Lunch breaks
Please tell me what you state you live in and is your hospital hiring?? lol. We work 6p-630a and are lucky get 15 minutes to eat on our floor in the hospital. They take 30 minutes out for a lunch but VERY rarely are we ever on any break or uninterrupted by our pager and have to stop eating to go take a pt to the bathroom, give pain meds etc. People that work days are more likely to take a full break but I know it doesn't always happen for them either. I'm jealous....lol

Please help me figure out what happened to my pt
Things can change in an instant with patients...and I'm still confused about your breaks. Where is this covering nurse coming from? How long are your shifts? We work 6p to 7a and we're lucky to get a 30 minute uninterupted break....I mean we don't have someone to cover you just eat quick when you can....a 2 hour break...and you can sleep?? WHAT????

How Far Do You Travel For Work?
50 miles each way. I work 6p to 630a so it can be a really long drive home sometimes but the hospital I work at is great...I am having to look for new jobs simply because of gas and the fact that I drive an SUV I spend an average of $700 a month on gas! :/ I don't think your drive is unrealistic at all and compared to a lot of people it is much better! :) Have her read this post with comments and maybe she'll see it's not that bad :)

Falls prevention
Doesn't your hospital beds have bed alarms? I work nights as well and it seems barbaric to wake up patients every hour. We get a lot of older/confused people on my floor and falls are a problem...by a porblem I mean one or two every month or two.....every couple days is extreme! Our biggest tool for fall prevention on confused patients who don't call to get up is a bed alarm that starts sounding as soon as they start to try and get out of bed so we can run to the room and stop them. We also have alarms in the chairs that can be set if they are up in the chair and try to stand up.

How would be a typical 12 hour night shift in med/surg in a hospital?
I don't have a lot of time to respond so I'll answer quick and to the point. I work 6p-6:30a. 6p-get report til 6:30 7-8: do all of my assessments on my 5 patients and then go chart everything 8-9: Pass all 9pm meds 10pm-get report on add'l 2 pt's (from the ppl that work 10a-10p) 11pm-get caught up on anything MN-do midnight rounds and chart 1-3am: finish any charting and get all of my 24 hour chart checks done 4am-4am rounds on all 7 patients and charting 5am-get in all of my electronic shift reports 6:20am-go give any add'l updates in report to oncoming nurses **Generally I stay very busy as there are always patients calling throughout all of these times needing something. We have 1 CNA per 12-16 patients btw.

organizational sheet?
I am a new nurse, graduated in may and finally found a job for which I have been working for last 4 weeks. I am trying to find anyone who might have a template or something that they print off for each of their patients to write down important info with assessments, pain level, time of last pain med etc for me to reference to when I cant sit down and chart right away....which is pretty much always lol. I work on an ortho floor if that helps but either way im just looking for some sort of flow chart to print off each day for me to keep track of everything. Thanks!

Being a mother, student and wife
although I am single and not married I can relate in the department of having a young child. I started nursing school when my daugher was 8 mo old and graduated when she was almost 3 ( 4 months ago) im not gonna tell u its not hard b/c it is but looking back now it is SOOOO rewarding to A. know that I am giving my daughter the life she deserves and B that I am doing what I love! It is best to do it when they are young so they can get used to the schedule than when they are older and have a harder time adjusting to mommies schedule! GOOD LUCK and I know you will do great! I know it seems overwhelming at times but just remember that you can do it and it will be bworth it in the end I PROMISE!!!!

...best jobs while in nursing school.
I graduated in may and I can tell you that it took me hundreds of job applications and 4 months to find a job...and its a 45 minute drive. Its a great hospital and is Magnet status but the gas is a killer!! From what I have heard, and experienced my friends in my class that worked as CNA's got jobs WAYYY faster than anyone else!! Had I known that, since I had my CNA, I would have got a job as one but I didn't know that! So my advice get a job ANYWHERE, a hospital if u can as a CNA!! In my experience with interviews etc....apparently theyw ill pick that one out of everyone else! Hope that helps!

Please help, injury and first day!
So long story short I am starting my first RN position tomorrow on an ortho/neuro floor. I had general orientation this week and have my first day on the floor with my preceptor tomorrow from 6a-630p. Well monday they gave me a tetorifice shot and the pain has become unbearable so today I went to dr b/c its red swollen hot etc. He said its a bad reaction to the medication and gave me hydrocodone. He also wrote a note to give my supervisor stating I am not to use my right arm for a few days. So what would you do?? Would you give it to ur DON and hope she's understanding or just do the best as possible? I am so nervous about tomorrow as it is and now this!!! Also, how much do preceptors usually have you do the first day and would it be bad if I just wanted to observe for the first day...or at least a good majority of it? I have NO idea what to expect and I've had like 3 anxiety attacks today! Also, I took a hydro tonight but obviously I cant take any tomorrow which I am SO worried about!! PLEASE GIVE ME ADVICE!!

Nursing school sucks!
Just stick with it you made it this far dont give up! I can tell you that many of us all went through the same HORRIBLE semesters, one after the other...horrible teacher after horrible teacher. But in the end....you will become a nurse and you won't ever have to see any of them again!! GOOD LUCK, you can do it!!!! :)

Should I take this position?
I don't have a whole lot of time to reply as I have got to get my little one to bed but I can tell you that i just graduated in May and took Nclex in June and have applied EVERYWHERE. If I were in your situation and you can afford not to take the job and keep looking than do that. However, all jobs regardless of what they are will help you gain experience to get a better job in the future. If it were me, because I need the money and the experience...I would take the job.

Nurses unemployed what is happening out there???
I agree that it is geographical. I graduated from nursing school in May 2010 and received my RN license in June after passing boards. I started applying for jobs here in Omaha, NE and surrounding areas beginning in March with no luck. I thought after I passed boards i would have more luck. NO SUCH LUCK! I applied for well over 200 positions during the last few months. I have a daughter and I'm a single mom so I couldn't just up and move somewhere else. I got an interview in L and D which was shocking but didn't get the job. I continued to apply everywhere, every hospital, LTC, doc offices etc but 9 out of 10 hospitals have on their websites NO NEW GRADS AT THIS TIME. HOW FRUSTRATING!! FINALLY I had an interview last week and got a job on the spot from one of the most recognized hospitals in the nation, its in Lincoln about a 40 minute drive but thats ok with me!! Its on an ortho/neuro floor so I think it will be a good start. I hate that there are such nursing shortages in some parts of the country and in others there are WAYYYYYYYY to many nurses. THere are 9 nursing schools ALONE in the city of Omaha and practically no jobs!
