What's your nursing kryptonite?
Ear Wax (Not Mine of Course) Watching a patient clean his/or her ears, literally gags me! VERY STRANGE!!! I can handle pretty much anything else that comes my way!

Our new hire, new grad charge nurse
"rn's dont hv to be iv certified. its inclusive in our education.lpn's are the only ones that need iv certification. plus rn's have the benefit of having hours and hours of clinical experience in the hospital where we start iv's all the time. please dont confuse the two, rns spend lots of hours in the hospital during school dealing with complex patients." that may be true for your rn program but not all lvn/lpn programs are below par. my 18 month lvn program is run exacly the same as our school's rn program. not only did i have over 900 hours of clinical experience (and not at a skilled nursing facility/nursing home & is way more then my state requires) all at acute care hospitals. the local state university bsn graduates have less clinical hours then my lvn program. lvn's also spend lots of hours in the hospital during school dealing with complex patients. we take care of the same patients are counterpart rn students do. so don't confuse all lvn/lpn schools & training!

What to expect for your Fundamentals & your first clinicals!
Thats funny that you say the toughie test is Fluid and Electrolyte's in Fundamentals...It is the same thing in our program, many students get dropped after that examination!

Things you would love to say to your fellow nursing students!
I am sure this has been said but I dont feel like reading 107 pages!!! When did you graduate high school? Because it sure seems to me like your acting like a high schooler!!!!

My very 1st clinical expierence ever!!! :-)
My first clinical experience was a HUGE eye opener for me. I guess you can say I grew up sheltered, my father was in law inforcment, so I didn't get to experience all that much the world had to offer, until I got married, and started to see the world...Anyway...HUGE county hospital that serviced over 5 counties with the busiest ER in the state and my first patient was on a ICU step-down unit, and he had a dx of Guillein-Barre (excuse my spelling if wrong) My instructor was like "What an interesting patient to have as your first" All I did when I got home was sleep for hours because not only was I physically drained I was hugely emotionally drained as well!!!

annoying lab instructor
Just because you think you may fail Dosage and Calculations doesn't mean you aren't fit to be a nurse! It just means you might need a math tutor, some remediation and take it again. If you want to be a nurse, don't let anyone or ANY SUBJECT stand in your way. I have always been horrible in math...HORRIBLE. Growing up I barely passed my math classes and when it came time for me to take Dosage and Calculations, I did horrible the first 4 tests and then all of a sudden it "clicked" and I buckled down, got 100% on my Final and managed to get a B in the class....all that worry and now look at me, in my last semester of nursing school!!!! You can do it! Just believe in yourself!! Sorry for rant, kind of off topic, just wanted to be encouraging, because I had no one encouraging me!!!

To own a pet or not while in nursing school...
As I am typing this right now, I am staring at my little baby girl Lola a French Bulldog, and could NEVER imagine how my life would be without her in it. I got her right when I lost my job and started my nursing education. She has gotten me through so much with her companionship and loyalty. She is family pet for my husband and I and when his son comes to visit. The only concern I have is there health. Just this past Saturday, my Lola had a seizure and she had one Sunday, so today my husband took her and had bloodwork done and should know the results by Wednesday. So I am just hoping that all goes well and she is ok, because I lack the time and excessive thousands to pay the vet bills. That would be my only main concern. Good Luck!!

Depressed nurse here, lexapro is not helping.
I myself am not ashamed to say that I have taken many anti-deppresants since the age of 15, thats when I started battling depression/anxiety, and the one that has worked best for me is Effexor XR...The only thing I hate is, if I miss even ONE dose, I feel it and its not a good feeling. Good luck in trying to find the right fit for you!:redbeathe

Scrubs Make Me Crazy (long rant)
Why does she have to go to the gym? She has large breasts!

Hesistant to do CNA work..
I got hired as a CNA in a hospital with no experience. It ended up being horrible. You never know, you may like LTC and hate the hospitals. The problem at the hospital I worked at was staffing. The liscensed staff never helped and other CNA's wouldnt help each other. Teamwork is key! Especially on preventing injuries!

Rancho Springs Medical Center
I would think they would be doing everything they could because they have some big competition opening up in the next year or so, Loma Linda University is opening up a new hopsital medical center off of Clinton Keith Road and they are already starting to hire administrative staff. The sad thing is both Inland and Rancho has both added on to their facility in the past 5 years. Rancho has a beautiful womens center that has been built for over two years and yet to open...disapointing:idea:

Rancho Springs Medical Center
I actually know someone very close to myself, that worked for Southwest Healthcare, the company that owns Rancho Springs Medical Center & Inland Valley Medical Center, for almost twenty years. I am not sure if you are currently in the southern California region, but Rancho Springs and Inland Valley have been in the media quiet a bit very recently, and in a very unfavorable light. They are at a very close risk or already lost their liscensing from the state:uhoh3: If you check out kcal9.com or abc7la.com or abc7.com (I can not remember the exact one) and you can read the entire story, including all the juicy details! On a side note, I grew up in Murrieta, just recently moved 50 miles north. I lived there from age 5 to 23 and I believe it is an excellent place to live and an even better place to raise a suburban family. (Not sure if you live there or not)

South Cali RN waiting lists
I go to Chaffey College in Rancho Cucamonga, great school, excellent reputation, I love everything but there is a waitlist, I think you will find a waitlist wherever you are in the southern California region. Chaffey College also has a LVN-RN transition program, and a great (pretty tough from what I hear) LVN program. Mt. San Jacinto College, is actually where I did my pre-req's before I moved to Rancho Cucamonga. I also would recommend that school.

Can I afford West Coast university??
With a student loan size of 132k, you won't be paying for a couple of years. I am not that much older than you (25) but I feel maybe you should meet some mid-twenty, RN's and let them "Big Sister" (sounds cheesy) you and mentor you, so you can really see and determine that being a nurse is really for you. Say you go to WCU, and do decide that nursing isnt for you (and there would be no shame in that, its not for everyone) you would still be stuck with that debt. I go to highly regarded cc in socal, and couldnt be prouder to say I am a graduate of my college, and I plan on my bsn someday. Just think things VERY SLOWLY! If I was 18 and 132k in debt, I would make myself sick (10k of credit card debt, makes me sick in uncertain economic times.:redbeathe

Failed my first attempt at Foley competency :(
The sterile field always got me too!!! The saying "practice makes perfect" rings true to nursing skills. Like the other poster, having a friend watch you is a great way to fix your mistakes. Also, at my school we have a skills lab with a special instructor that helps us with anything we need help with. If you have anything like that, I would definetly utilize it...Dont beat yourself up, you will get it!!
