I am submitting all my papers today as well. I had to add another recommendation from an APRN I work with. I only had 3 Recs prior with our unit intensivist as the 3rd person. Luckily, I got info from the grad admissions manager that our unit intensivist recommendation is only "additional". If anyone else did the same thing as well, you still have a few days left.

thank you for the great insight,guys. Double Helix, I will try utilize your language so I can build trust with my patients as far electronic charting. I find that in older patient population groups, this is an issue as like me, they have to get accustomed to the "new" way of doing things. Some of these old folks always have the snarkiest comments like, "here comes the ice cream truck" (meaning the WoWs) and scanning makes them feel like a cereal box. Of course, you are all right, there is always resistance to any new technology. I'm looking forward to getting electronic charting incorporated in my practice. Thanks for all the tips. If you think of any additional tips on how you organize your time between direct patient care, BCMA and computerized charting please PM me. We use SCM/Allscript at work. Part of the difficulty might also be related to the system we use so if any one of you uses it currently, I appreciate your insight on how I can take care of my patients while optimizing documentation

I work at a high acuity unit in NYC. We recently shifted to electronic charting. As much as it was an inevitable move as apparently it has numerous benefits over paper charting, I find that bringing the clunky WOWs (workstation on wheels) at the bedside can be tedious when space is limited and most of all I feel personally that I lose the connection with my patient as I stare at my computer screen most occasions instead of looking at them as we are conversing. In an increasingly electronic world, I feel like nursing is unfortunately less about building rapport it's more about documenting what was done at the bedside. Does anyone feel this way? How do you organize your time so you are able to maintain good "old fashioned" connection with your patients and their families while at the same time satisfying the increasingly convoluted electronic charting?

Texas Nursing Jurisprudence Exam
took the test recently. i did not need to study before as you can check the answers from the dropdown menu of resources provided. the challenging part was reminding myself to get back to the test screen every 15 min to input identifier info. these are questions you are asked at the beginning of the test that will help the system ensure that you are taking the test and not somebody else (?). the questions are generally helpful to bedside practice and choices are quite straightforward. just remember to fill in your "identifiers" every 15 min or so. otherwise, as the test says repeatedly at the beginning "you will fail"...that being said...good luck to everyone taking it!

New York RN moving to Houston- tips and recommendations please
Thank you Mmarinas for this helpful advice about Sugarland. I've been reading so much information about Houston the last few weeks. I'm truly excited to discover the lifestyle that Houston will offer our family. Sugarland looks to be a viable location for MH Southwest as most properties we looked at online were about 35 min away. Also, the school district impressed me in terms of reviews and ratings. The other area we are interested in was Katy. This interest was mostly for the highly rated school district as well. The tie breaker for us would be the issue of flooding and also, the overall family-friendliness of the area. Flooding worries me quite a bit as my husband and I don't have any support system in this area as of the moment. Family friendliness is important as we would like to raise our child in a good social environment as much as possible. We come from a small town in NJ where families look out for each other and check on each other. Would you know offhand of any areas that are prone to flooding? Also, what's your best advice on looking for family friendly neighborhoods in Houston? Thank you again for your time and input.

Bullied by preceptor!!
I agree with HouTx, bullying should not be ignored. Precepting is an opportunity to support and educate. It's a privilege that also has financial compensation behind it in most hospitals. If it were me, I would go through appropriate channels so she never gets the chance to bully anyone else. After all, it is in the best interest of the management as well to retain RNs that they spend so much to train. Bullying is a loss for everyone. It damages morale,accelerates employee burnout and also has been shown by repeated studies to significantly diminish safety at the bedside.

Thank you or responding. I got a job offer from memorial Hermann southwest. I gathered that it's close to sugarland area. I'm hoping to visit in May to get the overall feel of the area and see for myself Sugarland that I've heard so many great things about as far as their school system, ease of commute to hospital and such. Thank you Hou Tx for taking the time to answer my questions. It clarified a lot of our uncertainties as far as the benefits/risks of renting vs home buying. I will look at short term lease options then as I think for us it is financially more reasonable to buy a home when we find the right location for us. I agree with you in saying that it will be more pragmatic to do that after we relocate to Houston. My husband and I will visit Houston in May as I plan to attend AACNs NTI conference. I am CCRN And CSC certified. I'm hopeful that this + my diverse critical care exposure can help me negotiate a reasonable relocation package. During the NtI I'm hoping to network with more Critical care RNs from Houston to get more insight on hospitals in Houston. Thanks again for your valuable insight. I'm hopeful that Houston will be a good match for our family's goals and lifestyle.
