LPN in BC planning to move to SK to work
Hello all...just to update you finally I got a job here in Calgary 9 months ago in LTC and I'm loving it. It's totally different than working in hospital. I have 35 residents to give meds with no personal care at all. Less stress than my previous job in hospital. My employer considered my seniority hours in BC and I got the top rate right away! The rates are very competitive with AHS. I heard LTCs here have different wages or lesser than in AHS but the place I'm working right now have the same rates in AHS. Managers and staff are very nice, very respectful, frequent education services update and they do send RNs/LPNs for education in AHS's office. Even if I only have a regular part time job I almost working fulltime due to many shifts being offered especially night shift which gives you extra/more $ due to the night differential which is higher than in BC.

LPN in BC planning to move to SK to work
Hi march girl, Thanks for your message. I was an RCA before and became an LPN 7 years ago and working in the hospital. Yes, I noticed that lots of new LPNs who did their preceptorships in my workplace finding themselves having difficulties being hired as soon as they graduated and got their licenses. In fact, one of new LPNs got hired in Calgary on fulltime basis right away. One of the reasons I'm planning to move to SK is their pay rate which is now $30+/hour compared here in BC the starting rate is $24+/hour also the lower cost of living. Regards.

Getting Stuck with Night Shift.
I love working nights in hospital. I work 90% nights, 10% days no problem at all. Maybe it depends how your body will accept it or some people really don't sleep in days or really couldn't stay working nights. But for me, since I'm a night person I love working nights. Yeah, it's true in some places that if you're new you probably will be assigned in nights seniority staff gets the choice first.

LPN Starting Salary
hi is lvn and lpn a different thing? here in canada we only have lpn no lvn. thanks.

LPN Starting Salary
Hi here in BC, Canada the starting wage now is C$23.74/hour. I'm working in a hospital either the same rate or much lower when you are working in a private facilities (nursing homes, assisted living, etc.) since all hospitals here are under government. When you work in hospitals here is higher than in private facilities.

I have never been nasty to a student until now!!!
Anyway, in our unit we always have students. We love :heartbeatstudents b/c it's additional help also in our part. They're learning and at the same time we get help .

I have never been nasty to a student until now!!!
If the student is expecting a very important call he/she should inform the staff. Put the cellphone on silent-vibrate mode. There's a time to use it, i.e. during breaks or say "excuse me I need to answer the call" and then go to a staff room or inside the toilet for privacy. If the student is showing this inappropriate act what more if he/she already an RN.:icon_roll

Question re Sliding Scale Insulin
Thanks ninfanp. That's the reason why I'm a little bit confuse. So the right answer should be (b) check for breathing and a pulse?

Question re Sliding Scale Insulin
I have never had this experience before as LPN but for me I will check first for breathing and pulse then his blood sugar and if the breathing/pulse is so weak and BS is lower the limit I will notify the charge RN and she/he will decide for a code blue. In our unit RN will call for a code blue. This question is part of the course for LPN who will start sliding scale insulin admin for the very first time. I need your opinion please which is the best answer......thanks.

Question re Sliding Scale Insulin
Mr. Brown is on sliding scale insulin as well as NPH insulin. His morning dose of NPH is 60 units. At 1130 he was given 10 units of Toronto insulin. You have just been informed by the CNA that Mr. Brown did not eat any of his lunch today and is looking pretty lethargic. You enter Mr. Brown's room to find him slumped over in bed and unresponsive. What should you do? a) call a code blue b) check for breathing and a pulse c) check his blood sugar d) all of the above

Can an LPN from Canada work as LPN in USA?
yes, before October 2004 it's CAD22.02 (14.5% tax: GST + PST) after that they reduced it to CAD21.14 in BC (14% tax) while in Alberta prices are cheaper (you only have 1 tax) . You know what I'm thinking to move in Calgary or anywhere in Alberta lots of people from BC are moving there for job (???)...so eventhough it's only CAD15 at start still we can afford to live a happy life. Right now I'm in the process of having my papers being evaluated by CLPNA and they want me to take Physical Assessment Course first bec. they said here in BC it's integrated in one of the courses where in Alberta it's separate course (huh!) so I need to finish that before I could work there. Any tip the best place to work in Alberta?

Can an LPN from Canada work as LPN in USA?
I would like informations about working as LPN in USA. What's the best states to work as LPN with good pay? I'm a fulltime LPN here in BC Canada and the starting salary here in BC is CAD$21.14/hr and wondering if there's Canadian LPNs already working in USA. Where should I go (association or College of LPNs)? Will somebody help me to get the list of LPN associations or colleges where I could inquire for the requirements? Are there many hospitals hiring LPNs or most facilities (LTC) hire LPNs? Is working in agency better? Thanks.

What's the difference of LPNs in BC, Canada and USA?
Hi I'm a new fulltime fullscope LPN here in BC, Canada and found it we don't get any help from RCA-resident care attendant (the same as CNA in USA) while RNs have 1-2 RCAs. LPNs here have 6 pts in day shft (7a-3p) and 8 pts in 3p-11p shift...we give meds, do the pt's care, distribute/collect trays, taking Dr's orders, etc. While RNs have 11-14 pts with 1-2 RCAs help. LPNs taking care of stabled pts only while RNs those pts who are in need much attention (critical). I'm working in TCU-Transitional Care Unit where pts already don't qualified to be in acute care and they're waiting for their placement in facilities or going back to their homes. We don't do IV theraphy (we have IV Theraphy Nurse), RNs will administer and take pts with IVs, antibiotic or other meds in IVs, we don't draw blood RNs do.
