  1. On one of my trips to the ER one of my past co-workers was working the ER and was my nurse. She was also doing orientation with a new nurse that was fresh out of nursing school. He and I both did not let her know at the time that I was a nurse because she was already a little nervous. The attending MD gave an order for an IV so my friend came in with the new nurse and let her do the IV. She did great. After she got finished and everything was completed, we told her that I was a nurse and she almost fell out. She thanked us for not telling her. Everyone has to start somewhere. Now on some of my past trips to the ER and an order for lab ws given I will ask if the person actually knows what they are doing and if they act like they do not I will stop them and request a more experienced person to draw my labs and I will tell them why. I have had to many saying that they know and then I have all kinds of bruising and other issues because they did not know what they were doing.
  2. I was only kidding about the duct tape. Please come back to your room.
  3. Its summer again and it will start all over 1. for those with draining boils shower daily 2. clean linens changed everday towels sheets clothes ect put in a disolving laundry bag 3. dressing changes need to be at least BID for draining wounds. Clean with betadine and water if MD will order. ' 4. MD needs to order the nose ointment and I cant remember the name of it. 5. MD needs to order a culture 6. . MD needs to order antibiodics - (not telling MD what to do! LOL) Those were our standard orders for MRSA (boils)
  4. I kind of chuckled when I read the self defence course. Hun I have been doing this for 21 years now 20 of it in the trenches. I have worked just about every unit that we have in Arkansas and I would not work any place else! I no longer work in the trenches but took a position with the prison system as their HIV Coordinator. I have only had one inmate really want to jump me and that was the extent of it an officer had control of him and he was transferred. He later jumped on another inmate and was sent to max till he was released. I have no problems in here.
  5. I worked for CMS for 20 years and I just left to take a better job with the prison I was working in. Its only as good as the staff that are working there. We have some grat staff here and its no different that any others. I say alotof that too but yo0u are not going to make everybody happy no matter what you do.
  6. I have worked in infection control for 20 years now, but not in a hospital but in prison. It depends on what area of infection control that you want. I just started a new job with the states and I am now the Infection control/HIV Coordinator and so far I am loving it. You can visit sites such as CDC and your state health websites for information and some inservice training not to mention free CEU's and also check out medscape for info.
  7. Let me see where do I begin, 1. Nurse mets inmate she looses her job. He gets out, they get married. He cleans out her bank account, steals her car. She now has no job, no transportation and he has not been seen nor heard of since. 2. Medical record clerk - mets inmate starts a relationship - she is fired - he is locked up in max - he gets out they marry - he takes her for everything they have- beats the hell out of her - he's back in prison. 3. Mental health councler- mets inmate - has a relationship-she looses job - her husband leaves her- no more job - no more family- don't know where she is today. Starting a relationship with inmates do not pay in the long run. Due to the new PREA laws it is agains the law and it is a feloney charge to have sex with an inmate for any reason. Read the papers inmates have killed for less than that. Take everything you own and then some. Its not just medial staff but security staff also. It is not worth it. What are they going to do for you? NOTHING .... but get you into trouble and get you a freeworld charge! Not to mention soem of them even have "friends" that are in too! Why take a chance and catch more that just a moment of pleasure. You may get a death sentence! :nono::nono:
  8. homicidial nurse what unit di u wok at in Delaware? I was just there helping get ready for audits that were comming up in December? How did it come out?
  9. Thanks jamangel for the words of incouragement I am hoping that they come up on the pay some more I love doing what I do and I'm looking foward to this new stage of my nursing career. The head cheese has nothing but cofidence in me since he has known me my entire correctiojnal career, I feel that he will do his best to bring it up
  10. I put in for a job with the prison system its self : HIV coordinator and its a chance for a new experence in my nursing life. I hope that I am given the chance for it. It will be a real change from working the floor so to speak. Its a state job and it does not pay as much as I am making but I am needing a change. I will still be dealing with the same ones that I see and know but on a different level. :Melody: :caduceus: Come on let the good times roll!
  11. working in corrections is not for everyone, but I have learned so much and get to do things that I would not normally have gotten to do. I have been "in prison" little over 19 years and I love it.
  12. Dear, looks at our place makes no difference. Most of us are old and warn out! lol.
  13. it has its good days and its bad! Today was kinda quiet, but I really got tired of my name being called! (giggle) I advised all that I was changing my name and not going to tell them to what! My superviser just grinned. :uhoh21:
  14. always expect the unexpectable. [bANANA][/bANANA]Some have nothing else better to do than think up stuff! [bANANA][/bANANA]:monkeydance:
  15. I have had only 1 inmate in my 19 years attempt to jump on my and if it was not for the officer he might have made it. He was then transferred to another unit where he had a cast placed on his had and he later assulted a new inmate with it it was transfer to a max unit after that
