  1. I was on vacation 2.5 hours away from home and had a blocking kidney stone. I had to leave and go home to my hospital. I will never forget in the emergency room the surgical resident said to me " YOur not that sick since you don't have a fever!" Really-- I had a stent put in the next day, I was on iv antibiotics because my urine was total pus and infected. I had to return to have the stone removed and a stent was placed until 3 weeks later. I was off of work. But I was not sick! lol. Everyone is different! People should be looked at as individuals. If a patient does not understand their vitals then the nurse should take the time to explain them.
  2. Lets be honest! I love my job but I would not be doing it if I didn't have bills to pay.
  3. I can't believe people can be so inconsiderate. Or that places put up with such tardiness. At our work we are late if we clock in 1 minute late. We have to get report by five minutes after. That sounds like craziness!
  4. The bad thing is now hospitals will be reimbursed for how satisfied the patient was with their care. Imagine the patient's survey who did not get what they wanted.
  5. We work one winter holiday and one summer holiday. If it is our holiday to work we work the holiday and the day after. For example for Thanksgiving-- I work wednesday night (holiday pay) and thursday night. but I am off Christmas and New Years completely. So we rotate holidays every 3 years. People also have the option of working just part of the holiday but then you work almost every single one.
  6. I work labor and delivery and many of these immature 18,19,20,and21 year olds are having kids of their own. They are the worst patients to take care of. Very whiney, don't want to feel anything and extremely demanding and spoiled. Also taking full advantage of Medicaid. These are the people raising the future generation!!!! Heaven help us!
  7. I am not a new nurse but when I graduated from nursing school 20 years ago starting pay was $20.00. I see starting pay has not increase dramatically. Just curious how much did you expect to get paid. $40,000 starting pay out of college is not bad! Nurses often don't get raises every year and when they do it is very little!
  8. Of course! Having a difficult pregnancy makes anyone feel out of wack! Good luck! :)
  9. He really has no room talk, he is not exactly what I would call easy on the eyes to look at. He use to be a dj on the radio in Detroit and was a disgusting pig about everything!
  10. Working in L&D does not make me want to have more children. I have four which is plenty! I love what I do and get to see babies all the time! I say go for it if hat is where you want to work!
  11. I was an l&d nurse for10 years. I left went back to school for teaching. Taught five years and realized with four teenagers going to go to college could not make enough money to pay off my student loans and do right by my kids. I am back in nursing in l&d at a different hospital and love it. I regret going back to school! Maybe you should look for another specialty or work at a different place! Good luck! Hope you find what you are looking for!
  12. I was turned down for a position but kept applying for others. I am now working at that hospital on a different unit which I love. Keep trying it just means that someone may have been a better fit for that position. Good luck!:)
  13. As a labor and delivery nurse I think your birthplan is very reasonable! Just curious- is this your first baby? A trend that I have noticed is that first time moms always have birthplans. A birth without medicine or epidurals flies out the window when they feel how intense the pain gets. It is rare that a second time mom has a birth plan! I don't see why a baby has to stay in the nursery unless it is being observed for low sugar issues. Best of luck withthe birth you desire. If it is really such a concern delivering at this hospital then I would go where my needs will be met regardless of how much I would have to pay. At every hospital a nurse's goal is to provide care so that a healthy baby and mom are the outcome. I have also seen things change in a matter of seconds and things move quickly to obtain a healthy out come regardless of how the baby is delivered! Best of luck!
  14. Take the days. I am on nights with no hope of getting on days for years in labor and delivery. I have only been on nights since January. I love the people I work with but it is wrecking havoc on my body! The extra money is nit worth it!
  15. Say something! That girl is being bullied and needs support!
  16. I was a nurse for 10 years. I made the foolish mistake of going back to get a teaching degree. Now in debt after five years of teaching kindergarten, I have returned to nursing. I am a labor and delivery nurse. I let my license lapse so I had to retake the Nclex after 20 years. Passed and when I was job hunting I was told I would have to take a refresher course. No way was I doing that since they are geared towards med surg. One hospital gave me a chance and it has been fantastic ever since. Love being back where I belong!
  17. I was a nurse for 10 years, went back to school for teaching. I taught kindergarten for 5 years. I am now back in nursing. I loved my summers off but worked my tail off during the school year. This cut into my family time tremendously. I missed my kids field trips and conferences because I was teaching. Nursing allows me to make a much better income while spending no out of pocket for classroom supplies. I work 3 - 12 hour shifts a week and can work extra if I wanted to and paid for it. Teaching I worked many extra hours with no pay. I guess what I am trying to say is get out of teaching if your heart is not into it. Nursing is so much better because it still allows you to be a teacher.:)
  18. He got a job in teaching because he is male. As a former teacher I know the job situations. There are so many teachers out of work which is why I have to go back to nursing but can't seem to get a job. I have 8 years of nursing experience. what the heck! Michigan is a difficult place to move to now. Congratulations on your mans teaching job.
  19. You have to remember that all jobs have positives and negatives. It is never like it is in school. See if you can shadow a nurse for a day. What better way to find out if it is really for you then to observe a nurse in action.
  20. Days off same as your kids only if you work in the same school district. Unable to attend fieldtrips and conferences because are often scheduled at the same time you have to do yours.
  21. As a nurse who left to go into teaching I would say go with nursing. I am going back to nursing because of the poor economy. There are no jobs for teachers at all where I live. There are quite a few nursing jobs. Teachers make far less then nurses. Pros of teaching breaks in the year. Cons you will work 12 hour days 5 days a week in the beginning. Best of luck with your choice.:)
  22. Wow! I have not been a part of this forum for long. I was a teacher for 5 years and am returning to nursing. I am disappointed at the hostitlity among fellow nurses. The perception about teachers is also negative and I think all this hostility contributes to making the situation worse. Nurses are nurses regardless of the education. We all take the same NCLeX to prove our worth.:)
  23. Nurses do make good money. I am a nurse and a teacher. As a teacher I was forced to pay for my Mater's Degree to maintain certification. With a Master's in Teaching I make less than a brand new grad out of nursing school with an ADN. And then I got layed off. I worked twice as hard as a kindergarten teacher and look forward to returning to nursing so I don't have to hear well atleast you get your summers off. Not true always taking classes, preping for next class and doing required professinal development. Nursing will be refreshing!:)
  24. I wish I had some good advice. I was out of nursing for 6 years where I was a labor and delivery nurse for 10 years, because I became a teacher. Due to the economy I am going back to nursing. I had to retake the NCLEX. The first time I took it it was paper and pencil. I took it last weekend and left thinking there was no way I passed. Well, I did pass! It was hard. I studied by using the Hurst book and Saunders book. I did not do well on the questions and was only scoring about 60%. Just keep reviewing and know that you can do it. Good luck!
