Passed boards! Have several job offers, which one to take????
Hey Tony Congratualtions on the VA job!! I just applied for one in my area and I was wondering? How long does the process take? From reading your posts it looks like it took 6 weeks for you? that's pretty quick--Anyway the job I am applying for says day shift and rotating to evening shifts. My question is what is considered evening shift at VA and how often do you rotate? Thanks

Should I take a non-nursing position?
Good luck MissBrittanyRN on your interview--Is it a hospital or LTC or SNF? Or better yet L&D?

Im miserable at my new job!!! HELP!
I find this position very interesting because ever since the culture has become less polite I find that people do not do the customary "Excuse me--Are you busy? Can I ask you a question?" Most people just start right in without any regard to if you are busy or not--so in that respect I can definitely agree that there are too many people out there that just start right in with the chitchat without checking 1st to see if you are busy. I always ask the person 1st--"Do you have a minute?"--on the reverse side--if I ask someone politely if they have a minute to spare for me and they give me that time but all the while they are acting like I am disturbing them--then they can pack sand--because if I go out of my way to be polite and ask for their time and they are not woman or man enough to say--"NO I am busy"--(which would be fine with me)--then I have no time for them at all and it will probably be a cold day in hell before I asked them anything. JMHO --- On second thought --I may just interrupt that person as often as I can just to PO them as much as I can--depends if I am looking for some entertainment that day or not. Some people are really so good for a laugh!!!

Infection Protection?
I do the same thing but now after I get changed and throw my clothes in the laundry I wipe down the door handles with Odo-Ban which kills viruses--then I am ready to interact with the family.

What do you think of chantix?
I don't know whether Chantix works because I never tried it. What worked for me was --(I was a serious heavy smoker)--I bought a book by Alan Carr called "The easy way to quit Smoking"--read the book and then I bought an herb called Lobelia--it mimics the effect of nicotine on the dopamine receptors of the brain. The Lobelia was mixed in with other herbs in a stop smoking aid that I bought from an herbal place online--they were in PA--if I find the bottle I will get the name for you or you can google --stop smoking herbal aid. I was a hard core smoker and these 2 things combined worked--the best thing was there were no side effects--the lobelia calms your brain naturally and the techniques in Carrs book teaches you how to be a non-smoker. Go natural and good luck--I know how hard it is.

Moving to France
Parisian french is very different than creole or canadian french but it will help to know the words I guess but the syntax is different, 600.00 will not get you very far in France not unless you are living in the countryside--but I don't think you will be. I think getting a job there while in school would be very hard but you could contact the French embassy at the nearest city to you and find out the particulars. If it were me I would get my degree here first then go over to work. A few months living over there and you will be very good with the language. Good Luck

2 Acceptance Lttrs...Now what? Private vs. Community college Help...
Community College--frankly I think they are better than the university--at least in my area they are highly regarded. Graduate debt free--get a job in hospital and let them pay for your BSN--it is a no-brainer.
-
Debt! Advice please
Do the ADN at a community college--it is much cheaper-- then get a job at a hospital that will pay for your BSN. Our hospital has an on campus class and in 2 years you have your BSN. The community college I went to for my ADN cost me 6000.00 for the 2 years--that included everything--even books. A good deal and it was really just as hard as university. Good Luck.

Im miserable at my new job!!! HELP!
I know this may sound weird but the few times that I have been in that situation (clique barrier) I either ignored it entirely or made a point to purposefully interject myself into situations so they would have to deal with me. That works only if you are up to the initial rejection--but hey--you're being rejected now. As I get older I pretty much don't care what someone thinks or says--as long as they don't interfer with me and my life. In the past, it would have almost destroyed me not to be included in a group but if it happened now I know I would just push back--and since I don't back down ever--I think they would be the ones warming up to me. But really if it is all that important to you that these people like you then---determine which person in the clique is most susceptible to being brought to your side (translation--the nicest person in the bunch) and every chance you get talk to her or him away from the group. At least you'll be able to show 1 person how nice you are and then usually (but not always) the group follows. Just keep in mind, anyone that relys on a group for their identity or well being is usually a weak person anyway. Safety in numbers I guess. And don't forget this experience--someday you may be in the position to welcome someone new into a work group--don't forget how it feels. Oh by the way--stick it out for at least a year for your resume and if you don't feel better by then--leave.

Words you never dreamed you would say as a nurse...
"Here, Mr. Jones. Put your member in the duck." OMG!! Do you know if you were in France and said that they would think you were talking literally--it is quite the fashion with the elites there (like Hollywood directors)--can anyone say Roman Polanski's favorite pasttime.

future nurse and taking care of my parents
Bless You for taking care of your Mom and good luck with nursing school. Just a tip to save money in school--For textbooks you need--go to school bookstore and get ISBN numbers from books and then buy them on hal.com or ebay--you will save alot of money. I always got my ISBN numbers a month before classes so I could take my time and find the best deals--sometimes I would buy the edition before the last one if I could be sure that it had the same info. I saved so much money.

future nurse and taking care of my parents
I planned ahead for my Mom coming to live with me when I built my house--I put a separate living but connected area on it for her. She has been with me since 1997--she did get very ill about 3 years ago which accelerated my decision to take an early retirement because it costs too much to have someone else come in--since I am already trained. Her health has gotten better so now I am looking to go to work again and since my sister just retired I am hoping she can pitch in. It is always easier if you have other family members pitching in. Do either of your parents have military time in? If they do and served during war time then when the time comes that they need home care you can apply for assistance with the cost. In the end I wouldn't have it any other way but just be prepared to have to give up some of your free time to take care of the them. It sometimes can be a 24 hour thing but very rewarding. You're a good daughter for helping your parents.

