  1. I finish school in May, I am so torn on what to do for a review, my classmates are going with ATI for the price, my school uses ati and I don't like it now so I decided not to do it. I am torn between Kaplan and Hurst I attended both of there seminars and really liked Hurst I though Kaplan was kinda boring, I need something to keep my attention. I am scared and excited all at once, when I attended Kaplans seminar I felt so stupid with the practice exam, it made me feel like I did not know anything and I am doubting my skills
  2. I did pass I am getting ready to take Peds/Ob any psych....Did you have trouble?
  3. I also know how it is to have infants I have 3 kids and still manage to work part time, take my son to football practice 4 nights out of the week, my oldest is getting ready to graduate highschool and my youngest is in dance, and I still manage to maintain a B average, so yes every person has their own obstacles. If you did not mean it in a sarcastic or hurtful way then I was wrong, however, it sounded pretty sarcastic to me, she has to make this decision on her own, she is simply looking for some insight, and if she does do it and has to withdraw, most instructors take the situation into account and would let her repeat, its not up to what WE think its about HER decision and whats best for her family.
  4. She was asking for advice not to be bashed for using the term "it". Yes I understand that the term "it" refers to an object , however I don't think she meant to offend anyone by using the word, to be honest I had to go back and read the post again to see how and when "it" was used, and earlier in the post she referred to the embryo or fetus as a newborn....I have several classmates who have delivered over the winter break, as I stated in post, my fellow classmate delivered on Thursday and returned to class on Monday and maintained one of the highest GPA's in the whole class and still is! It a decision she has to make and ask herself do I have a good support system? Will I have a reliable daycare? Will I be able to dedicate my time the program as well as being able to handle mother hood? Will I be able to divide my time? Its a hard decision to make but one that needs careful consideration. This is a sensitive subject in my opinion and if you can't word your advice without being nasty then don't say it at all! If you don't think its a good idea then simply state why without being mean!!!!! :heartbeat
  5. Congrats Last semester one of my fellow nursing students was pregnant and she was due around the same time, we left class on a Thursday and resumed class on monday and she was not pregnant anymore, she did not miss a beat and maintained a higher gpa than me! :) Kudos to her and Kudos too you because I have faith that you will do the same :) ALWAYS look at the glass half full not half empty ! :)
  6. I was unsure of myself this semester, totally different from last, I went to one of the other instructors that tutors me she gave me a GREAT suggestion to help stay organized and how not to forget anything! I take index cards I put on the colored one the information that never changes, example needle gauge sizes, soloutions(isotonic etc) I have one card specifically for bath supplies, one card with what to to if patient is on TPN, tube feeding etc, I have white cards with questions to ask the patient, one for assesment etc, I put meds that specific patient is on, I write questions I have on one and ask the instructor, I sometimes will go into the bathroom and stand there just to think something out before I do it step by step, sometimes I will tell my partner to just stop for a min so I can think about something, it helps, I find taking my time and thinking it through helps me, I think about meds the night before, I had a pt who has G tube straight drain, so when we give her meds we have to clamp off for half hr, I write that on my sheet the night before so I don't forget! Try it and see how it works for you, the worst case is that you don't like it
  7. Don't give up! I am feeling very disappointed in myself too! I have the opposite problem I am passing clinical but bombing in lecture! I do great on elolve and great on ATI test. When it comes to the exams I don't do well! I keep telling myself if I have to repeat then I will have a better foundation for med/surg II. I know how you feel. I am sick of studying and being shot down when I take an exam!
  8. I really don't know how she is as an clinical instructor but I know I learned a lot from her lectures...Is there some reason why you don't want Ms Remi? She was an amazing instructor, we All passed every exam, because she lectures you on the content before the lecture, she will tell you what to focus on, She has a lot of knowledge and she wants you to pass so she will help you however you need it. I loved her I wish I could have her this semester
  9. I would stick with Ms Remi, she is probably the only reason I passed the exams. She gives you a lot of important information and will help you. Harbor has a diverse population of patients, ranging from HIV to Resp care. I learned a lot from her, I am not sure about Mrs. Hall. I know she was not happy with her site last semester don't know where she is this semester
  10. I work for an ob/gyn and sometimes in the older female patient he would test the urethra by place a small q-tip and have them cough to see if the range the q-tip moved. I always handed him the supplies. I was not thinking and I put the ky jelly on the Qtip handed it to him and she coughed ! I was not thinking by handing him a hollow barrel Qtip so when she coughed the urine flew threw the Qtip (like blowing water threw a straw) right in his face! It took EVERYTHING I had not to laugh, he calmly stood up excused himself into the bathroom and washed his face!
