Compassionate Combat
I initially posted my comments to back up a vet (another nurse) who was speaking truth to their experiences and in return for their honesty was condescended to and accused of being a war criminal (?!l) Since 2001 114,000 vets have taken their own life. Lets not encourage one more by being complete dicks. Instead, how 'bout we ask our leaders how covid happened in the 1st place. But that is not part of the leftist talking points allowed, so lets talk about gun violence instead? Peace out.

Compassionate Combat
I realize that you may not know since what the military does is "irrelevant" to american life...an army brat is servicemember's kid. I not a vet, just a nurse with some perspective

Compassionate Combat
Last year WAS tough for a lot of people but I never had the taliban shoooting at me while I was starting an IV and I didn't have to worry about setting off an IED on the way home from work. 2021 was the first time many americans had to deal with the uncertainty that many in the world feel everyday of their lives. But hey were getting a ticker tape parade in new york city next month so yay for us?!

3600 died out of 14.7 million healthcare workers. So yes I think my covid experience was statistically representative.

Compassionate Combat
Proud Army Brat here who worked on a covid unit through the surge. I showed up to work, got paid well and did my job. I went home at the end of 12 hrs to my family, a warm dry bed, anything for dinner I wanted and only had to do this 2-3 times a week. Doesnt sound anywhere ***** close to combat guys. Vets do the hard *** that allow us to live our soft, free, comfortable lives and as the BS from this last year has shown, most americans are not worthy of their protection.

Influenza and COVID-19: The Twindemic
I have no choice but to get a flu shot or join the unemployment line but probably many more people will actively choose to get flu shots his year. With widespread mask wearing and social distancing requirements I view the 2020-2021 flu season as a proxy for the effectiveness of Covid prevention measures since both diseases spread in a similar fashion. If rates of flu infection are significantly down from previous years then we know that the social distancing, mask wearing etc was probably worth the disruption to people's jobs, schooling, businesses etc. If flu rates are similar or only slightly down then we know that countries like Sweden which did not quarantine and shutdown the economy responded wisely.?

Detroit ED Nurses refuse to work without more help, ordered to leave by Administration
worked for a tenet hospital in an poor black neighborhood @10 yrs ago- came on shift to step down unit and had 2 staff nurses to care for 12 patients....no tech, unit sec, charge nurse...just 2 RN's! Left that job asap but learned valuable lesson; admin will work you as hard as they can get away with and will sleep like babies at night. Because of all the $$$ lost from elective procedures I expect hospitals will do more of this kind of thing in the future to make up for lost revenue-mutiple hospital facilities have even made their employees take a pay cut- in a Pandemic!

Why hasn’t pay increased? Hazard pay, etc.?
An increase in pay would ease the minds of many nurses working without proper ppe whose work sponsored healthplans include copays as large as $3000 person $6000 a family! If we are expected to give care unprotected perhaps our hospitals could provide a bonus to cover our copay if we do get sick. As it is now the hospitals stand to benefit if we do get ill as most plans require workers to receive care from the hospital system they work in and most nurses will actually pay the bills they owe!

Does your specialty fit your personality?/Why did you choose your specialty?
As another fellow artist (i'm a painter and musician) nursing can be great to provide for oneself economically to pursue one's art without compromise. Working 2-3 days per week and making 40-50K a year is great and allows me to experiment and let my work meander where it wants to go. In my experience the field of nursing tends to be very conservative and you may have a hard time fitting in at work if you have a bohemian lifestyle/worldview. I find that the most creative types work in ER (for the excitement and fascinating social experiences) psych and sometimes in med/surg because the area has a large proportion of newer (young) nurses who may be more tolerant to non-traditional lifestyles. Nursing can be completely psychologically overwhelming sometimes and is difficult if you are the sensitive emotional type. I would suggest having a shadow experience with an rn to see if the field is really something you can get into before you sacrifice money/time on nursing school. Good luck!
