  1. Hi, I started working in a clinic and have a collaborative agreement with one physician. However, there are other physicians with their own panel of patients. May I work with these other doctors or do I work only with the physician I have the collaborative agreement with?
  2. Im an NP for almost a year. I got accepted into a DNP program right after school and I decided to defer it for a year--and I realize I am still not ready to go back to school and I am not really sure Im still interested in getting a DNP. For those who have years of experience as an NP, do you feel obliged to get a DNP or not at all? For those in the DNP program, are you learning more? I think I may try again but just not now
  3. Pick one that really aligns with your interest. Medicine is really hard so start looking into the job descriptions of positions you want to obtain and see if these are things you can be willing to do 50 to 60 hours a week..maybe more.
  4. They should only mandate this if they provide students with enough preceptors and clinical sites..I feel bad for NP students nowadays scouring for preceptors. It's hard enough to find a good one. There's definitely a disconnect between nursing academics and the working world.
  5. I realize I don't want to be an NP long term as I realize there is no ladder to climb in this field. I would like to lead one day. I definitely know for sure I desire a leadership position. However, I am not sure whether I should pursue a DNP (already accepted into a program) or do masters in nursing/health administration. Which degree is better if I would like to be a nursing director one day? Thanks
  6. You may like OR..must be highly organized and detailed. make sure to prepare everything needed for he procedures
  7. Hi, i can relate to the post above. I have less than a year of experience thus far, but I feel like a 'glorified nurse' most of the time: entering orders and writing notes for the MD. I want to get involved in research but my attending prefers to work with med students/residents in this arena. Im thinking of switching to a career where I feel like there's potential for leadership position. Im grateful for my job but also quite disillusioned with the NP career. I dont think I can do this long term--but then again maybe it will get better. any advice appreciated.
  8. It does get better. I cried every 2 weeks during the first 4 months then most of the tasks become routine. You are dong so many things for the first time. I started to feel competent by 2nd year.
  9. I had a coworker who was an NP working as an RN. Its ok. go for it.
  10. Hi, I'm a new NP (less than a year), but I am beginning to consider shifting into administration or field in patient safety/quality. Im a bit frustrated with restrictions on NP scope. Im interested in doing some research but I find that there's more interest in allocating research opportunities to med students/physicians in my field... I want to work where I have more autonomy and feel that I can ascend the ladder... If you are a nurse or NP and was able to shift to admin/quality improvement, how did you do it? I got accepted into a DNP program--but based on what I ultimately want to do, should I apply for MS in Health Admin/informatics or stick to the DNP? Thanks
  11. Hi, sorry for my very naive question but for the first time I got employed at a unionized position..There is pension plan, which Im already enrolled in. However, some workers are not unionized, and I am getting emails to enroll in 403b... I am confused if I do both? I am coming from a non-unionized position, and I wonder if i can roll this over to my pension plan?? Thanks.....
  12. I just moved to NYC from a state where NPs are independent, no collaborative agreement needed..To new york NPs, are you able to have your own panel of patients?? I noticed back in my home state there's a pressure to do DNP...I don't feel that here in NY.
  13. Hi I'm about to start my first np job as well as start an online dnp program. Am I stretching myself too thin? On one hand I feel pressured to get my dnp asap as some schools have already eliminated their masters np program, making dnp as the entry level degree. I also want to be on par with the emerging dnp graduates. On the other hand, I feel like I should just work only for my first year in the job as there is a steep learning curve... how was it like for you working as an np and doing the dnp program? I worked as an RN throughout my np studies, but being an np entails more responsibility and accountability....
  14. So I accepted a job in New York but realized my post masters dnp program does not have an agreement with New York in doing clinical in the state...however, I can take the lecture classes but trouble may come when I have to begin my capstone.....I will have to do my capstone in another state instead of my workplace. My clinical won't start until after one year in the program. Anyone in the same position? Any advice?
