How to become a clinical nurse researcher
i had no research experience and just kept applying until I was offered a job. I agree that most jobs say that experience is required but don't let that keep you from applying. are you near a major cancer center? (memorial sloan kettering, MD anderson etc)? those big centers usually have openings so give it a shot ?

Is school nursing stressful?
I am thinking about school nursing and was wondering if you would consider it 'stressful' on a daily basis ( besides medical emergencies)? I have 12 years varied experience and the last two jobs have been very stressful ( doctors rushing to get pt to OR, very time sensitive situations etc) and I am looking for something that is not stressful on a daily basis. I can handle being busy and working hard but without the pressure cooker sensation. I am thinking of shadowing a school nurse if I can to get a better idea of ' a day in the life of..'. I also have 3 elementary- school aged kids so also having a similar schedule is enticing.thanks for any insight!!

Problems changing specialty after school nursing
I am thinking about school nursing but had a question about finding a job after school nursing. Do you have any problems changing specialties after? If I work as a school nurse for a while then decide to go back to beside, will I have a hard time getting a job in acute care or research for example? I have 12 years of acute care experience already. Thanks in advice!

Online versus state school?
Hello, I am looking into getting my MSN in education and my manager recommended Aspen University. My concern is getting a job afterward and having a hard time since my degree is online from Aspen. Is this a concern? Or is it worth it to pay more and go to a state school? As a BSN, I have found that it doesn't matter what school you got your BSN degree from and I would rather not pay more if in the end a MSN from Aspen Uni. is the same as a MSN from a state university in Texas. Thanks in advance!

RN pay for Houston hospitals
Hi, So TMC has many hospitals including Memorial Hermann, Houston Methodist, CHI St. Luke's, MD Anderson, Texas Children's, VA, Ben Taub, and Women's hospital of texas. Most of those hospitals have satellite sites in the surrounding suburbs. Most have Magnet status in TMC. As for salary, I'm guessing low to mid $30s/hr? As for places to live, do you want suburbs? city? Some popular suburbs I'm familiar with are Sugar Land, Katy, Cypress, Pearland, Missouri City to south and southeast of Houston. Check out the houston city-data forum page. not sure what COL is good luck and PM me with specific questions if you want.

houston hospital rn benefits question
I know for sure Memorial Hermann and Houston Methodist require a monthly contribution to medical / dental insurance. Maybe MD anderson or the public Harris county system pays 100%, not sure

Help getting into research nursing...
I am a RN (BSN) with 11 years of experience in med/surg and most recently ambulatory surgery. I am looking for a specialty change and have always been interested in research/clinical trials. In the past, whenever I saw RN research positions they always required experience. Is there anything I can do now to help me get into the field? Any class or certification? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Multiple Offers in Houston/ Relocating
Yes, you will not make as much as you did in NYC. I took a $5/hr pay cut (worked in NYC) but remember there is no state or city tax in Houston so that softens the blow. How long have you been a nurse?

Multiple Offers in Houston/ Relocating
Hi, what is the tuition reimbursement like at MD Anderson? I know at Memorial Hermann it is $5k a year and $4K at Houston Methodist....

Multiple Offers in Houston/ Relocating
Where are you relocating from? Are all of the positions in the Med Center? Where you live and the commute may be a factor to consider. I have heard mixed things about HCA facilities in other cities.

Austin Jobs New graduate nurse
The two big systems in Austin are Seton and St. David's. Seton has a nurse residency program for new grads you could look into. There is also Baylor Scott and White which is smaller. good luck!

New York RN moving to Houston- tips and recommendations please
I, too, am moving to the Houston area next year and this is what I've learned so far: The two biggest systems in the Houston area that have the highest employee satisfaction are Memorial Hermann and Houston Methodist. There are other systems out there (don't know much about them) but these are the ones I've heard the most about. MD Anderson is also great to work for but they are on a hiring freeze right now. Memorial Hermann is having a recruiting event in NYC 2/27-3/1 . If you can make it, I think it would be helpful for you. I went last year and it was very informative: RN Hiring Event February 27-March 1 at Memorial Hermann Health System Schools are also important for us and most suburbs have a 30-40 minute commute to downtown Houston where the Medical Center is located. Because traffic and commuting is such a concern, many people say finding out where you want to live first is crucial and then base your work around that location. The two systems I mentioned above have hospitals throughout the Houston area. The biggest suburbs that I've heard of are Katy, Sugar Land, Pearland (to the West, Southwest and South of Houston). There are others the northwest and North but I don't know anything about them). City-data has forums which are super helpful if you haven't checked them out already: Houston Forum - Relocation, Moving, General and Local City Discussions - City-Data Forum good luck!

Experienced ER Nurse transplant to Houston
where are you moving from? I know Memorial Hermann has recruiting events in NYC and Chicago (next month) so if you can make to one of those , that would be helpful. I think since you have experience and certifications you won't have too much trouble finding a job.I know that Memorial Hermann and Houston Methodist are the two biggest systems that I've heard good things about and that have the most facilities in the Houston area. Good luck!

Is MD Anderson hiring?
Hi, Is MD Anderson hiring nurses? I've been looking at their website for the past few months and there are only two positions posted. Is there a hiring freeze?

Questions about working at MD Anderson...
Hi! I am looking into moving to Houston next summer and I am very interested in working at MD Anderson. I have 11 years of experience (outpatient and inpatient) and have heard great things about MD Anderson but I have some questions about working there. If anyone could answer any of the following, I would greatly appreciate it :) 1- what is the parking situation like? Do you have to use a shuttle to an offsite lot or is there one onsite? what is the monthly cost for parking? Are there van pools from Southwest suburbs? 2- what time do 12 hr shifts start and end? Do you hit a lot of traffic commuting? specifically from the Southwest suburbs? 3- when do benefits (medical specifically) start once you begin working? Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!
