I am relocating to Kansas City from Wichita in the next few months. I am wondering if anyone can tell me what kind of shift diff Shawnee Mission Medical Center and KU Med Center pays? I have talked to St. Lukes and they have a flat rate versus a percentage. I am waiting to hear back from SMMC and KUMC. Also, any other helpful information about either facility would be appreciated. Does either facility offer domestic partner benefits? thanks, Fleasle

After another horrendous weekend, I am about to be done with my current Med Surg job. I am currently looking around for other opportunities in the Wichita area, and I am wondering if there are any facilities where it isn't grueling day in and day out? I do not really want to work for a Dr's office, but I am pretty much open to anything. For those of you who work at Wesley, what are conditions like there? Kansas Medical Center? :sofahider Thanks! While I have worked with students of both WSU and Butler, as well as Newman, I would have to disagree and say it certainly depends on the student as to whom is the most prepared. I currently work with recent WSU grads that are not nearly as sharp as some community college grads. I think it depends on the person and how much time they invest in being prepared for clinicals and class, as well as their maturity level. One difference that seems to be prevalent is the age range that is attracted to each program. WSU seems to have younger, closer out of high school than Butler which has more non-traditional students in their late 20's, 30's, even 60's. While no one school is better than the other, it simply depends on how many hours you can take, how much you want to spend, and if getting a BSN is in your future, do you want it now or can you wait.

I went to Butler and worked about 30 hrs a week with no problem. However, I do not have any children. I work with some WSU nurse techs and they are able to work 48-72 hrs a wk, so it probably has a lot to do with what your life exists of outside of work and school as to how much you can handle. I am partial to Butler. They have an excellent program, the instructors are fantastic, and I opted that route so that Via Christi could pay for my BSN. I am getting ready to start KU's online RN-BSN program next semester. Good luck.

Hi all, I am a relatively new nurse and had never considered mixing IV meds together before administration. This was never something that came up in school, nor something I ever saw during clinicals. However, several nurses on my floor regularly do this and I wanted to see if most people do or do not. When I say mixing IV meds I mean to put, for example, Morphine and Reglan together in the syringe and then giving it to the patient. If you do practice this, I am wondering....You only mix if the IV book says they are compatible in the SYRINGE, not Y site, correct? Also, do you go by the slowest push rate of the two? :monkeydance: Thanks, Flea

I went to Butler. I am now finishing my Bachelor's through an online RN-BSN program.

What school are you going to? Of course, all schools differ in their curriculum and clinicals etc. I can say to be prepared for lots of reading, lots of studying, and lots of time management needed. Your clinical workups can take 6-8 hours or more on the day before clinicals, that is something I was not prepared for. They do get easier the more that you do, but they do take up a lot of time. I worked nearly full time while I was in school (no kids), but it was doable. Just don't look to get too much sleep for the next few.

I, too, will be starting as a new grad on a transplant floor. I vote yes to a transplant forum.

Hello all ! I will be graduating in May and, so far, the positions I have interviewed for have been for the 7p-7a shift (which is what I want to work anyway). During clinicals, we have only done day shift rotations and, therefore, I have no idea what to expect from this 7p-7a shift. As a new grad, it seems like I would be missing out on A LOT of meds, dressing changes, procedures, etc because the majority of the time the patient will be sleeping? I am curious from those of you that have worked both shifts, do I have any reason to worry? And, what sort of things do you do on this shift. Thanks In Advance, Flea

Does anyone know of a reference, like a laminated card of some sort, that lists the most common IV push meds with dosages and push rates? I have searched the web, but I haven't been able to locate such a thing. Thanks! Fleasle

Problems with grains can be used with dimensional analysis. 1 grain = 60 mg. We were told that 60 mg is the standard conversion factor used, although, it is really like 59.66666 or something.

Hi everyone! I am sorry if this is a repeat topic, I searched but could not locate any threads on this. Anyway, after taking CPR today, I got to thinking...how often do nurses actually administer CPR? Have you ever had to do it? Were you freaked out? Did it work? I am a 3rd semester nursing student and still freaked about most things, codes being at the top of the list. Just curious about your experience. Thanks, Flea

Yes, they can ask for bank statements and some schools do. I could not locate my school's online form, but I found one at another school that specifically says to attach a bank statement and have a bank employee verify your average daily balance. The website for this form is http://web.odu.edu/af/finaid/quality_assurance/depend.pdf scroll to page 9. In this case it is for verification of a parent's income, but some require independent students to submit the same info. Anyway, it is not being gullible to do what you are asked to do to receive FREE money from the government or attain a loan, it is called being honest. True, student loans are not a mortgage, but they are a loan nonetheless.

At my school they randomly pick students each semester who have to go through a verification system. I have been picked twice in 2 years. Anyway, you have to prove all of the info put in the FAFSA, which included BANK statements, W-2, paycheck stubs, etc. So, if you have it in the bank, I would sure put it down. I had over $5,000 in savings (which I put on the FAFSA) and I still got a Pell Grant, not much, but I got one. The savings won't disqualify you from getting financial aid, but it will probably diminish any FREE money you would get as it contributes to your Estimated Family Contribution. Flea

Hi all, I am a student and our class is having a debate (awaiting clarification from instructor) as to what exactly para is. Specifically...if there is a primigravida who is due any day now (obviously beyond the 20 weeks) is she a para 1 yet or not until after she delivers? In other words, does para only indicate delivery or any pregnancy beyond 20 weeks? I would appreciate any help from you seasoned OB nurses. We have two textbooks that both are vague in description and do not address the current pregnancy. Thanks!

Also, for clinincals we have to do patient work-ups or "preconference guides" and they can literally take 6-8 hours depending on the patient. For me, one day a week was devoted to preconference guides in addition to the rest of the courseload.