  15. Has anyone undergone residency for NPs? How was your experience with this?
  16. I have a co worker who's an np, but still works as an rn at the hospital. She's not quite happy with her np experience...anyone knows of people who have an np degree, but are in jobs that don't require it? What are their reasons? Thanks
  17. I've been in an np program primary care for a year now...I'm not sure if I want to be an np anymore...I'm really excited about research but found out the curriculum doesn't have much courses on this...I'm not so thrilled with just direct care...can I be an NP and work as a research nurse or am I wasting my time staying in the NP program? I saw research nurse positions at my hospital and they all look so interesting, but the hours are 9 to 5 making it hard to study part time... i wish I waited before enrolling into the np program...any advice? Thanks...
  18. I've had interest in public health and research...
  19. I didn't have a lot of money to afford med school...now as a nurse, im glad I'm not a doctor..too much responsibility
  20. I wish I was a great nurse but I'm not. I realize I can be good but I can never be great... i excelled at school but I'm not excelling at work. Maybe I'm going thru reality shock. I've been a nurse for over a year...and...I feel like I'm not good at bedside. I have a passion for nursing but I just don't have it....I also get frustrated...working hard then patients, doctors and worst fellow nurses get mad at me when I really tried hard. I feel guilty because I hate complaining, but here I am....I left home to work and go to grad school at a different state. I go home lonely..I've had no social support here...I got everything I wanted, but I'm not living up to it....I have an option to move back home and go to grad school full time to get a non bedside position in healthcare...or I can continue staying here and prove to myself I can do this..... im in my mid 20s...I'm in a top grad program to be an NP, but I'm not sure about it anymore...ive been interested in public health and research..but i dont know how to tap into it...any advice? What would you do?
  21. how do you manage? do you work nights? I currently 'rotate,' working days and nights 40 hours/week. right now, im just in the theory part of the MSN program, but I have been advised to just work part time during clinical---which I cant see myself doing at this point. thanks
  22. working for a year now in a busy med surg unit....I knew nursing is hard and busy...but I am still overwhelmed...there are so many situations that makes one prone to mistakes, and I already made them...an experienced nurse said she's made a lot as well......there are times I feel like I cant breathe.....so this is real nursing... is it the same for everyone? how do you deal when you get so busy, you're tired and get too many distractions but you have to keep going...any advice/tips? I compare myself to other nurses on the floor who seem to be doing much better. I am frustrated with my performance, but I still want to be a really good nurse if possible
  23. Ive been working for a year, and one of the things I realize--and hard to admit--is I will make mistakes (which I already have)... I recently made another one, which made me physically sick. It was a busy morning with a lot of calls. in the middle of all these, a transporter came..I ended up sending a pt to a swallow study before surgery....so the procedure was unnecessarily delayed. I was so mad at myself... how do you deal with the mistakes you've made?
  24. ive been working in a med surg floor for a year now, and I feel frustrated...recently I had a tough shift....a patient yelled at me..it was a very busy shift, and I got behind some tasks and med administration. our pharmacy was running slow..next thing..two doctors were upset with me because I was behind... this made me really upset because I usually do things on time..it was a really tough shift with 2 difficult discharges and admissions.the thing is, I didnt know how to defend myself or frame my response..i just said 'sorry'. it was awkward running into these people in the hallways. we usually greet each other. now they just ignore me. I worked really hard that day and I feel powerless. I had no control of my time, no control of when meds get to the floor, nobody cares when you manage to keep things safe despite being subject to chaos and lots of pressure....what keeps you in nursing? I got my dream of working at a hospital and I am depressed
  25. I was really excited to start grad school, but now I am anxious...I have been working for a year, but I still feel new. There's just a lot to learn on the floor. I am a full time RN. I am going to take two online courses. One is philosophy in nursing that entails some group assignments, while the other is statistics which of course has quizzes and tests.. By the end of September, I will be trained to become charge nurse... I need to keep a certain grade to qualify for the educational benefits...I am also quite a perfectionist during my undergrad, and I will most likely be the same here has anyone been in this situation? Should I drop a course or get a feel for it first? advice greatly appreciated thanks!
