Ok, got it. Thanks for your responses. Yes I've read the FAQ, but it didn't really answer my questions. I've been advised to read on the Canadian healthcare delivery system (where can I get sources for this when most of our books here are centered on the NCLEX?) and even watch YouTube videos to review for the skills. Do you think this is advisable? We do have a skills lab in my school, but I still feel that won't help much. I applied in British Columbia, by the way. I am sure there will be procedures/skills that would be largely different in the Philippines and in Canada, that's expected, but will it be okay if my SEC comes and I'd have no idea on how to do some things? Since they're just assessing my competence anyway right? If I'm found not meeting the standards and advised on the courses that I need to take, do I have to take those courses in the same university where I'll take the SEC, or do I have a choice where in BC I could take them?

Hi. I've already scheduled my SEC Assessment for the last week of July. I am only required to take the Medical/Surgical Nursing parts, which would take 2 days. I have a traveller's visa. Any tips from those who have taken the SEC before? I have no clue how to prepare for it. What books did you use and where can I get them in Manila? Is there a review class offered for CRNE? Also, I've been out of the nursing practice for a year now. Any suggestions how I can be up to speed with the expectations for the skills part? As you know, employment and even training for nurses in the Philippines is quite difficult to come by. Hence, it's hard to practice in the actual hospital setting. Also, after the SEC, what should I expect? Can I start looking for a job even if the results aren't released yet? What's next after the SEC? I plan to fly to Vancouver mainly for the assessment, maybe a few days to go sightseeing, then go home in just a couple of weeks. Is that advisable, or can I wait until the results? How do I become a member of PNA? I didn't become a member when I registered after passing the boards, but the hospital that I will be working at is requiring me to submit a recent PNA membership card. Where exactly is their office?

If it makes you feel more reassured that NCLEX is the same regardless of states, I took my exam for CA licensing in CA, but I had a question in the exam regarding the appropriate nursing diagnosis for a person living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I didn't quite get the question. If NCLEX were based on the state you're applying for, then it wouldn't be asking me about LA now, would it?

I too am a California NCLEX passer without an SSN. My questions are: 1. What states would issue a license without SSN? I only know of VT and NM, but are there others? 2. I'm interested to obtain a license in NY. Does NY require SSN before they issue a license? 3. If No, how do I got about applying for licensure? I understand I would have to ask California BRN to forward my NCLEX results, but is that all I have to do? This is what's written in the NY app packet, and my understanding is that I'll just have to ask CA BRN to forward my credentials. VERIFYING YOUR APPLICATION CREDENTIALS To ensure authenticity of credentials, the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions requires evidence of your compliance with each licensure requirement directly from the organization where you met the requirement (e.g., school, testing agency, licensing authority, certifying board, hospital, employer, etc.). These records and documents must bear an original (not photocopied) signature of the official who maintains the records and stamp or seal of the institution where the credentials are maintained. Does this mean I would ask CA BRN to forward my results as well as my other requirements (like transcripts, etc.)? Do I need to take CGFNS or no need, since I already passed NCLEX and the rest of my credentials will be forwarded? 4. Lastly, if I ask CA to forward my credentials to NY, will I lose my application in CA? Thanks.

To answer the thread title, statistically, less repeat test takers make it the second time. From NCSBN, the passing rate is around 90% for 2009 (so far), while for repeat takers the passing rate is about 53%. That's for US educated nurses. It's much lower for internationally educated. But hey, a lot of people on here passed their second, third, fourth, etc. time so don't lose hope. I agree with Sliverdragon102, take your time. Don't rush to resit if you don't feel fully prepared.

Passed with 75 questions. It took about an hour and a half. My usual time for that number of items is about an hour but I took my time to read the questions and choices thrice in the actual NCLEX. I had 2 math questions. I also had about 5 SATA and 1 drag-and-drop. I could have sworn the drag-and-drop question was a test question because it came in the middle of really difficult questions and it was so easy. :chuckle

I graduated with a 4-year bachelor's degree (BSN) and just passed NCLEX. Based on that Nurse Memo linked above, wouldn't that place me under A. General Requirements for H-1B Classification in a Specialty Occupation, rather than under B. Advanced Practice Nurses? It only says there that you need three years of specialized training and/or work experience for each year of college-level training that you lack if you do not meet the degree equivalent. But it says on Page 2 that the employer can meet regulatory requirements by showing that a bachelor’s or higher degree (or its equivalent) is normally the minimum requirement for entry into the position, etc.

I only studied the Saunders 4th edition CD. I finished all 4,214 questions by doing around 250-300 questions per day (500 on weekends) for a span of 3 weeks. I passed with 75 questions. Since you have more time than I did, you can do less per day and add other resources. My plan of attack then was to do the Study Mode, 1 to 2 Content Area per day.

Can a foreign nurse qualify for an H1b even without experience? What if there is an employer who is willing to hire inexperienced nurses, will an H1b visa be granted? Or it doesn't matter if you have an employer, since Immigration says you don't qualify? Where can I read more about the qualifications for H1b specific to nurses?

My exam was a lot like yours! I took the exam July 13. I only had 75 questions too, with lots of Peds and hepatitis questions. I had 2 med calculations (my 2nd item was med calculation!), 1 drag-and-drop, and about 5 SATA's. There were several Cancer questions too. I did the trick and I got the pop-up. I'm in CA so I'm still waiting for the results.
