  1. I'm totally confused and this is not my first rodeo, so to speak! I applied for a post-masters program since I'm already a NP and also have my DNP. I applied to UAB because I could start (I thought) in January 2012. Friday, I got an acceptance letter to start in August! Maybe I'm delusional, but I would bet money that I applied to start in January since I have some commitments this fall that I considered before deciding to apply for the post-masters program in the first place! For those of you who have been in direct communication with the faculty, who should I call to straighten this out? Also, is there an online course we can take to satisfy the OSHA requirements? Of course I do this at woke yearly, but I'm not sure if UAB would accept that.
  2. LisaDNP replied to LisaDNP's topic in General Nursing
I have no idea about that but good luck to you!

If anyone is willing to move, the Memphis VA is having a job fair 10-23-10. They are looking to hire RNs ONLY in many different specialty areas. In the advertizing, there is no mention of experience needed. There is more information on their website if you're interested.
  4. OP, Be careful!! Don't burn any bridges! Write the letter you want to write but don't send it until someone objective as a chance to look it over for you.
  5. A friend of mine graduated with a post-masters certificate in PMHNP, so yeah, it's real! She was already a FNP.
  6. The University of South Alabama has a distance PMHNP program. What's going on in Florida? Moratorium???
  7. Hey Kerry, While an ACE cough is not an allergy it is a very annoying side effect some patients have from taking ACE-I. Another class of medication should be prescribed for HTN if an ACE causes a cough.
  8. I'm a FNP and the longer I practice, the more I realize that everything comes down to psych. Any physical illness can cause mental stress and vice versa. My FNP program was sorely lacking in psych epxeriences. I also work with PTSD patients and I wish everyday that I had the skills a PMH-NP has. I'm seriously thinking of getting a post-master's certificate in psych.....after I finish my DNP...if my DH promises not to divorce me !!!
  9. I think it depends on the state you're practicing in. Some allow a new NP to practice for a specific time frame while getting certified. Other states require certification before you can practice as a NP.
  10. Should the PhD prepared nursed take an exam to prove him or herself? I took a certification exam and passed it. I'm not a physician. I'm a nurse practitioner. When I complete my DNP, I can be addressed as "Doctor" because of academic credentials alone, but not physician. A physician is a MD or DO. PS: A chiropractor can do pelvic exams?? I think NOT!
  11. ->>>>>Also- just saying that it will happen doesn't make it so. It's a similar issue with the push to phase out ADN programs. States have tried it on occasion (and failed), but it is up the individual state BON, and there is no way you will all the sudden get everyone to agree on this issue. Saying it WON'T happen also doesn't make it so..................
  12. Another nurse/pilot couple here. I'm a NP and my husband makes about 3x what I make. He also works less hours than I do!
  13. NEVER EVER let your license expire even if you have to pick up aluminum cans to pay the renewal fee!!!
  14. I'm not trying to be rude, but usually seniority rules...and you have none. Sorry.
  15. right, and of course that is not what i was referring to at all. i can't tell you how many times a week i tell my son to "look it up" instead of giving him the answers! i'm looking for incidents more like cookienay and keymaster described.
  16. Some examples of what I'm referring to are not giving complete information in order to make the other nurse look incompetent. Or knowing someone is going to do a procedure or give a medication incorrectly and letting them do it in spite of the fact that it may hurt the patient. I'm not referring to letting a new nurse figure out problems on his/her own when it doesn't cause the patient any harm. I'm in a DNP program. I've had experience with this type of behavior in the past and was just curious about others having the same experience. I also collaterally work with someone who hoards knowledge. I'm looking for some approaches to take with this person. Thanks for your posts so far!
  17. I'm interested in hearing any of your experiences with nurses or other medical personnel deliberately not sharing important information that could or did have an effect on patient care. I know I've experienced this in the past with the "offender" stating they just wanted to see how long it would take me to figure so-and-so out. A trial by fire in their eyes, but a danger to a patient in mine. Anyone want to share?? Thx, Lisa
  18. Thanks for the information! I've never heard that students should wear the shorter lab coat before. I wonder if it's a regional thing or if I'm just clueless!
  19. It's a faux pas to wear a long lab coat? I had no idea!
  20. I agree with Missbecky that CPRS is great! It can do just about everything you may want or desire. I've also worked with Cerner in the past and the two systems are very comparable. Actually, I heard that the people who developed Cerner basically "stole" their ideas from CPRS. I, of course, have no idea if that is true or not but there are many similarities!
  21. You have a great attitude! I treasure the 3 1/2 years I had there. It was a hard transition but well worth it. I learned so much about many things. Living there is a great experience.
  22. No matter how much you have or you make, a vet can be treated for any condition that is service connected at any time.
  23. Good luck to you on getting a RN job in Hawaii! It was a totally different situation when I was there. Basically, a RN could write his or her own ticket. Just don't get discouraged and don't give up. Also realize that you're in a different world over there.....learn and adapt. You'll be just fine!!
  24. It doesn't matter at all where you take the NCLEX. If you want to take it in Hawaii to be with your husband, then do so. Don't work as a CNA for three years while you're in Hawaii. If you do this, you'll still be a new grad then you PCS back to CONUS or wherever. Just reiterating, it doesn't matter where you take the NCLEX. It transfers everywhere if educational requirements are met. If your school is accredited, no worries. You can get preferential status for hiring at military/govt facilities. Pursue this. I realize the RN situation in Hawaii is particularly bad but just keep trying to get a RN position even if it is doing something you don't particularly want to do. It's ridiculous to advice a RN to work as a CNA for three years. As a former military wife who worked as a RN in Oahu, I would hate to see you take this very bad advice!
