  1. Nurse2011, I have been doing the ATI pratice questions online. The ones from the ATI website. I am stressing because we CANNOT graduate unless we pass this test. I am not sure if there is anything else I should be doing to prepare for this test. Thank you for the words of encouragement.
  2. This comment is the reason why I dont post on this site that often. Netglow if you didnt have an answer for my question than there was no reason for you to respond. I posted this question in the nurses section because I also wanted to know if the test helped with the Nclex RN exam. A STUDENT would not have taken this exam yet. I am aware that this section is for nurses because I am sure there are some YOUNG nurses or NEW nurses on here that are not too far removed from the stuff I am asking.
  3. Hello everyone, Did anyone have to take the ATI exam while you were in nursing school? If so, how did you prepare. I have been doing questions for sometime now but it doesnt seem to help much. My professors keeps stressing the whole "do 100 questions a night" thing but if I am not passing the tests how does this benefit me? Any suggestions anyone. Also for those who took this exam and passed it do you feel it helped with answering questions on the Nclex RN exam? Please someone help me. Test is scheduled for March 10 and I am pulling my hair out. I dont want to be bald by test day:):):)...Have to laugh to keep from crying:(:(
  4. Yes I graduate May of next year.
  5. When I started Coppin in 08 the Teas wasnt being given. The NET exam was the test to get into the program. Back then if you had a gpa of 3.25 of higher you were GUARANTEED acceptance into the program regardless of what you got on the exam. Since they have switched to the Teas I am not sure how they are doing things. I agree with others by saying Mr. Best and Mr. Boyd are the best and they will assist you in any questions you may have. I believe your chances are good as long as you pass the Teas exam. I dont think Coppin will lower their gpa requirements because they switched entrance exams so therefore....STUDY, STUDY, STUDY! I am sure you will do great....Coppin is a great school and I wish you well in all that you do...class of 2012:)
  6. Hello everyone, I am a second semester junior nursing student at a Maryland University. It seems like I am always reading about new nurses having a hard time finding employment. How beneficial is working as a PCT while you are in nursing school. Does that increase my chances of getting a job when I graduate? I really dont like the place I work for but if staying there would greater my chances of getting a job I have no problem with staying there. What do u think?
  7. These charts are a god send. I have been looking online for hours for a chart to help myself and my study group understand IV fluids and blood products and I stumbled upon this chart....Thank u so much.....It is very helpful.
  8. Hello everyone, What classes are needed to become an Lpn? I am in a BSN program and I work with a lot of Lpn's that are going back to school for their RN. I was surprised that most of them are taking the exact same classes I am taking for my BSN program. I hear them say I just finished taking Med Surg or I am about to take Patho. I was under the impression that in order to become a nurse whether Lpn or Rn these classes had to be completed already.
  9. I am a junior nursing student at Coppin and like someone said previously it has its ups and downs. I will tell u this, Coppin's nclex scores may be low BUT dont think its all because of the school. Nursing school is difficult and Coppin's program is no different. Coppin's professors make u work for everything and wont spoon feed u any information. The resources are there and if a student refuses to take full advantage of them he or she will definitely fail. Coppin is one of the easiest programs in Maryland to get into but it is hard to stay in if you dont put in the work. Every nurse I have come across that graduated from Coppin State were excellent nurses and knew their stuff.

Ok thanks everyone. Now I know.

I am a junior in nursing school and will not cover medications in depth until my fall semester. I work as a Tech at an acute care nursing facility and the other day my patient was asking for his pain medication. The nurse (an LPN) said she had to go find Alisha (an RN)....the RN came in to give him his medication which was Dilaudid IV. Why did the LPN need an RN to give this medication for her. Are there restrictions on meds that Lpn's can give. Im very curious.
  12. Can someone give me an easy acronym to remember the six rights of medication administration? I do well with acronyms.
  13. Hello everyone...Every year of nursing school for me is exciting like the semester before. The idea of becoming a registered nurse is a goal of mine that I am determined to accomplish. My daughter's medical background is what sealed the deal for me to become a nurse. She received a kidney transplant in 2003 at the age of 19 months and her nurses were the absolute best. I learned a lot about nursing while caring for my daughter who is doing great as of today. What made u know that nursing was for you and are u happy with the decision you made?
  14. Ok thanks everyone...the patient that was on the blood thinnner's blood ran so much i was unable to get a sample because it wouldnt clot it just ran like water. However I am new to this and hopefully I will get better with practice. Thanks again for everyone's input...it is greatly appreciated.
