Actually there has been a lot of press about the use of IPads in healthcare. I believe its a hospital in Ottawa that created a program to help in the protection of patient privacy that several people have pointed out. Also there are a lot of new white coats coming out with pockets made to fit the IPad.

Thats exactly what I thought when I read it, there a long enough time frame to know.

Great Job. Hopefully all is well with that young lady. On another note I must say this post was well written. Your very good at writing. I hope you don't mind the suggestion that you look into writing on the side if you have already not. I've read a couple of books by nurses and doctors detailing their jobs but none were as good.....so anyways great job.

I say wear it up for your own protection in terms of safety. Imagine the pain when a confused or upset patient yanks on your hair. Think of the neck pain and the headache that last for days after.

No I think they meant that NP are smart "nurses". Key word is nurse, they probably don't believe that a NP has the skill set to diagnosis and prescribe. They meant that a NP is just a nurse who is more educated..... It was a nasty comment but then again some people are just nasty.

As a medical student I love the sense of community on this form which I did not find over at some other forums I shall not name but lets say its starts with an S and ends with a N. However the one thing I dislike about this forum is the stereotyping. If one doctor says a negative comment why is he/she given the title of spokesperson for the medical community? Another comment that grinds my gears is that NP provide more nurturing care. No some NP are more willing to listen and provide great care others also lack bedside manners. I hate this comment as it does a great disservice to the PCP I have seen for the last five years who has been extermely supportive of me as I face medical problems. Note I understand the OP is venting and I am not trying to take away from her vent. I am simply venting myself.

I want to add a little information. Maybe its just an accident but the set up of that question is identical to the questions in my Clinical Biochemistry Review book for USMLE. However I may be wrong and it was just an accident.

I have been part of plenty of study groups, most are a waste of time but some can be extermely productive. Here are some tips I have gathered through the years. 1- Study before hand! 2- Get everyone to write out topics that they have issues with 3- Go through the course syllabus and separate the topics. Get each person to create at least ten multiple choice question for their section. Emphasis that the question must be difficult. And each person must write at least one short answer/essay type question from the topics! They should provide a copy for each member of the group but they keep the answer key. 4- If for a course with a lot of key words. Get people to write definitions which must include source such as textbook page number, journal article, or website. A friend once created a crossword from the keyword definitions. 6- No more than four people!! Nice for sitting at a table and actually getting work done. Most Important: 5- Don't meet for a long time, that way if you find its a waste of time you can leave to study on your own!! One-Two hours for the first session at most. Goodluck!

It would be great if you could find a student or a single person who is willing to take care of the kids at night but make sure you go through the right channels and set up a lot of boundaries. I would hate for someone to take advantage of the situation.

Um, OP is right certain parts of Canada does use the term NA/CNA... a family member does one in a nursing home in Canada.

Note there is also the student version of Gray's which is much smaller and cheaper :). However the Moore's Essential Clinical Anatomy and the Netter's Anatomy I find to be personally better. Not sure of the usefulness for Nursing school though but if its just to peak your knowledge then definitely get Moore. However I bought a pack of Netters Flashcards as a gift for getting into nursing school (oh I have one for myself also). They are only 40 bucks.

Oh and it is a paid holiday!

Canadian here!! Its the day after christmas where all the stores have HUGE sales to change inventory. Its almost like Black Friday for the US. Great sales, but large crowds.

As a medical student I don't help... Please don't flame me. Let me explain. Its not because I'm lazy or don't care. But I'm scared I have no idea what to do. I don't want to hurt the patient and I feel like I would do more harm then good. However after reading this thread on my down time I will ask one of the nurses or CNA to teach me, I'm very willing to learn.....

From your question I'm assuming your Canadian from Ontario? Correct me if I'm wrong. If I'm notwrong, I believe that many of the Ontario colleges have joint system with the Universities. I know UofT, MacMaster and I believe Queens have joint systems for their nursing programs with the local colleges. You should talk to a career counselor or call up the local universities. I know the UofT system, since I did my undergrad there, I believe you need 2 years of Undergrad credit and then you can apply. The average is usually a B+ but in recent years it more like an A-, so a 3.7. Goodluck.

^ This post is not an attack but a heads up. As a another black poster I can echo that the term "colored" should not be used. Yes there are other blacks that use that word but it does not make it right. The term has a lot of history behind which causes many to cringe when they hear it. I bet if you referred to a patient as colored you would get some raised eyebrows and maybe a write up. So for your own stack use another term.

Speaking from personal experience they are necessary for certain people. My grandmother was a wanderer, meaning she would like to get up and leave against doctors orders. It was impossible for the family to be there 24hrs and its not the nurses job to watch her at all times as they had so many patients so my family hired a private sitter at night through an agency.

I think the nursing students should have a clinical section

I don't remember much as the pain had taken over but what I do remember is my nurse. She was overworked as she had many patients but she still came into my room and kept checking up on me. She held my hair when I was sick and reassured me many times as we waited for the doctor to come and order the pain medications. After receiving the medications she kept checking in. She called the pharmacy when test results seemed to be taking long and she went over everything with me. She knew me by first name without looking at a chart even though she had many patients. She calmed my nutty mother which is a prize in itself. But overall without her there my experience would have been worst. I have been reading allnurses for the past few months. I am a medical student and I came here one day after hearing a debate on studentdoctor. After reading through a few topics I realized how enjoyable this forum is and I love the sense of community and support this forum offers to its member.When I got sick this weekend I remebered all the discussions of the over worked nurse. However when I was discharged the nurse I spoke of above was busy and I was still sick (still am) so I was able to properly thank her as she went above and beyond. However from the discussions I know many of you go above and beyond...SO THANK-YOU. It does make a big difference.
