  1. Your story sounds so similar. I'm having to pay for my nursing on my own now. I went to school and got a BS in Management and realized it wasn't what I wanted to do. I got into a nursing program and got my LPN but now am maxed out on student loans so I can't finish my RN. I need less than 5k to finish so right now I'm doing my pre-req's online that I didn't get when I was in my management program (anatomy, Micro and psychology) I'm working as a psych nurse and just picked up a PRN job at the methadone clinic so all that money will be going towards paying for school. I'm bound and determined to get my RN and I know it's going slow, but I keep telling myself a step ahead is still a step ahead. Like you I want to be a travel nurse and found LPN travel jobs where I could make more money and save faster but my fear is that I'd stop working on my studies like I should. I've even found myself thinking of selling my house and moving back to my parents which is 8 hours away from here so I could finish my RN. Your post has given me motivation and I also follow a group of traveling nurses who don't always know it but they motivate me to study because I see them doing what I can't wait to do. Good luck to you!
  2. That pretty much sums up my experience in LTC/Rehab. There were times it took me from 6p to midnight to do my med pass depending on my pts. I usually had at minimum 17 and that was if I was on the respiratory hall with the trach's...Q4 breathing tx, trach care, suctioning Q2. We didn't have a supervisor at night and most of the time didn't even have an RN on duty. And people wonder why the turnover is so high. I'm now working in psych and I absolutely love it! It's definitely a different world in both pt care and how things are being done. I sure don't feel like my license is on the line every day I work and that alone is worth it's weight in gold.
  3. Working on my pre-req's now. Just need 4 more and I can start the nursing classes in the LPN to RN bridge.
  4. I haven't lost a job but a friend of mine did and he had no trouble finding a new job. I can't imagine there's a nurse out there that hasn't made a med error.
  5. I think that's too much detail. I'd put discharged and if they ask say I made a medication error and here's what I learned from it...It admits accountability for the error but that you're willing to learn from it.
  6. I'm using Khan Academy to study for the math. Seems like I've forgotten a lot of math since the last time I was in school. They have videos and practice problems to do on the site.
  7. Dansko just came out with a tennis shoe looking shoe and while they aren't exactly the most awesome looking shoe their shoes are always comfortable and they do have an all white leather one.
  8. I had a similar situation happen to me like that. It turns out state was in the building and they didn't want orientee's running around while they were in the middle of their survey. I'd call and clarify for sure.
  9. Nice to see other Christian nurses!
  10. I have a horrible time sleeping in the day so second shift is great for me. I can sleep in and sleep at night. I did third shift at an MR facility and pretty much spent my day sleeping or trying to sleep. Now I work 3-11 and usually get up early enough to study before work and do any errands I need to do before work as well. I like that the patients are still up and we can be pretty busy with admissions and pt's acting out but for the most part it's busy without being extremely busy. I feel like I have enough time to get everything done and still interact with my patients.
  11. I'm at a state hospital so we get a lot of MIW's, 72 hour holds, people who have charges and need to be stable before going back to jail etc.
  12. I'm going to Ivy Tech in Sellersburg. It's a lot cheaper. I have a couple coworkers who are going to Galen and are either working weekends only. My plan for Ivy Tech is to work doubles on weekends and figure out one more night shift I can work but I work 8 hour shifts at my job. I'm also single so I have to work and can't rely on cutting my hours back. JCC has an online program and the regular nursing program but IT is closer for me and I seemed to get a better response from the faculty than I did at JCC.
  13. I work at a state psych facility and most of our patients don't have anything med/surg related. We might do some bandaging to wounds from whatever brought them in but that's about the extent of it. I will say I absolutely love my job there and actually enjoy going to work most days. There are rough days but they come fewer and farther between for me than they did when I was working in other places.
  14. I work in psych and I absolutely love it. I loved it in clinicals and am now working at the facility I did clinicals at. There's never a dull moment and each patient is different. To me it's fun and rewarding to figure out exactly how to deal with them and their illness.
  15. I went to Galen for my lpn and am going for my rn now. I'm not going to Galen mostly for the cost but also because I couldn't get a schedule that would work for me. I know people who have done it working 12's here in the Louisville area but I'm not sure how!