Over confident colleague
Yes--This girl has the right answer!!!! Grill him Danno!!! If he is making these stories up he will be short on details and you will be able to expose him for the liar he is--Believe me--HE will be the 1 running away from you--not the other way around. and if he does have all the answers--like the girl said--make him your friend--Now put your detective hat on and start grilling him!! Good Luck!!!

Administration lacks the reasoning ability of a 5 year old
First let me say I agree with everything that the OP stated---redundancy in documentation is ridiculous--but it will never get better unless we can do Tort Reform and cut down on the ridiculous amounts of frivilous lawsuits in the healthcare industry. Until that happens--(sorry it won't happen--lawyers have too many lobbyists in DC)--managers will continue to follow the CMA rule. While the above may seem like a rant, (it is), I actually have a suggestion to administrators: Treat my time like a budget. Not like a government budget, but like a real budget. If you add a new piece of documentation, figure out how much time that task will take. Do this by following a couple of nurses through the task in real life. If the new task takes three minutes, figure out a way to gain those three minutes back so it is not at the expense of patient care. This is an interesting idea--when I read it I immediately thought about the auto industry--where I worked for many years before I became a nurse. I recommend from my experiences there never to allow management to do a time-study on you--which is what it would become. Management will always find ways to maximize your output--meaning if they are watching you and they perceive you are not productive enough--they will find ways to add even more work on you. I saw it myself and I also saw the quality of the product drop drastically. I know that once the auto industry initiated the "Continuous Process" on the assembly line I never saw anyone get less work-- only more--and believe it or not I have read articles where Hospital administrations have studied continous process to see if they can use it in their industry--watch out for Team Concept--alot of backstabbing. Don't ever give up your autonomy. JMHO

For those of you "hot shots" who didn't think the nursing program was " that hard"...
I'm just curious--how could you be a "B" nurse with a GPA of 3.96--just curious and congratulations on your MSN.

State license lapsed after 18 years; how to get relicensed
Are you sure she has to take NCLEX again? I just took a refresher course with several people away from nursing for 20 years and all they did was the refresher course and clinicals.

Need some encouraging words as new grad in LTC
I took this from another link because she has the best advice for you to use. Hang in there!! TonydeMom says---- Re: Help? Need cheatt sheet while doing precepting in nursing home 1. Come to work early 2. Before you clock in get a resident census sheet 3. Do rounds. Look at every resident on the census sheet. Make sure they are stable. 4. Find out who is a full code who is a no code. Mark it down on the census sheet. If someone is not breathing you have no time to hunt down a chart and figure this out. 5. Know where the suction machine with tubing attached ready to go, ambu bag and CPR boards are located. An emergency is no time to be looking for these items. 6. Know what residents need to get their blood sugar tested and at what time. If the order reads 30 minutes before meals. Know what time the meal is served and mark this down. 7. Know what residents recieve enteral feedings. Always a good idea to have the tube feeding formula at the bedside so it can be adminstered if an alarm goes off indicating the bag is empty. 8. Know what time the residents tube feeding pumps will be turned on and off. 9. Know what residents recieve their medications before meals, and after meals. This will save you alot of time and should get your day off to a good start. After you clock in: 1. Get report on the residents. Do walking rounds. Do narcotic count. 2. Give report to the nursing assistants 3. Start your med pass. 4. Do treatments when the meal carts are put away 5. Do weekly progress notes 6. Do the daily charting Hope this helps.

why do nurse manager cheat on last paycheck when staff quit?
I think she owes you some money--if you worked it then she owes you--just call her everyday or go to the business office. Why did you quit?

For those of you "hot shots" who didn't think the nursing program was " that hard"...
I don't want to play Doctor but could you perhaps be Bi_polar--the reason I ask is because all of the symptoms you describe my husband had until he was diagnosed as bi-polar--they put him on lithium which worked great and he has been fine since--as long as he doesn't forget to take his lithium. Just a thought.

Family member complaint. Sorry, long post.
You know I am glad that Vito addressed this because I was wondering the same thing about telling the family from the get go that congregating in the room while I am trying to do my job is a big fat NO NO. I don't have any hospital experience yet but during clinicals I would see whole families stuffed into these tiny rooms that would be in the way of the nurses and I would think--Hey--How can anyone do their jobs with all these people. When I start working I'm doing the "huddle thing" with the family in the beginning--Thanks Vito--I have no problem speaking up--all those people present a safety issue to me--if I can't get to the patient how can I take care of them--Speak up Nurses--as long as you set ground rules in the beginning I think families will find it hard to walk all over you. JMHO
