Older and back in nursing school...????
@carrollmacc: I actually was in school one semester at a time. I went for 3.5 years. I was 2,5 semesters from graduation when hubby said that was enough. I did want to finish but hubby knew I woudl want to keep my license and have to work a certain amount of hours a year to keep it so he said there was no point in finishing and to wait til later when kids are older. I have done it that way and it didn't make my hubby happy.

Older and back in nursing school...????
Is anyone here in thier late 40's or 50's and back in school for the second time?? I ask because I was in school in my late 20's-early 30's and hubby decided he didn't want me working so I had to leave school. (4.o gpa and a great student. had nothing to do with my grades or performance) I was going to go back to school in my mid 30's but I had another baby. (that was a BIG reaosn I had to leave before cuz I and hubby wanted me to stay home with babies) So...now I have a 21 month old. I dream, and think about going back to school all the tim. I get jealous of people who are in school. I was a member of this board back in nursing school but took a break ..and came back...and took a break...and came back... because I love it here and I feel at home on the nursing boards. I sometimes get a terrible feeling in my stomach when on here cuz I know I will not be able to go back to school until my 21 month od is nearly an adult. I am torn. I want so badly to be a nurse, to go back to school. ..but, I also don't want ot miss anything with my baby and I want to be here for him and the older 2 for everything. So... That brings me to my question.. i want to knwo if anyone here started school and for one reason or another had to leave and then went back when in the 40's or 50's and how was it?? Was it harder or easier? Was it tough being around a lot of younger people, kids?

off duty nursing?
I'm not a nurse yet. But... I have always been the person who jumps at the opportunity to help anyone if they ook like they are in need. I enjoy it and I would not hesitate. Everyone is different. In nursing school 3.5 years before I had to leave cuz hubby didn't want me working. Now I have a 1.5 yr old and the 2 older kids so won't og back to school for a loooong time. but.. I still have that urgency to help if I am needed. I almost feel like I look for people in need so I can help. but.. that is just me.

Patient made me feel like low life
I am a born again Christian and I would never tell someone that they are stupid for having tats or tell them how ugly they are. That is very rude to do. Once a tat is on then why tell the person how much YOU hate them? I am not "religious" I have a relationship with Christ but someone who does not understand this would say that I was a religious person. I hate to be clumped in with rude naysayers just because of what I believe in. Just tell people what the "J" actually stands for. Don't be embarrassed or feel like you need lie and hide it. It is no ones business pt or not. As long as you are using universal precautions and you are clean and sanitary then why should anyone complain.? I think some pt's are just angry about their situation or are in pain and act rudely. OR... some are just plain rude all the time. You do not owe anyone a response. Just change the topic to something other than your tats and move on. Don't take what pt's say, personally. You can give them you absolute all and some will still spit in your face and treat you like a servant and nothing more. Tomorrow is another day.

Any other pre-nursing students over 45?
This is such an interesting topic for me. I am 37. I started school when I was 29. I had to leave 2 semesters before I was done because my hubby wanted me to be home with the babies. My babies are old enough now for me to go back but.... one. I have an 11 month old now so I think that I will have to wait til I am about 45 til I can go back to school and start all over again. (worst part is that I was a straight A student. arg) I was wondering the same thing....if there was anoyone that woudl go back in thier 40"s. I am glad I will not be alone.

Nursing Students Unite
I agree with the sleep part. Also find ways to relax like a yoga class or regular exercise. You have to sleep and be able to unwind weekly (daily if you can) or you will burn out and make mistakes.

Worried About NLN Exam
I took the NLN before I took any pre-reqs and I passed. It was not too bad at all. Just get the book and do what you can and know that you did your best and I know you will pass!

All I can say is EEEEEEKKKKK!!!!!
I am so sorry to anyone who tried to read this thread. I was so tired and very stressed. I remember it well. I left school in the summer of 2005. My husband wanted me to be home with the babies more and so did I. My 2 at home were 1 and 2 at the time and that added to my stress levels. My husband said I could go to school as long as it did not interfere with home at all. I would cook meals for dinner and set them in fridge and take care of babies during the day and then go to classes at night and study from the time I got home from clinical or class until about AM when the babies would wake up. I remember one night setting up my text books to study, turning the TV on (in my bedroom) and the next thing i knew I was waking up in my Pj's the next morning. My hubby swears got my pj's on. My books were stacked neatly by the bed but I do not recall doing it. I was burnt out. i had a friend in A&PI with me. She left school cuz she had a baby. She is now an LPN but is not currently working because she wants to be home with her kids. I had another baby about a year ago and I moved to another state. My hubby says I can go back to school when the kids are older. My friend is moving here too and we will go back together again. I think that when the kids are older, it will be more fun and less stressful for me that the first time. I was a GREAT student. 3.8 GPS but I was too stressed and I think it showed. Not a good thing to be with your patients

That sounds so cool! I wish we had one of those around here. I would love to go and my daughter who is only 9 wants to be a doctor and I think she should start in nursing to see how she likes it. Doing it right befor you graduate from HS is a soopagreat idea!! The experience you are gaining is so cool!!! I think anyone going into the med. field (any proffesion) would greatly benefit from something like this. I am so jealous!!

Are cardiology Stethoscopes harder to uses?
I have a cardiology Stethoscope (from back in nursing school) We were required to buy our own and now use anyone elses. Even in MRSA rooms we had to use our own and we just wiped it down with alcohol swabs real well after we left the room. Every school and hospital is different with policy's> I would wait til you get into the nursing program and see what they will require of you to get. I am not sure I woudl suggest getting a real expensive cardiology Stethoscope, like someone said it would make a great grad gift. you don' t need that in nursing school. I do love mine ut really did not need it in school. Wait for classes to start and read your supply list and only get what they require of you. We had to have our own pen light and stethoscopes. We had to get the medical scissors too. In fact I let someone borrow my scissors before a clinical and the prof wanted me to cut a bandage during the clinical and I had not gotten my scissors back yet. I got into trouble and points taken off for the day for not having them in my lab coat. I was so mad at the person who forgot thiers and borrowed mine. grrr. Make sure you have what is required at all times on on your person.

Preparing for A&P I
From having taken it a few years ago when I was in school. (Left to be home with kids and when they get older I will go back with one of my best friends!) Just study hard!! Listen to prof, study everything they give you and have a good study partner. Ask each other questions and take turns answering them. My best friend was my study partner and she made the class seem so eeasy!! I also liked the A&P I and II coloring books you can get at the bookstore in the medical section. They help with the bones and all the parts and placements and stuff like the Chondyles and epichondyles and such.