  15. OK thanks a lot. I thought we were doing something wrong.
  16. My study group and I are studying for our upcoming pharmacology test. We have to pass this test in order to continue with our fall semester. This one particular problem has us scratching our heads. The problem is....The physician orders three units of packed red blood cells to infuse over four hours. Each unit contains 386ml of blood. How many ml/hr will the client receive? Initially we said to 386ml / 4 hrs which gave us 96.5 ml/hr. However while going over this problem again we were wondering is the (three units of packed red blood cells) thrown in there to throw us off or should we multiply the 386ml by 3 to find the total volume? Can anyone assist us with this problem?
  17. Hello everyone I am a third year nursing student and a Patient Care Tech working at an area acute care facility. I have just recently started doing fingersticks and I would like to know is there some type of trick for getting blood from a person who doesnt wanna bleed or if they are on a blood thinner. I have had two instances where I needed the nurses help for a patient that refused to bleed. No matter how much i tried I couldnt get it. Another instance was a patient was on a blood thinner and I could not get enough of a sample to complete the test. I asked my nurse to do it and she was successful but told me it was a trick to it. I never got the opportunity to ask her what it is because I havent worked with this nurse since then....Any tips?????
  18. My study group in nursing school consists of 3 people. We study so well together and we learn well from each other. Anyway, this week is registration for clinicals for Med Surg and Patho. Everyone wants to get a good professor at a good time. Our biggest concern was that we are in the same class at the same time so we can continue our studies together. It all worked out fine until one of us couldnt register at the time as the other two because the system locked her out. So the following day we all made a mad dash to the school to register(AGAIN) hopefully finding a clinical site that has 3 openings with a decent professor. So we register, and shortly after that got word from a senior (WE ARE JUNIORS) that the times we picked should be avoided because we r giving ourselves extra work. So we register (AGAIN) praying that we can find ANOTHER site with 3 slots...We found one....3 slots left...We logged in together...at the exact same time and got our class...and to top it off we got a great professor...I love my study group...we r getting thru this journey together....THE JOY OF NURSING SCHOOL.
  19. Every schools curriculum is different. At the school I attend 2nd year we take Fundamentals, 3rd year its Med Surg, Patho, Maternity and Peds and 4th yr its Psych, Research, and Community Nursing....Good luck in school it will be challenging but as long as you study hard and stay focused you will succeed. By the way I will be a Junior starting Aug 30th.
  20. Woohooo!!!!!!Junior yr here we come. We have worked EXTREMELY hard to get to this point. I will be right with you studying late night and drinking way too much coffee. Our study group is "the absolute best" and together we will pull this one out no problem. Yes it will be hard but we will succeed. Next year this time we will be seniors and on our way to graduation and it is all an awesome feeling that I wouldnt trade for the world.
  21. Hello everyone I have been working at my job for the past 6 yrs as a GNA. I am currently a junior in nursing school. I was just offered a position as a nursing student at a nearby hospital, my current job is a nursing home. It would be impossible for me to work both jobs because at my current job I work every weekend and this job would require every other weekend, 12 hr shifts. My dilemma is that the new job allows u to work as many hours that would like to during the summer along with exposure to different skills that I would never be exposed to at a nursing home and allow you to go prn when the semester starts again. In order to work this job I would have to resign from my current job. I know that the new job is a great opportunity for me but I am feeling some kinda of way thinking about leaving my current job. I am not sure if its because I have been there for so long or am I just second guessing myself on what I should do? What do you think?
  22. I am currently a CNA and I am about to start my Junior year of nursing school. My professors constantly tells us whatever u know as a GNA, CNA, tech, etc...get rid of it because you are moving into nurse world. Everything I am learning is totally different then what I have been taught as a CNA because it is within a different scope of practice. So to answer your question the experience you get as a CNA is not the same as what you will be learning in nursing school. However getting comfortable with the healthcare setting could possibly help you out in the long run and maybe guarantee you a job. You never know!
  23. Wow! Sorry you didnt pass your class but I am sure you will pass next time. I am taking Med Surg in the fall and I am very nervous about it. I havent failed anything but this pass Spring I was worried if I passed my Health Promotion class. I knew I didnt give it my all and didnt like the feeling of not being sure I passed the class. Anyway I ended up with 2 A's and 3 B's for the semester. Good luck I am sure you will do just great. Owning up to your mistakes really helps put things into perspective.
  24. I am a CNA and I work with some of the best nurses ever BUT i work with a couple not so great ones also. I work the night shift so a lot of the nurses I work with are knocked out sleep during the shift. Thats a whole different issue. Anyway, they say nurses look out for nurses and this post clearly shows that. However, I am sure the possiblility that she works with a lazy nurse is valid. I am on the outside looking in being in nursing school and a CNA. So I have no idea exactly all the work that nurses do but in every career choice their are a few lazy ones.
  25. I was told be several people on a previous post that I need to have tougher skin in the workplace. Is this something you have always had (for those of u who have it) or something you acquired due to working in the healthcare field. I agree I do and I need to know what I can do to toughen up the skin.
