- It's a Myth that it takes thousands of dollars to train a new Grad RN

Guys, do you take this personally?
A patient demanding to not have a male nurse is discrimination. Any way you look at it, it is discrimination. That being said, I do not take offense to a female pt wanting a female nurse. People would think differently if a male pt demanded to have a female nurse. Discrimination is discrimination no matter how you frame it.

Should I tell nursing school I have a hearing loss?
Honesty. Tell them. They want to know. If your hearing loss causes you any problems later they will be less likely to be lenient. Tell them up front.

Vent thread "universal" health care
Everyone deserves some sort of coverage. It is not the role of Government to provide that coverage. Everyone should have to sacrifice a little to provide this coverage for themselves. The Government should only help out those who truly need help. It is too easy for people to get on the Government teet. Millions of people say they cant' afford coverage for themselves or their families and make more money than me. They drive nicer cars than me. They have nicer clothes than me. They carry a nicer purse than my wife. It is reprehensible. Where is the personal responsibility?

How likely is it to get laid off?
I am sure there are examples of companies or hospitals having lay-offs and having to let go people who were good employees. However, for the most part, if someone is losing their job they should have some careful introspection. I understand that people sometimes lose their jobs for trivial reasons. I feel as if I will not lose my job, and also that if I did, I would find one quickly. I guess I'm just more confident in my own value than your average roser.

When will they change the name???
We should change it to night-ranger

Question for the fellas....
I would think that males have a pretty good advantage. There is much less drama than with females. Much less absenteeism. More honest work. I am going to write a book when I retire about having to spend a career in a female dominated profession. It will be hilarious.

How likely is it to get laid off?
A RN should not "worry" about being laid off. There will always be lay off's. Not all companies and hospitals always perform well. It should not be difficult for an experienced RN to find a job if they were to find themselves laid off. It might not be a dept or a shift you prefer. Nurses, at times, have become too picky. I have met a lot of nurses who feel entitled to this or that. We are not entitled to anything. Nursing offers more job security than almost any other profession. It is an individuals resposiblity to make themselves indispensable to their employer. Also, there are goignt o be scores of nurses retiring over the next 10-15 years. The jobs will be there. Someone always has to take care of the patients.

Is it sexist....
I would think it sexist if the male is expected to do so. There is nothing wrong with asking. In fact, I tell people I work with to ask me for help whenever they need it. I would never hesitate to ask them for help. I guess I was just raised that way. I don't have a problem lifting patients, and I am not prone to injury. People are not equals. Some people are better at some things than others. I am not particularly fond of anchoring catheters. People don't hesitate to help me out. No biggie.

What is the silliest thing you've heard a nurse say?
Ill try to make this thread funny again. This happened to an experienced nurse that I work with. She always talks sweet to her pt's. For example, if she missed an iv or blood draw she might say, "your poor little hand." Not really my thing, but a lot of people do it. We had a pt who was on the upswing after being admitted with severe sepsis. He had a little ICU psychosis, he wasn't very old. She was performing cath care and accidentally pulled on his foley a little bit and she said, "your poor little member." That is too funny. I still give her grief over it!
