I work on a med/surg unit 5:1. we do bedside report. Being primary nurses, its hard. As a solid group on our shift, its hard to help someone elses patients having no clue of the patients status. We have pt c brain mass's telling us they have to use the BR, when we get the to the edge of the bed you find out they cant bare weight..... we just wasted 5 minutes, then it takes another 10 minutes to remind them that they cant get OOB and convince them they need to use a bedpan or wait for a BSC. Plus its hard to tell walking in the room during report if the people visiting them are family/friends/co-workers. Our supervisor will tell us to go back in the room when she see's us in the hallway. Asking the visitors to leave sometimes takes longer then the report cause they decide to say all their goodbye's to the pt and end up making plans c the pt while we stand their waiting. Bedside report can be good cause as the on-coming nurse, you can decide who to see first and who can wait.

On our Neuro Med-Surg we will often have a insulin drip pt cause they "need a ccu bed" the doctor then puts them in another category of care AMSU, advanced med-surg something and staffing has to give us another Nurse. That nurse can only have 3 patients which include that pt and 2 stable pts that are not being discharged so the nurse wont get an admission. the problem with this is the patient gets taken off the insulin drip too quickly for budget reasons, then the nurse gets back a full load of patients and a unstable pt. =(

I know we pull on our tele floor, only hospital in our state of hawaii (by rumor) we have to stand there and apply pressure personally for 20-60 minutes in order to watch the patient at the same time. cant tell you exactly yet, i transfer there in May. I don't even know how to do it yet! =)

that message just made me tear- and that is why i became a rn, to help and heal. my best friend had a hard life and was pregnant at 18, my first hospital experience helping her give birth and her nurse was a b@^$h, i went to college a month later starting my pre-req's determined to improve hospital visits. now being in neuro and watching a pt go from unresponsive to walking out the door hugging and thanking you- no matter how long it takes- makes every ass-wiping day worth it.

I am a med-surg-neuro nurse. when we get patients from ER the ER nurses do what the ER doc orders and we do what the attmitting Doc orders. They are a give and take ER, they look over the orders that they are sending with the patients and give us a heads up, or if its UA's or Blood cultures or IV fluids they usually do them for us because sometimes the patient wont get to the floor for another hour or so after we get report- or a Doc will order a EDG, CT or whatever before being admitted so they will go there after ER, before us. My biggest irritation for any transfer's? They call to give report at nurses shift report, they are trying to get rid of them and we cant take them yet.

"Can you pick up my (used) tissue up off the floor?" while the patient is 2 feet away on a floor mat doing yoga.

I had 1 check all that apply, 0 fill in the blank. I took it in feb. of this year. The best way to help your anxiety is by learning about the test. google search it. read about how the computer selects the questions. You will learn that the computer will continue to test your weak spots until it thinks you should pass or not. Some people will say plenty ped's, some will say plenty med's, and some will say plenty priority questions. that means that, that was THEIR weakness. Whatever they had lots of questions on- they needed more questions on that topic to prove they new the area of conent. Thats why everyone comes out of that room thinking they failed and they say it was nothing they studied- because what they knew was not tested again throughout the exam. Because its impossible to study everything you have to learn more about the test and then spend time learning the way the questions are. I bought a million nclex books thinking the more I had the better off I was..... well you cant just buy them you have to read them. =) Find a question and answer book, where the question, answer and rational is on the same page. you need to instintly understand why you answered letter B and not the correct answer A. Get a calander and write 100 questions sunday- 200 questions monday. tuesday- rest. wednesday-100 questions. thursday 300 questions..... etc. I took it twice, this is what helped me pass. stop worrying about everybody else cause it will be differnet for you. Infact I stopped talking to my school friends and stoped caring who passed and who didnt...... it doesnt matter cause YOU need to pass. good luck-

I'm 25 and fresh out of school. I can only say that it can be done. Nursing school is hard but there are people in the program with young children, six children, and pregnant. the only thing as far as giving birth during the school year is you are only allowed to miss certain amount of clinical days, most schools are VERY strict about this. they dont care if you have morning sickness, grandpa died or your sister went to another hospital. you would have to time it well, or have a VERY understanding instructor, or take the semester off and jump back the following year. As for having children and working? piece of cake. you do have to be more aware of infectious diseases and your health, but if you have a good doctor- you can just take off work earlier, like most women do. I have the same problem but with age. I am 24, but I look 12 without makeup on. At least twice a week when I am in a hospital setting I get... "excuse me can you call the nurse", "are you allowed to do that?" No matter how I introduce myself, they dont hear me or understand me. Then they apologize and try to tell me its a compliment ~oh well~

My dad has a Harley. he had it all while I was growing up, I went on motorcyle "runs" with him. My bf cant stop talking about getting one as soon as his record clears up (insurance is crazy expensive) but for some reason it bothers me. I think it depends a lot for me on the quality of the driver. my bf thinks he shouldve been a race car driver..... he is a good driver but confidence can be dangerous.

For those of you who read the last post talking about this, sorry but I could not find it..... A while ago I read a post that talked about MA's calling themselves, or their co-workers/bosses, or patients calling them nurses. the comments went into the fact that they are NOT nurses, it's against the law in some states for them to call themselves nurses and etc. after going to work over the next few days (at a out patient clinic) where they are LPN's, MA's, and CNA's, I realized that I was in the same environment, everyone claims to be a nurse. So my question is..... I am a graduate of a BSN program. I am currently working as a CNA until i take my NCLEX next month. Am I a NURSE yet? Must I be Licensed? It's a common sense question, I know the answer is not yet, after my exam I will be a nurse.... But when a patient calls, and I answer the phone I do answer there questions and concerns. Am i wrong for doing this because the patient thinks that they are talking to a real nurse? :uhoh21:

That sucks. I'm really sorry to hear that, and i am in fear that i will hear the same news. What you said about telling your family and work hit home, I'm scared to even tell my family when i'm gonna take it. Everyone keeps telling me to have positive thinking and be confident, how do i get that? I go in and out of studying habbits. I study real hard for two days but am dissapointed with the practice exam results so i give up for a week. On good days i think of a few things that maybe you can think about..... remember when you were waiting for your answer on if you got in the nursing program or not? "that worked out". remember one of the first days in fundamentals when you realized you were the only one who didnt know how to take a b/p? "that worked out". remember when you had that life or death ped's exam that would have ended your life if you failed? "that worked out". Everything that worked out so far got you where you are today..... with a degree in a field that you love that will bring you happiness of punching out from a loooong hard day at work knowing you helped some one live that day. NO ONE can EVER take that degree away from you. you earned it, you deserve it, YOU HAVE IT. okay, so now you have this NCLEX that you have to take to start the rest of your life........ do you want it? do you need it? well, you needed everything else you got to get you here, so go get it. in one year you're gonna be applying for a dream job that will mean everything to you and you can look back at yet another thing (NCLEX) and say "that worked out" Start studying again, the more you know the more confident you'll be.
