I am a new grad NP in metro Atlanta, GA area and on average, if you haven't been doing much networking in school, it is tough to find a job. And in some cases, you find one but the compensation is terrible. I feel that it is a surplus in our area. People finding it tough in school to get preceptors and jobs. I am learning that it is very valuable to know your worth as a midlevel provider and definitely know and understand your scope of practice for your state. It's a lot and its important.

Thanks!! I'm extremely unhappy w/ floor nursing. I'm actually going back to school as we speak for FNP... I have to continue working the floor for another year until I graduate because of the flexibility. I dread going to work and add the stress of school, I'm not happy much... If it wasn't for a great husband, I would probably be completely depressed. I feel stuck until I graduate due to my school demands. But I will survive...

Look at the problems associate with SLE and that should help with the nursing diagnoses. Since it is a systemic disease, it affects many other areas. Hope that helps a little.

Knowing people and getting referrals are helpful. My hospital only hired a bunch of new grads recently but we r broke so we aren't hiring even though we are in dyer need of RN full time positions. But I'm on the south Atlanta side of town. I wish I could help you more.

R u LPN or RN? The reason I ask is because I know several hospital that have stopped hiring LPNs.

I agree with the other posters. It does depend on the school. Many of the schools I've looked at when I was prepping for undergrad required a 2.7 or higher but because it was competitive, there was hardly any way to get in with that GPA. Many programs allow only a set number of students per semester due to lack of instructors. In my own personal situation, I found that I had to retake a course or 6? to even be considered. Even after all that I was still not selected bc they said I had to retake the classes. It's all up to the school. Nevertheless, I've been an RN for 4yrs now. And I did fairly well. Now I'm in grad school.

Don't go South Atlanta!! Lol I hear Emory is really nice. I also hear Northside (North of Atlanta) is great but hard to get in. I can't really tell u rates but I've only heard positive things about those places.

Well I did Hurst and ATI review and pass the 1st time. I got 76 questions... But I did review and rational questions. It was one that had 3500 questions. I did them all. I'll pray that the next time you take it you pass. I wish I had some good advice for you. NCLEX was very hard for me.

When I started nursing 4 yrs ago, within 6mos, I had horrible heel pain!! Went to the doc and was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. He "prescribed" Asics. They were fine for 3 months with the help of steroid injections in both heels. Then the pain got worse. Then I spent $325 on orthotic insoles that the podiatrist mold for me... My feet started to get a whole lot better. I'm considered to have a low arch. I went back to "structured" Asics and I have very minimal pain!!! Still can't comfortably wear heels but doc says wedges r best for me. Hope this helps!!

I have 3 yrs of experience in Med Surg and I don't like Med Surg. I want to do other things too. Already accepted into grad school part time MSN FNP program. I plan on transferring off my floor to gain experience elsewhere while in grad school. So u still have options while n school. Another option could be to shadow someone u know in the areas that ur considering and see if that's what u really want to do.

I would suggest you accept a position somewhere else first so you won't miss too much money.

If it was me I would change jobs if its that bad. U were only there for 2 seconds so I would just let it go and move on.

Wow!! Where do u work? 40 bed general med Surg- RN 1:6; LPN 1:6; CNA 1:10-15( depending on staffing) we do all of our own admits (with RNs admitting LPN pts d/t "scope of practice" - GA law), D/c's, education, med recs, IVs, ect.. After 11p, there is no secretary and we still r on paper charting!! I need to find some where else to work!!! Lol

I don't personally have anything on my background but I know several new grads who did and still were able to get jobs. Just know that they will be watching u if they hire u. My job hired a nurse with DUI on her record and she was also hired at other places. Some hospitals like Grady Memorial will give u an opportunity. HTH!!

I thought nursing was my dream job!!! lol I don't know what else I would do. I want a job that doesnt hurt my footsies as much!!! 1st yr of nursing and got plantar fasciitis!!(as I sit here at 4am icing my foot)... Now that I think about it, I would want to be a professional Basketball player!!! Oh how I miss bball!!! I was so much smaller then!!

I made so many mistakes when I was a new grad. It was just last yr. They reported because that have to. Just know you are human. This too shall pass. It is very scary as a new nurse. No matter what happens after this, it is now a lesson learned. As you will hear over and over again, it's a 24 hr job. You can only do so much in one shift. Slow down just a little bit. Everything seems like a priority but safety is the biggest. Breathe and get some sleep!! I know exactly how you feel!!

Jewl!!!! I can definately relate!!! I've now made it over my first yr of nursing. I felt the same exact way you did after six months on the med-surg floor. I have survive b/c I don't quit too easy (definately wanted to). I cried all the way home some nights. But it is worth it to stick it out. You just have to realize that EVERYTHING is considered a priority and at some point you have to do what you can. So what you gave a 10 o'clock scheduled med at 1130. Most of the home meds those pts dont take at that time anyway. Now is the time where ur learning so much at one time. This is expected. I don't believe I'm cut of for med-surg but everyone says its your foundation. Get that yr or 2 then if you don't like it, move on. Gotta find your niche!!! Hope this helps!!

$21.43/hr + shift differential: $2.50 E, $3.00 N, +$2.50 wknds. Med/Surg in Georgia. I am 6 mos in (new grad May 2010) and happened to come in when it was time for annual eval and got a $0.14 raise. I have heard from other ppl I graduated with ranging from $21-$28/hr depending on hospital and whether they are accepting benefits or not with shift diffs/wknds ranging from $3-$5. To Mudder: Our Director told our LPN's that they now have barely 2 yrs to get their RN or they will no longer have a job at our hospital. So getting your RN may be advisable just in case that is something that will start happening in other states. I'm pretty sure with your experience as an RN, you will get more $$.

i feel the exact same way! i have had reebok classics, nike shoxs, and now rockports, all worn with compression hose and recently dr. sholls insoles. as soon as i get off that 12 hour shift, all i can do is lay down. the fiance thinks i'm being lazy but he noticed just last night, how much pain i was in. i was still in pain after i laid down for bed. i don't know what to do. i hate the aching and pain of my lower legs and heels (pain rating= 8/10).

I was a CNA before I became a nurse. I did CNA work for 3 yrs before I actually got into the program. I only did it for a little bit of money and my mom thought it would be good to get an understanding of their job so when I became a nurse I would understand their responsibilities. With all that being said, I think it was helpful in my 1st semester as far as basic duties. It also helped with general patient interactions. I did both LTC and hospital. I think it will be helpful to do it PRN in a hospital and not a LTC facility. If you do, find a nurse that is willing to teach you some things and be the best at what you do even though you may not like it. I didn't always like what I had to do as a CNA but I like most of my patients and it was gratifying when you could actually make them feel a little better in the midst of illness.

I got some, if not all my books from Textbooks.com: Cheap Textbooks & Used College Textbooks. Buy Textbooks, Sell Textbooks or Rent Textbooks. and some frm amazon. U can go to the online CSU bookstore to compare prices. U can also put in ur class and instructor there and see what books u need. The will probably sent out the book list right b4 New Student Orientation (NSO). Hope that helps!
