  1. California is a mess! Plan on everything taking wayyyyy longer than you expected. It's been this way for awhile now. Just to be "safe" I would budget about 2-3 month delay on paperwork.
  2. Wow! Our school is not organized at ALL. I really try my best to keep everything in order in case of emergencies, but honestly it's the coaches/teachers who panic and call 911, before I have even had to chance to check anything out. 911 should only be used for life-threating emergencies, not because a kid has a "COUGH" or looks pale . The RN has told me she is only paid to train glucose/Epi-pen to staff who volunteer and that's all she wants to do. Admin is new this year, and feels everything runs great.
  3. I am signed up with an agency to try out Correctional Nursing in my summer off time. I too, am tired of making way below what my friends are making in the "real "world.
  4. I go total technical talk... MY license from the state of California doesnt not allow me to diagnose only treat. You as the parent are responsible in determining medical needs. Yeah I get alot of "then what are good are you"- (what are you there for) type snarky responses but at the end of the day, im sorry it's my license and im the only one who will protect it.
  5. Yeah I just think they are throwing the nursing net out there to see what they catch! But I swear it seems like more and more employers are doing it.
  6. I've noticed more and more job postings asking for RN or LVN for the same position. I was upset when I applied for a job like that recently, only to be told basically I was not qualified. I just don't understand why employers are lumping RN and LVN positions together if they only truly want an RN.
  7. Hi everyone just an update if you can call it that! My boss the principle just casually says on Friday at 3:45pm, (4:00pm we leave) that he will be meeting with the SPED director to go over it. That's it, nothing more
  8. I actually broke out in Hives on my chest for being so upset with the rude behavior of the Aide and the teacher hanging up on me. Yes, I do believe the teacher sends the kids home because she doesn't want to deal with it. I had 2 more of her kids come up that morning before she tried to send this student. Yes again on the down syndrome students. Parent told me, the student has thick mucus and she will gag/spit it up. Teacher would not take that as an answer, and told me the student vomited everywhere and needed to go home. Aide told me she had mucus come up only, and no actual vomit. Just really sad
  9. Just a little backround to the story- They took students temp in their classroom was 99.5. Our policy is 100.4. I took temp- 98.9/99.3 I take temps on both temples and middle forehead for best results. Normal temp, Aide freaked out and said I don't care he is sick needs to go home. I called dad, he said if no fever he was not picking him up. CASE closed...NOPE! Aide grabs my temp gauge and takes his temp right there and then when im on the phone to dad RUDE- and says he has a temp NOW! I took it again, and again it was 99.5, still not 100.4. Dad agrees to let me recheck temp again in 30 mins just to appease all parties, way more than fair I believe. I rechecked in 15 minutes cause it was lunch time, and again Normal 98.6/98.3 temp. I called to speced room for someone to get student, and teacher goes full on crazy- tells me she's sending an email and HANGS UP ON ME
  10. I will try to make this short... In a nut shell, Special ED director sent me an email asking that the Special ED teacher, be able to send her special needs students home without question. SpecED teacher was annoyed at my assessment of NO fever, and annoyed I called parent to say child had No fever. She wants all ability to override me, but GET THIS- they still want the students to come to the health office, and ME to call parent for child to go home without me even looking/assessing anything! I pulled rank, and said NOT Gonna Happen. Waiting on my supervisor/Principle to comment on email.
  11. I have the opposite effect at my school. All the crazies like talking with me, and I spend alot of time on the phone listening to everything going on at home. All the staff members ask me if I can call home cause no one wants to talk with the parents.
  12. I am usually the first go to person at school, but recently Ive noticed the LVN who teaches CNA classes has been up front more often. I don't mind if she's helping, but today she asked me for Sterile water to flush out a staff members finger. I gave it to her, but I was a little upset that she would come into my Health Office and ask for my supplies to use on a co-worker. Kinda mad to that I wasn't asked to fix my co-workers finger...
  13. You could always try your hand at school Nursing. You basically have the same schedule as a teacher M-F and weekends, holidays, and summers off. It will be less money, but if you are trying to become a teacher, you will make less money anyways. It's a way to get into the school system and really see what everything is about. California is desperate for School nurses, so you might be able to get a job ASAP. Good luck with whatever you choose
  14. My question is regarding the above titles- What difference if any are there between the two? I am located in California if that makes a difference. RN started out as Credentialed School Nurse, but has since signed a contract and says she is only allowed to do 504's, IEP's and screenings.
  15. I was able to take IV CERT course without having my actual license yet. I just provided my graduation/school transcripts.
  16. I have been an LVN for over 4 years. I was very lucky to land as my first job, working at a school health office. I've learned a couple things these past years. I make alot on paper, $28/hr but in reality with everything taken out, my pay is more like $20/hr. I am bored in my job at times, but who else works (8-4pm M-F) holidays and summers OFF! So you take the good with the bad. Do I dream about going back to school for my RN, YES! I am taking classes online so I can apply to the program eventually. I have no problem saying I am a NURSE. And if if I get asked about my RN, I have no problem saying, yeah you going to pay for it for me...
  17. I entered the program after working for 2 years also. I had never heard about it, and when my old College HEALD" went out of business I began researching my loans more and stumbled on this. https://allnurses.com/member-863899/ please let me know what you find out about the client who is finished with the process. Thanks
  18. I work in a low-income eligible school for Student Loan Forgiveness. I have about $50,000 total, but am only getting maybe $25,000 of that covered by the program. I've been enrolled for 3 years, and the paperwork was easy, no hassle. Im in California, which is known for starting programs, and then quickly running out of money. Im hopeful that it stays around another 7 years, but honestly I am not paying anything on the loans, so really this won't hurt me either way.
  19. I talk with my co-worker who is a counselor. She brings a new light to me when I complain. She explained it to me... If you were the teacher and had an annoying kid distrupting the class, wouldn't you want them out asap. I get it. I do my due diligence, Check temp, ask questions, maybe let them rest a bit. Is it annoying to me, YES, but maybe it's better to have them sit with me for 5 minutes so the teacher can calm down or whatever. Also 9/10 times the kids will be sent up from another teacher, and I can happily say, "Ive already assessed them, go back to class".
  20. I mostly get asked- What RASH is this from? I work in the mountains, so who knows what bugs/spiders/bee/snakes or other outside creatures gave you that!

I will look or assist my co-workers/teachers if they need help, but we have a hotline like you for staff to call if they have gotten hurt on the JOB. My job is taking care of student's needs.
  22. School LVN, 1st and only job as a nurse
  23. I had an interview about a year ago, and it was very eye-opening for me. There were 2 people doing the interview, and they had a paper taped to the table in front of me, asking multiple questions regarding scenarios. Each one was very difficult to answer for me, mostly because I did not have hospital experience, or they seemed more like RN functions vs LVN. In the end, I think my chances went down to zero, because I could not work per diem shift at a moments notice like they wanted me to. They sounded like they were looking for someone who was available 24/7 if someone called in sick, and like most people I needed FULL-time work.
  24. These 2 things are my petpeeves! 1- keys situation ( All AD-min and office staff) 2- bathroom in my office (EVERY ONE) I used to have the learning director surprise me every morning when I wen't to unlock my office door. She would sometimes just be standing in my office... Creepy! 2- My bathroom really should be for sick kids, but I have the boys coming up when they vandalise the outside bathroom, and need somewhere to go.

Just started back to work yesterday, after being sick all last week. The front desk (secretary) DID NOT log anything. She simply was to busy and it just slipped her mind. Thankfully the school I work for is pretty small, and not alot happens, but I guess it will just go down as not happening?
