I like what she does, but the OT programs are very competitive. She suggested becoming a PA.

Medical Assistant in Hospital??
Ok. We all know MA and nursing is not the same. The pay is not the same... and the education is NOT the same. BTW, MAs are only trained, therefore, a monkey can do that job. I need your advice! I've been working as a CNA for two years for a registry. I'm trained as a CNA & MA. I've been offered an MA position where I'll make .80 less than my CNA...but I'll be incharge of administering TB tests. The MA position offers medical, dental and retirement benefits...and CNA doesn't. The CNA is just vitals and night checks...and I'm almost ready to start the RN program, which one should I take?

Advice on Switching Careers Eventually to become PA
Actually, some programs require some kind of direct patient experience. CNA is the perfect way to get it. Medical assistant is a bit harder to find a job...and the training is longer than the CNA. Save your energy for the PA. You may check out the Red cross about their 22-day CNA class. I did mine there. Try the CC, or ROPs in your area to see if the have the program. Anyway, the PA is a 2+ -years program. San Joaquin College has a great one as well as some schools near you. All programs require Ana, physi and Micro before you start. PAs work in clinics, hospitals, Dr. offices. They can assist the doctors during surgery and prescribe meds.

Ever worry about your family's safety?
The only people you'll probably have a problem with: the other nurses. I find that the inmates are mostly respectful. The people you work with are a big problem. I once had a doctor ask me to clean his desk... what?

Typical Medications Distributed
Mary, inmates don't have access to anything sharp, pointy, hard...ect. Most meds that you'll come in contact will be oral. You're also required to keep count of all your sharps...and anything missing is to notified immediately.

2.35 GPA too low for Acc Bacc BSN Program?
I'm at the other end of the spectrum. I graduated with a B.A. in Psychology with a 3.9 and when I took my nursing prereqs I got "Cs" in a & p... and an "A" in Micro. I don't know what to do at this point.

BLS vs. CPR/AED??
The BLS is 5minutes longer and most of the time is good for 2 years. The Red Cross's is good for a years...and usually $25. Most hospitals prefer the BLS from the American Heart Association.

Be Aware: Don't Go into Nursing
Why would she want to join a nursing forum when she's an occupational therapist? I never log out of my account...and told her about all the people going into nursing.

Be Aware: Don't Go into Nursing
I let the owner of house use my account to post. Her brother and his girlfriend graduated in 2009 from a great RN program. They haven't found a job and since they all come to hang out here she's very upset. She's an occupational therapist and works with a school district with preschoolers. Indeed, she has a cool job! She says that the district is hurting for occupationla therapists everybody is going into nursing.

I am so sick....
There seven people in my house, and we all use the same account to post. The owner of the house is an accupational therapist whose brother and his girlfriend graduated from an great RN program in 2009. She's tired of them sitting home with no jobs, so she posted one of those threads.

Be Aware: Don't Go into Nursing
I started my prereqs with my roommate and some of his classmates. They help me through Anatomy and Physio. I graduated from OT and my employer had a 60k job waiting for me. I also work for a hospital every other eve. I get frustrated when I ask my friend in hr to hire them...and they say that if I train them they will. They know I can't.

How many New Grads from 2009 still don't have jobs?
My roommate is the unemployed. Well, I now have two. They both graduated from a great RN program. They're now working at the school where I work as an occupational therapist. I'm trying to get them in the hospital where I work in the eves. Anyway, hr told me that if I trian them, they would hire them. LOL!

Be Aware: Don't Go into Nursing
Why don't you go and respond to ALL the post where the new grads can't find a job...and tell them not to discourage you. When you're all done come back and tell me. Begin with the home page if you may.

Be Aware: Don't Go into Nursing
How am I to be encouraging. I see my roommate depressed all the time for what they were required to do to get into the nursing program...and not have a job. I hear hi's classmate cry at night because they can't even buy clothes because they don't have a job. I had to ask the school were I work to give at least two of them a teacher's aide job. I don't feel like supporting this person, but I would hate to see him homeless.

Be Aware: Don't Go into Nursing
...so that you don't come back crying to the site when you graduate, I'm posting this. I'm an OT ...and love my job working with preschoolers in a school district. You're no competition. I just hate to see my roommate and his classmates with no job since they graduated in 2009.

Be Aware: Don't Go into Nursing
Tell me what other career takes a year where a hospital needs to take a nurse from her patients to come and hold the newbe's hand until she/he can be trusted? The hospital is paying two salaries for less patients. It's expensive to train nursing grads. That's why they want experienced nurses!

Be Aware: Don't Go into Nursing
The economy will probably pick up but not enough to absorb the new grads. You think there will be more and more new grads each year? Yes. More than jobs available? yes. 3 times that amount in 5 years. You think old new grads will ahve a shot at these jobs in 5 years? Probably not. Just look at the statistics of how many nursing grads there are each year across the country getting licensed in each state. Its quadrupled since 5 years ago. There is no nursing shortage.

Struggles with finding a nursing job....
I have a roommate who graduated on 2009. She and 75% of her classmates haven't found a job. Go to the newgrad NPs they're also having a hard time finding a job even with years of experience. Just be aware of the situation outside.

New Grad RN no job thinking of being a CNA
You can apply to an unlicense position. Once you became an RN it cancels/voids the other certificates, or license.s

What would I do?
Our own human kind...and lets not forget the prisoners who make other prisoners their prisoners. Something along those lines. I can't think/spell tonight. I had a long day in corrections. I just can't seem to let go. I took some days off ...and even thought of going back to my old job at a school district, but I miss corrections... so I returned today. Lots of love
