I am surprised they didn't make you take a drug test. For what it's worth, I believe you. Some days (and nights) can get really busy and I can see how this happened. I have went home with a bottle of insulin in my pocket more than once. I know that is not the same as a narc, but when the floor is crazy busy and you are trying to do several things at the same time, it can happen. Can you call your HR department and ask them where they are in their investigation? I too am sorry this has happened to you. Use it as a learning experience. I bet you never take a narc home again! Your manager should have handled it....period. But, about the big bucks.........ummmmmm, I am a RN manager of abou 76 beds.....I make less than some of my LPN's! Your manager should have handled it because it is likely to go further and she will be involved anyway. She should have started an investigation immediately and reported to the DON and administrator. Suspected abuse must be reported to the state within 24 hours. (At least in Michigan.) Yes, your manager left you in an inappropriate situation. But, as for the big bucks......see above.

What kind of unit is it? Medical? Dementia? I manage 2 units, a 46 bed Alzheimer's unit and a 26 bed medical unit in a 220 bed LTC facility. Yes, it is challenging, but if you have decent staff it is doable. The medical unit is more work than the dementia unit because there are more admissions and discharges and the residents can be sicker. The Alzheimers unit residents usually stay for a long time. I managed a 56 bed medical unit for 6 years before accepting the two units I have now. I personally love my job. If you have been supervising on 3 - 11, you shouldn't have a problem. You already know the facility and its policies. The only thing I don't really like is it's a salaried position and you will be putting in longer hours, especially when the state is in for survey. You probably will have a 24 hour responsibility for the unit. I am rarely called for any problems, although I do carry a pager. The off shift supervisors handle everything on their shifts and just leave me a report. Once in a while I am called to work the floor (on day shift) if we are really short nurses. That doesn't happen very often though. (About 3 times last year.) Even though it is just a middle management position, I feel I can make a difference for our residents and their families. Do you like supervising now? You will be actually supervising all three shifts. But, like I said, where I work the afternoon and midnight supervisors usually can take care of any problems on their shifts and just report to me so I know what is going on. Good Luck!

You are not dumb! You made it through nursing school and passed your boards. Don't be so hard on yourself. It will come with time. You will be a really great nurse. It is all so overwhelming at the beginning, but, you will see, with time it becomes easier.

I am so sorry for your loss. You are in my prayers.

Answer call lights! They have been known to go into a room and see how long it takes for the light to be anwsered. Make sure water is within reach of all residents. Make sure all call lights are within reach of the residents. Make sure all residents that have to be repositioned every 2 hours are repositioned.......they will look! They have also been know to time briefs and come back and see if the resident has been changed. Make sure all bedpans and urinals are labeled with the residents room number or name, whatever your facility policy. No resident personal stuff in shared bathrooms. No medications or treatments left in the resident rooms. Make sure the rooms are neat and beds are made. All men and women have been shaved. All resident fingernails are trim and clean, hair combed. (No 'bedhead') All tubing is labeled with a date. Your applesauce on your med cart is dated. Residents should have an area where they can make a private phone call. (We were cited on this, residents used the phone at the nursing station. Now we have portable phones just for the residents to use.) The residents food should be the proper temp, not too hot or too cold. Make sure you follow your facility's policies. The Activity department can be a big help entertaining the 'problem' residents and keeping them busy. This is all I can think of off the top of my head. Good Luck!! We expect our annual survey any day now so I know what you are going through. I have been in LTC for almost 7 years. It is very stressful when the state is in. Oh, and don't give them more information then they ask for. They will quote you and often take it out of contex! Again, good luck!

Or 95 percent of the time, it gets blamed on the nurse!!! Not fair!
