt were on the med-surg floor and I will be floating so my pay should go back to the original. They actually notified the hospital I could not float! So everyone questioned me and were not happy about it. I was embarrassed. Last assignment with them and refused to work with cross country when they showed up to the hospital to see if I wanted an assignment with them.
  7. I have been asked to call the managers myself. I did this twice and never got the job. So today my recruiter asks me to call the manager but be "stealth" about it. Told her no that I didn't like doing it. Has anybody done this and had a good outcome?
  8. The hospital I am traveling at gave staff nurses a bag with a pen, candy and phone charger. Nothing as usual for the travelers and contract staff. My company nothing not even a Thank You.
  9. I have worked with prisoners in the hospital and while some are disrespectful they are not anything like regular patients these days. Pts and their families are so difficult these days I want to leave the hospital after 14 yrs.
  10. Sounds like my last staff job. I left on my own after I started traveling but she was doing her best to fire me. My "friends" coworkers avoided me because she threatened them. It hurt me at the time but she was let go a few months later. Most of my coworkers found other jobs. I thought I could stand up to her and change things but now I know to keep my mouth shut at work and do my job then go home.

Not sure about Oakland but the San Fran area is great. I stayed in Hercules and it was okay. I wish I liked my contract better so I could have stayed. I might go back to a different hospital.

What didnt I like about the assignment? besides making 1/2 of what staff was making? They just started to do 8 hr shifts and no one wanted the PM shift so they hired a few travelers and 10 new grads who didnt have a clue about Telemetry. 2 charge nurses that were well know for doing nothing except give you admits. It didnt matter how behind you were, you hadnt had a break by 10 pm, new nurses needed help, they didnt do anything except for telling you how busy they were doing charge nurse stuff. The monitor tech and unit secretary did the assignments, spent most of the shift with personal calls taking hour breaks to spend time on the internet, and leaving to do errands and covered for each other but if they couldnt find a nurse right away called and reported it to the supervisor. One refused to put in orders although she was the uinit secretary for the shift because she didnt feel like working. The thing the staff will tell you "they dont fire you untill you kill 3 people". No CNA's except for sitters and then they only sat. The manager didnt care about anything and you never saw her except when state was there investigating which was 6 times in my 3 months. One nurse had a death in the family and left several messages for the manager and she never returned any call about needing time off or just to touch base with her. Pharmacy closed at 9 and when you asked the supervisor to go to ER for a med that was missing you were told "day shift can take care of it". The last thing that happened before I was finished is a pt I admitted after falling at home and stayed on the floor 2 days till a neighbor found him, had abrasions all on the left side but nothing on his back side. He developed a wound on his bottom and another traveler was called into see the manager because they were positive he had it when he came in and the admit papers and the next 4 days that we took care of him were missing. The state was investigating it and they wanted us to redo the charting to show it. of course we refused. Honestly how can 4 days of charting go missing. They were several on the night shift that were verbally abusive to other staff and no one cares. In 4 yr of traveling that was my worst assignment.

I asked my PCP and my insurance did pay for them.
  15. LOL, no except maybe he had renal issues. I have seen 3 times a week after dialysis but, can't recall once a week.
  16. Pharmacist can and do write orders. I see less than yrs ago but Dr will ask them to order antibiotics per protecol depending on labs. They also order labs when the Dr misses it.
  17. Lesson to learn from. I doubt you will lose your license. The manager should speak to you and suggest how it can be prevented next time. It doesnt matter if others were at fault because you had an unsigned MAR and you didnt do the 24hr check. Both should have been done. The RN needed to be called in am to see if it was given. This is a common mistake so don't be so hard on your self. Please do the 24hr checks because they find lots of mistakes.
  18. 2nd born, both parents ETOH, Mother RN was 3rd daughter and neither parent alcoholic
  19. I was a volunteer in high school at the county hospital, a CNA for 7 yrs and now an RN for 14 yrs. I absolutely would pay anyone to do VS and FS. Hate doing them. Now we have to do our own. What ticks me off is to have a manager go into a room where my pt is perfectly happy and bother them enough so they FINALLY have a complaint.
  20. I can't even figure out how to respond to you. Do you know anyone who has been molested? I do, me. In fact my oldest sister was molested by my father, she inturn molested our 3 brothers, yrs later my mother remarried and my stepfather molester my youngest sister and my stepbrother molester my sister and I. This is very painful to anyone who has been in this situation. I just don't know why you would sterotype male nurses with it. It was not a nurse, coach, babysitter or friend in my situation it was family, both male and female. My brothers were not teenagers and I know it is not rare that women molest too. You can't walk down the street and pick them out of the crowd. You really should know what you are talking about before you post something like this. If you had put Molest in the topic line I would have never read this. I am very fond of my male coworkers, they don't deserve to be labeled like this.
  21. I took the PBDS 2 yrs ago. I wasn't told before. Once we were in orientation they told us right before we had to take it. I passed. Just follow their suggestions. Look up other threads on it and study a little.
  22. Have always seen every 8 hrs x 3. If pt c/o cp again they order the same, sometimes the orders cross each other. Last few places I worked (I'm a traveler) I have seen every 6 x 3.
  23. Like above posters said. give 2 weeks notice and do not burn bridges. Even though you might be sure you will never see these people again you will. If not the same people, ones who have a friend that worked with you.
  24. I am in Ca and on their site it looks like they dont have any openings right now, so I might just fill it out and wait. Thanks for your replies.
  25. So you watch them during the tour and what would make you not hire them. I am asking because Years ago I interviewed for a home health position and I had to ride a bike for 25 min and keep my pulse under a certain number, that I passed. Then I had to lift a weight bar to prove I could lift a body if needed, passed that too. I failed on the next test where they had me pick up a box from the ground using correct posture carry it and place it on a table, then go back and place it on the ground and add 5 lb each time. he first told me I was getting sloppy with placing the box on the ground and picking it up. After many trips I asked how much wt I needed he said he would let me know and to just keep going and he wanted me to go faster because I was slowing down. Then all of a sudden he stopped me and said you were too slow so I failed. I was still hired because the manger fought for me but I dont want to go through this again not prepared.