  11. Just wondering how you like the program so far? How is is going? I am a bit overwhelmed with med/surg its very difficult....ugh let me know if I can help you. patty
  12. I jumped to the conclusion that since it was elevated it was high. I did not take into account that was fasting. TPN has a high calorie and dextrose count? would that make the glucose elevated? I don't know why I don't think of this when I am testing.
  13. I am confused. I took my first exam for Med/Surg and I am terribly disappointed in myself, I studied and studied but apparently it was not the right information or maybe I am still not a good "critical thinker" But my question was A patient is on tpn feeding and has a blood glucose levels of 120 what do you do? a call doctor b give insulin as ordered c recheck in 4 hrs I chose b because the normal range is 70-99. most in my class say that its C. Is a or C correct and why?
  14. patty554 replied to LouisVRN's topic in Ob/Gyn
My sister had twins doctor said they were miracle babies, both had true knots and both were healthy, hate to think of what could have happened if they did not come 1 week early,,
  15. HELLO! CONGRATS! I did accept my seat into the program this past sept. I love it I love my clinical instructor and the lecture instructors! DON'T study med calc Dr. M has her own way of teaching and it will just confuse you. Make sure you remember basic math, percents, ratio, decimals fractions etc... are they doing the 2 week refresher to get you prepared? email me and I will send what your first assignment will be! [email protected] study your fluid and electrolyte that has been my weakest so far! :)
  16. thank you I think I am going to try and write the rationale out that seems really useful, I will I know alot of the answers but freeze and mark wrong answers... i need to slow down I get so intimidated by the clock, I have wrong answers but I answered them all....does your instructors stand all over the classroom watching like your a crimianl? we have them all over 2 on each row and one in the front standing, thats kinda nerve racking I am afraid to look away.
  17. ins means insurance, I don't know about pressure on leg, it stated in chart bathroom privlages, no pt orders or anything, he is in so much pain hurts him just to lift it
  18. yes in a hospital, I feel so bad for him....
  19. I am confused about something. I know I am just a student, but I am kinda scratching my head. My patient I was responsable for has a large necrotic wound on calf approx 12x6, (they did surgical debridment), he was just dx with diabetes II, malnutrition, metabolic acidosis, hyponatremia, hypomagnesia, and has no ins, middle aged. I performed am care on Tuesday and he asked for a walker, the nurse told me could not have one because does not have ins. I did his complete am care (he prob could have done his own but looked sad, did not feel well and liked having the attention) the next day I went to get update on my patient and during the night he had to have a bm, refused to use bedside commode (he also refused day before, pride I guess?) went to go to the bathroom in a hurry (pressed call light with no response quick enough, (when ya gotta go ya gotta go) FELL. was not hurt thankfully, but I don't really understand why they just won't give him a walker or cane? I don't get it would it not be cheaper to provide device than surgery for broken bone or sued? I don't get it!?!?!?!?
  20. I don't know what state your in but in Maryland I am a student and we are not allowed to PUSH ANYTHING no one but the nurse and doctor is allowed to! They told us that the first day of clinical! :redlight:
  21. Thank you everyone for your post! I do feel better after reading the encouraging posts! Its just the instructors are so rigid and discouraging! The subjects are so broad! My clinical instructor is wonderful but the lecture is just overwhelming to say the least! I will definitly purchase the David's success book and ask myself why and how for each exam question!
  22. Congrats to you ! :yeah: I started in August! If I have any advice it is to remember nutrition and fluid and electrolytes. Best of luck to you!!!!!!!!
  23. I am very discouraged with myself. I am currently passing fundamentals but by the skin of my teeth. I don't know what else to do to make myself think critical. I have bought books, stayed for tutorials, read every chapter, studied powerpoints, I even wake up in the middle of the night thinking and reviewing in my head........any suggestions how to change my way of thinking from memorization to thinking critical? :crying2:thank you.....
  24. I am starting my fundamentals rotation and I feel very uncomfortable around the nursing staff. whenever I try to get information from the computer I hear them talking under breath and breathing like I am bothering them. If we are in post or pre-conference they come in making as much noise as they can talking loud and just being disrespectful to my instructor. I understand we can sometimes be a pain, but I am trying to learn, sometimes I am so nervous I feel as though I am going to vomit, it is bad enough I am being graded and tested non-stop by my instructor, why do the nurses and staff have to add to my anxiety?
  25. No you can't stick an object in the rectum instead of your finger when inserting a suppository!
