looking FNP Preceptorship advice San Diego
Hello everyone, I am also in a similar boat to you all. I have been an RN for the past 4 years in the South Bay on a PCU/DOU floor and a few other floors. I am just beginning my first clinical rotation and our school also seems to be struggling to accommodate the number of students in our program needing a primary care rotation. In fact, I'm already thinking I should be planning ahead to look for a peds and OB/Gyn rotation. I had one possible lead which fell through and I just left a message for my own MD to see if he knows anyone I could go with before I get too far behind this semester. I am a member of the CANP as well. I wish it was easier to find a preceptor and I will definitely post if I get any leads as to which providers are willing to accept NP students.

MSN/FNP program at Azusa Pacific University Spring 2014
Congrats Miaamor :). I am sure the programs will be pretty similar so hopefully we can still share tips. @ss094: I did not get interviewed. I have two coworkers who applied last semester and both got in. One was interviewed and the other was not so I guess it just depends on what they're looking for.

MSN/FNP program at Azusa Pacific University Spring 2014
Hello everyone :), I just found out I got into the MSN/FNP program at Azusa Pacific University here in San Diego in Spring 2014. I'm wondering if anyone else will be starting then and was hoping we could chat and/or give each other support as we go through the program!

jobs & no jobs
I'm a new grad but was very fortunate to get a job right away. I went out of my way to make a portfolio with my resume, cover letter, title page, mission statement, certifications and licenses, etc. I even had business cards made after I read about it. I joined a few organizations and started getting more certifications in the mean time including wound care and advanced IV care. Keep up your skills and good luck...things will start improving!

Sharp Summer 2011 New Grad Program
The recruiter got back to me and said she thinks the manager will be making decisions this week. She called me this afternoon and offered me a job so I am ecstatic :). Good luck everyone!

SCRIPPS New Graduate Nurse Program August 2011
I guess so. I was hoping they would tell us since typically people know what department they are going in to interview for. I was just wondering because I know scenario questions will be very different depending on which department the interview is with.

SCRIPPS New Graduate Nurse Program August 2011
I did not have my license when I applied, however, I passed the boards last week and have my license now. I went to the University of Oklahoma's accelerated BSN program here in SD. How do we know which department we are interviewing with? We just have to guess that it is one of our top three choices that we listed?

SCRIPPS New Graduate Nurse Program August 2011
I also have an interview on Monday at 10:30. Three of my classmates have interviews on Monday as well but at 8 and 9. I can't even remember which departments I selected but I think one was PCU....

Sharp Summer 2011 New Grad Program
To everyone who applied for the Chula Vista new grad residency program, I went ahead and e-mailed the recruiter today to find out when we will be notified of whether we were accepted into the program or not. If I don't hear by Tuesday I will call and post what I hear.

San Diego job outlook (determines Assoc vs Bach RN degree)
Hi Kelly, I am a new grad RN currently living in SD. I was in OU's accelerated BSN program. It is true that the program is no longer offered. I have heard different things but in my opinion you should definitely get a BSN. Many hospitals prefer BSN candidates now to those with an associate's degree and many now state that they do give preferences to those candidates. I believe Point Loma also offers a second degree program or they did a few years ago. I can't answer most of your other questions at this time. However, the field for new grads is very competitive at the moment, especially in San Diego. Nurses do get paid more to work the night shift and most new grads will need to start out on the night shift initially. Many of my friends have had to relocate to find work and are thinking of coming back to SD after they get some experience. I have heard L&D can be difficult to get into at first, however, two of my classmates were able to get into Sharp March Birch right after graduation because they had senior preceptorships there so it can be done. Best of luck!

Sharp Summer 2011 New Grad Program
I still have not heard anything. Based on what I have been hearing/reading, they seem to be delayed. All I can think of is the manager must be swamped with catch up work post vacation...

Still no word from Chula Vista on my end either. I know the manager was on vacation until today so hopefully we hear in the next few days...

Sharp Summer 2011 New Grad Program
Hi SDchick, I had an interview on May 18th and asked the manager when she anticipated contacting applicants that they plan on hiring. She said she was going to be going out of town and would be notifying people around June 6th. I am not sure how long it will take them to contact everyone, though. Good luck! :)

I am planning to do the same. Do you know how many people they are taking for the residency program? Thanks for the heads up on the parking situation!

I also have a panel interview at Chula Vista on May 18th and have never had a nursing interview before. I just graduated on April 11th. Does anyone know what to anticipate? Good luck to all!

Need advice
Hi Daniela, Congrats on being done . I agree with the above poster. I also live in Southern California and just graduated a week ago. Things here are definitely intense and I am considering moving to a more rural area in Northern California where I think I may be able to get a nursing job. If you receive a job offer, I would definitely consider taking it. It is very hard to be away from family and friends, but you could always move back once you get one year of experience that most facilities desire. That is what I keep telling myself too in regards to moving. Plus, many of your classmates who stay may just be finding their first job here when you are close to having one year's worth of experience already. Best of luck! :)

New Grads and Resumes
Same here! I took a class over intersession where one of our assignments was to write a resume but we weren't really given any good examples of how to write a resume as second degree students.

University of Oklahoma-Accelerated BSN Program
Have you tried calling Ace? I believe they sell the patches for $2 or so. I just bought an extra set of scrubs there last night and they already had patches on them. However, I remember at open house some of the scrubs did not have patches and they just advised students to go over there and buy some.

Thanks for the info! It turned out that primarily only the people who read this blog saw that and dressed in the right manner lol.

University of Oklahoma-Accelerated BSN Program
I got my seasonal flu vaccine back in September from Vons in Scripps Ranch. I believe it was $25 or $30. If you can't find the seasonal flu vaccine at a public health clinic you may want to check that out because it still may be less than a doctor's visit.

University of Oklahoma-Accelerated BSN Program
I got my chicken pox titer at my doctor's office but I got all of my immunizations at the public health clinic off of Ruffin Rd. I am not sure if the public health office does titers or not but you could call and ask them. JBSD is right. I had the MMR titer done which I think I mentioned and my titer came back negative so I had to go back to the public health clinic to get an MMR booster.

University of Oklahoma-Accelerated BSN Program
I would go back to the public health clinic. I went to the one off of Ruffin Road but that website I posted in my previous post lists others that may be closer to wherever you are at. When I went to get the H1N1 vaccine there, they were offering the seasonal flu shot as well in either a nasal mist or in IM vaccination form. I went there to get my TB skin test, tetorifice shot, H1N1 shot, and an MMR booster because my titer didn't show me as immune to it. They also offer the chicken pox shot so you should be able to get everything you need done there. Each shot costs $10 so it's very reasonably priced too. Did you have the chicken pox as a child? If so (most of us born in the 80s or earlier did) all you need is a chicken pox titer showing you are immune instead of a chicken pox vaccine. You may want to look into that.

University of Oklahoma-Accelerated BSN Program
I just wanted to post this for anyone who hasn't gotten their H1N1 vaccination yet and may be interested in getting it. I was just going to get it at my doctor's office but I couldn't get an appointment there until next week so I actually got it on Monday at the public health office off of Ruffin Road. When I got there, the line was very short and it had just become FREE to everyone in the general public. I read in the news last night that the H1N1 vaccine is now available to everyone. I don't know if it's still free or not but at most it would be $10 because that's how much all of their vaccines are. Here is a link to an article that lists all of the public health clinics that offer the vaccine. http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/Portal/flu/H1N1vaccine.html
